While the core message of the news is pretty much contained within the headline above, the fact is that we're so gosh-darned excited that Street Fighter is finally getting the video treatment on the PSP. After the dust settles, 29 episodes of the Street Fighter II V animated series will be on store shelves, although that may not be for a few more months since they're only planning on releasing Volume 1-5 for the first batch. Capcom is also readying Street Fighter Alpha: The Movie for release during the second quarter as well. These UMDs will sell for $19.99 when they hit retail.
Street Fighter II V on UMD in Q2 OMG LOL!

Neon Genesis Evangelion tries the UMD
So it turns out that the idea of UMDs aren't any more popular in Japan than it is here in the States. When are they going to learn that poor ideas sell poorly? In any case, that won't stop them from trying. In a couple of months, Neon Genesis Evangelion 2: Tsukurareta Sekai will be released over there. But not by itself. Neon Genesis Evangelion: DECADE, a 10 year anniversary memorial box, will be tagging along for the ride. This little bundle includes the videogame plus two UMD disks featuring the movies Death & Rebirth and The End of Evangelion. Import aficionados should look for Shinseiki Evangelion: DECADE -- 10 Shuunen Kinen Memorial Box to ship this Stateside.
Sluggish UMD sales cause Sony to cut back
We've heard the argument before. For whatever reason you may have, there seems to be a widespread reluctance to purchase the UMD movies that Sony bragged about in the beginning. Because of this, they're going to cut back on the production of the movie format. While comedies seem to be the best-sellers, average sales fall at about 50,000 copies. The Variety story points to pirates as one reason why this may be the case. But who really wants to purchase an extra copy of a movie they may already own just to watch it on the PSP? Wouldn't it be better if TV DVD players could somehow support the UMD format? Of course a price drop couldn't hurt either.

First independent UMD label
Silver Platter is boasting itself as the first indie label for UMDs on the market. They specifically hunt for content that is best suited for the UMD format and then distribute and market them worldwide. Such full-length features they provide are The DC Video, Teddybear Crisis, and The Community Project. Their catalog is currently being set up, but they will be giving away free gifts in honor of its completion. If you want to subscribe to the announcement list, you may get lucky.Could this be a turn for better priced movies on the PSP?
[Thanks, sean barrett]

PSP gets new downloadable movie service
The PSP is certainly no stranger to playing movies. Movies on UMD are being released at a furious pace. The "homebrew" scene is ripe with options for getting content onto your all-in-one media wonder. But there haven't been a ton of options for downloading affordable, legal movies. That's starting to change with the debut of the 29MP4 Video Store.
As you might expect the service works a bit like iTunes, but without the same level of polish or the same amount of content. Currently in beta, the store offers an initial selection of movies that cost $2.99 per download.
Don't expect to be downloading the latest hollywood releases though. Most of the beta launch line up consists of B-grade, direct-to-video shlock such as National Lampoon's Blackball (and that's the cream of the crop!).
The site promises many, many more movies as 2006 gets into gear. Let us know if you take the plunge and try the new service.
Deep Discount UMD sale
Thank goodness for sweet deals, as the cheap gamer inside all of us would probably have a lot less to spend our money on otherwise. Here's a heads-up from one penny-pinching gamer to another. Deep Discount DVD is having a UMD sale: buy one get another free!
A lot of these are under $15 too. And don't forget the free shipping while you're at it. Better hurry though, the offer expires January 8th.
PSP game releases for the week of December 19
If the PSP is a bit lacking in the game release department, it sure makes up for it with UMD movies (if this week is any comparison). The lull before Festivus has granted us a sole new PSP game:
- Peter Jackson's King Kong: The Official Game of the Movie
Badonka-donks show up on UMD; Hell gets a bit nippy
We all saw the signs. Playboy had their PlayboyStation Portable going on, and you know you'd be lying if you said you didn't use Bittorrent to explore your more carnal interests. Now, instead of having to wait several days to download your "educational" materials, you can simply buy them from your smut peddler of choice. Bouncy bills itself as the first ever Mature-rated UMD out on the market and it went on sale online last week.Pr0n on UMD? Yeah, sure it was inevitable, given the more mature demographic the PSP targeted, we just didn't realize finding out about it would make us feel so
Predictably, the link is considered NSFW, but it's also intended for our, er, more mature readers. Everyone else should just skeedaddle. Don't make us go all Republican on you young'uns!
