Mastiff floods retail chain with budget copies of Gurumin

Remember the Deal of the Day we had over a week ago? We reported that the cutesy beat-em-up RPG Gurumin was available for $20. Well, it looks like that's no longer a Gamestop-specific deal: the game has officially become a budget title.

Mastiff is flooding the retail chain, alleviating previous "supply issues" the title was facing. The publisher is hoping that by lowering the price, and increasing the title's availability during Sony's aggressive PSP marketing, it will be able to gain an even larger audience for the niche title. "Between the increased availability and the economical price, RPG fans should now have no trouble getting their hands on Gurumin," said Bill Swartz, "Head Woof" (we're not kidding) of Mastiff.

PSP Fanboy previously reviewed the title, awarding it with a 7.5.

A cure for the lack of Gurumin

Are you having trouble finding Mastiff's latest? Destructoid is reporting that the Guruminly challenged finally have a new way of finding the game. Simply e-mail the game's publisher, Mastiff Games, at: . Like a financially invested Sherlock Holmes, they'll track down a copy of the game for you to buy. It comes as no surprise that Gurumin is difficult to find: with such a cute style, the game can only target a specific niche. If you're interested in picking up the game, don't forget to read our review first. If you're still willing to pick up this "by-the-numbers" RPG, check they seem to have plenty of units in stock.

Top 5 on PSP: RPG

Some gamers (and worse yet, gaming press) think the PSP is just a port machine. With that in mind, every day this week we'll feature a new genre and list the top 5 games (according to metareviews), most of which aren't ports, so no matter what you're into, you'll have some idea of what games you should own. Today the focus is on RPGs, which most seem to have gotten bad reviews, but my fiancee can't get enough of the RPGs on PSP, so what do they know?

Top 5 RPGs on PSP

  1. X-Men Legends II: Rise of Apocalypse
  2. Tales of Eternia
  3. Marvel: Ultimate Alliance
  4. Gurumin: A Monstrous Adventure
  5. Dungeon Siege: Throne of Agony

I can't say I've played many RPGs on PSP myself, but like my fiancee, do you have some you've enjoyed on PSP? She hasn't played most of these since she loves the Japanese offerings. What do you think about these 5 games? What RPGs aren't on this list that you think every PSP owner should have?

PSP Fanboy review: Gurumin

Gurumin is a game you want to love: it features a fantastic sense of style, a great musical score, and a cute, charming presentation. And while it's enjoyable to play, the game never gets too exciting. There's nothing fundamentally wrong about Gurumin, but there's nothing truly exceptional about it either. Gamers won't go wrong with picking up Gurumin, as long as they expect a fairly by-the-numbers action RPG that unfortunately plays it too safe.

It's Saturday night and my PSP needs to look sexy for its night out on the town. Looks like this calls for the Saturday PSP background explosion. We're back this week with a background for an ARPG, a music game and an anime. Want to know what the backgrounds are?

Get a free Gurumin guide

For a limited time, gamers that rush over to the Gurumin official website will get a free 32-page mini-guide, filled with full-color art, tips, and a walkthrough of the game's first chapter. Five lucky gamers will get their guides autographed by the voice cast, which includes the likes of Tara Strong.

Those of you browsing via your PSP will be interested to check out the Downloads page to get your hands on MP3s from the game's lively soundtrack. The cute, anime-inspired, Falcom-developed RPG is heading to the US on February 12th.

Gurumin footage looks sloppy recently posted two new videos of the upcoming Gurumin, the super-happy-time Japanese action RPG from Falcom. As much as I want to get excited for this game, the sloppy visuals and potentially uninspired gameplay cast a huge shadow of doubt over the game. Check it out, and form your own opinion, after the break.

Gurumin to feature Japanese VA, and more details revealed

"We looked up "no-brainer" in the dictionary and there was a picture of Gurumin," said Mastiff in an interview with Siliconera. The publisher reveals a few interesting tidbits, like having the original Japanese voice acting available as a secret easter egg. Way cool---just in case the English VA doesn't work out so well. Mastiff also points out features that are available in the PSP version of the game that can't be found on the original PC version of the game:

"Gurumin on the PSP not only features tons of extra content that wasn't available on the PC, like new costumes and a boss rush mode, but the controls have been polished for the PSP version, and the game delivers an action-RPG experience that simply can't be had anywhere else on the platform."

Check out the rest of Siliconera's interview with Mastiff, and voice actor, Amber Hood.

Gurumin to feature accomplished VAs

Tara Strong, voice of Final Fantasy X's Rikku, joins a surprisingly strong voice acting cast for the upcoming PSP RPG Gurumin. Other VAs include Amber Hood (Psychonauts), Dee Bradley (Viewtiful Joe), Kim Mai Guest (Metal Gear Solid), Robin Atkin Downes (Prince of Persia), and more. The voice acting will be directed by Kris Zimmerman, the voice director of all the Metal Gear Solid games (all of which feature excellent voice acting).

It's great to see a PSP RPG finally get some solid voice acting. We've had way too many quests with minimal voice acting-- hopefully, publisher Mastiff sets a standard for all PSP RPGs to come. We'll have more on the ultra-cute Gurumin in the future.

Gurumin offers big-eyed RPG fun for only $10

Gurumin is a super-happy-time-fun Japanese RPG that's coming over to the States this February. It comes from Falcom, developers of Ys (which was eventually ported to the PSP, with absolutely terrifying load times). As seen in the video above, the game appears to have some pretty solid, if not terrifying, big-eyed chibi gameplay. If waiting for 2007 doesn't suit you, then you might be interested to know that Gurumin is $10 at Play-Asia for this week only. Not only will this save you a great deal of time, and money, but it'll force you to improve your Japanese skills. And isn't that far more valuable than simply getting a good deal on a game?

Another video, after the cut.
