The people of Games Radar speak about Tokyo Game Show in their latest podcast. They speak a little bit about PSP, and talk about the impressive Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops and Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core, and lament about how the PSP might've been more successful if such beautiful, fully developed games were released, or announced, earlier in the PSP's life cycle. They seem to have come to a conclusion that Japanese developers believe that the PSP isn't in the process of failing... it's already failed. They quote a Clover Studios producer (guys behind the awesome Viewtiful Joe and Okami) as saying "Sony's lost this generation. I'll be real interested to see what they'll do with PSP2. I think that's where they have a chance to come off a failure and really succeed."

It seems like everyone in the media is so used to the concept of winners and losers in the handheld business that they can't realize when a system is doing well despite being in 2nd place...the PSP is probably the highest-selling non-Nintendo handheld system ever, and people are still bitching about that?

I think this story is more important than some of you are writing it off as. Sure, the media can bash the PSP, but when DEVELOPERS start ignoring a system: that's a bad thing. Me, I'm def. going to get the new FFXII and It's a Wonderful World game on the DS, but it's somewhat disappointing that the PSP isn't being considered for such great, original games.

I love my PSP to death, and also have no interest in DS, or even over-priced new consoles for that matter.

It's said that developers think the PSP has failed but it's more like the developers have failed. If they can develop a game for the DS which has no analog sticks and make the game work there is no reason they can't make these games work on the PSP. If Namco can make Tekken on the PSP then it's obvious that those who cannot program would love to say the PSP failed and those that can will continue to make solid tripple A PSP titles.

You've got to look at it from a business perspective. I love my PSP; it's a sexy machine, and there are a few really good games for it. But the DS beats the hell out of it in sales, both for systems and games. Guys like you and me love the PSP, but I loved my GameGear and my Dreamcast too, and those both "failed" from a business perspective.
My thoughts? Sony's management failed to really anticipate what a run Nintendo would give them, in spite of the HUGE experience Nintendo has had in the portable space. That's why it feels like they didn't really try hard on the games to give us some really unique stuff, the sort of stuff that makes the DS so compelling to so many people. My favorite games on the PSP? Hot Shots Golf, Lego Star Wars, and occasionally GTA. Every single one is a port. Whether you blame the developers or Sony for this is up in the air, but that lack of content has been the fatal flaw for the PSP.
My two cents, anyway.

Just wait till xmas, and see how Sony reduces the price of the PSP. Just add some GPS and MGS to the equation... and what we have????
Don't you remember PS2?? It costed a lot of money... but it's after a couple of years that it became a success!!!!

The point is that if the PSP's sales (and game sales) don't turn around with this next run of games (Vice City Stories, Portable OPs, Killzone: Liberation and Crisis Core - and whatever else is hitting during the holidays) more developers will drop the system citing development costs. The return on investment is just too low to justify continued development.

If it had two analogue sticks from the start, it would have won hands down. Most of the earlier games were ports of PS2 games that required 2 sticks. That early failure is what made me dislike the PSP at launch (though I now have one with a lot of homebrew on it) and made me put off buying it. If the next PSP2 has two analogue sticks, it will beat anything Nintendo could throw at it.

Now what's funny here (assuming I read the article correctly) is that the quote comes from Clover Studio, who have made a total of ONE game for the PSP; and that one game was a port of a gamecube game from last year.
Take a look at the entry for Clover Studio on Wikipedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clover_Studio#Games_developed_by_Clover_Studio
They've made six viewtiful Joe games, the first of which was a port to the PS2 of a gamecube game originally made by another studio. Since then there hasn't been a VJ game for Sony that wasn't a simultaneous release with Nintendo hardware, or a port.
Now, they did make Okami and God Hand for PS2 (neither of which I've played) but that's only this year when, by chance, GameCube dev has probably stopped for almost everyone but Nintendo.
What I'm getting at is that when a studio that's pretty much ignored Sony hardware except in the last year or so says they think the psp is dead I take it with a grain of salt.
Now, if a company that actually MADE a few games for PSP like EA, or Rockstar or Capcom (Capcom's a major funders of Clover) were to say they thought the psp was basically done . . . . then I'd be wondering if I shouldn't trade the psp and get a video iPod or something. Until then, color me unimpressed.

Oh silly Sean. Just because Viewtiful Joe isn't listed by Clover Studios doesn't mean it wasn't made by the same team. Clover Studios later spun itself off after making VJ on Gamecube. To think they are anti-Sony is silly.
Important to think about: it's not a good thing if any developer (regardless of whether or not they've made games for the platform) doesn't think developing on the platform is worthwhile.

Not to offend anybody. Considering the history of Nintendos and Playstation joypads, do any of you think that the PSP2 will have a touch pad, if they are ever going to release one?
Also Kimberly, who are you calling nerd? If you're not one yourself, why are you posting comments on a fanboy site?

...fine, point taken: When developers harbour such attitude, that can mean trouble for the console. However, is it not true that we--the gamers--have actually had a treat of solid PSP titles this year? Is it also not true that the treat so far as such been an exotic dish of appetizers, while the real meaty goods are still int he oven? Sure, some of these goliaths may have come out late, but so what? There here now, and they will get noticed, and that will in turn, have the developers thinking differently as well. I think we live in this reality where we believe that opinions from professionals are the final word, when even those professionals deem such axioms as opinions. And the beauty about opinions is that they can change.
I was of very harsh opinion about the PSP when I found out that it came with one analogue, which was placed right under the only d-pad, of all places. However, my opinions have taken a drastic 180-degree turn, ever since.
Steve's made a star point.
So these developers feel that the PSP's already failed. What happens if these new chain of games do well for the sales? Can the same developers not have a change of opinion and heart if some of these new titles were to cause revolutionary rifts on the sales chart? I can understand the worry over such news, and I also realise that it isn't something to dismissively mock. However, I think, once one gets the connotation, one should also relax and be open to the possibility that the same opinions could change. I am actually hoping to see more from this console, and I am getting bloody tired of complete pessimists, viewing this stage as the PSP final days in its life cycle. Of course, I also feel relatively agitated by those that completely dismiss such warning-signs, out of sheer spite and denial. However, I think you guys get the point... PSP is doing okay! I don't think it's down for the count just yet; we'll find out what these developers have to say, after this wind of new games.
"If they can develop a game for the DS which has no analog sticks and make the game work there is no reason they can't make these games work on the PSP." - bxbaily.
Point, but the DS does have a touch-screen, which can be used simultaneously with the d-pad. Y'know, it's not that hard, actually. But, development is much more than that, and I think some of us are taking the opinions too lightly, while others are treating the opinions as some holy doctrine. How about we view them as just opinions, from professionals, but opinions no less.
"Ea DID bash the psp (i hate to say that...)" - ldd.
Well, yeah, they did, I guess. Some would view that as professionally covert bashing, or something along those lines.
