Activision joins the return to retro

A slightly old news story about games that are very old. If you aren't sick of retro games yet, then Activision would like for you to read up on their offering of repackaged classics. Activision Hits Remixed will feature more than 40 games from the Atari 2600 era, such as Pitfall, Kaboom!, Chopper Command, Stampede, and Keystone Kapers. Thankfully, games that feature multiplayer will utilize the Game Share feature of the PSP, so that you and a friend can duke it out with a single UMD.

The disc will also feature "modernized front-end graphics" (as fancy as the PS3's front-end?) and unlockables. I would get excited, but I'm too busy not caring.

1. Cool.

Cue DS fanboy response:

"How lamez, PoSP is relegated to ports of 20 year old games cuz it lacks any good original games! Lollzz00z."

2. I wonder if this sudden surge of Retro games is saying something.

Read between the lines and be open minded for a moment....

Is it possible that a big retro gaming online system might appear on PSP? or even PS3.... copying the Virtual console maybe... so developers are trying to get their compliation packs out ASAP on UMD first to make a quick buck. It might not JUST be PS1 games.........

Or, is it simply a way of providing an obvious alternative to "Homebrew". Come on guys, admit it... most of you ONLY do it for emulation........

Jsut some thoughts. it seems odd that they are all appearing at once.

Its cool enough, I like some of the packs coming, especially the Genesis one!

Personally this one should be more than 40 2600 games. Hows about other formats such as Coleco and intellivision. And at least 100 games if they are this basic. That UMD has 1.8 GB to spare ;) MAybe Activision didnt release any more than 40.

Prices for these retro discs should be low I hope.

3. Retro gaming hmmm.....

E.T., video game cartridge. A game barely playable. Gentlemen, we can rebuild him. We have the technology. We have the capability to improve the world's first unfinishable game. E.T. will be that game. Better than it was before. Better, stronger, faster.

Hurry up and keep digging. There must be at least one cartridge left in that landfill.

4. The "sudden surge of retro gaming" is probably because those of use who were kids during the Atari 2600 (and E.T.) years are now in our 30's, and are prime targets for marketing them to. We're at the right age for the combination of having money, and reminiscing of our childhood.

I'm looking forward to see this one coming out. Pitfall! Whee!

I mean more specifically the announcements of this along with Sega and EA collections within mere days! not just general retro releases over the past year or so, its just weird that there has been a surge in the last week! Conspiracy! Paranoia probably ;)

I'm 30, and yeah, I get sucked into these retro compilations. But if its a good set, and its not full price, I don't mind a little go. Its funny though, I always seem to come away a little disappointed. Were them ACE games (then) really that cack (now)? Its funny how we look at old games through rose tinted glasses. A rare few stand out now.

Its a bit like looking at a curly wurly (Brits only here)... Are they shrinking over time, or what? As we get older do things just look different? Ah the joys of "getting on a bit" :)
