PSP Fanboy review: PQ2

PQ2, or Practical Intelligence Quotient 2, provides everything a PSP gamer could possibly want from a puzzle game on the handheld. It features simple, but attractive graphics, some killer music, and an impressive array of networking features. With a sleek presentation, brisk load times, and a easy-to-understand concept, PQ2 comes easily recommended. However, the difficulty of these puzzles borders on the maniacal, and gamers may find themselves overwhelmed, even frustrated, by many of the seemingly-impossible tasks the game asks.

Like other great puzzle games, the basic mechanic of PQ2 is easily to understand. You must navigate your avatar to the exit. Obviously, this is easier said than done. You can navigate the low-key environments by moving and using various blocks found in the level. At first glance, this may seem a bit too easy: the first puzzles simply have players merely moving and shoving a few boxes around.

However, things get much more difficult, very quickly.

PSP Fanboy hands-on: PQ2

If you listened to our last fancast, you would've heard our ramblings on a little-known title called PQ2. The premise is ridiculously simple: get to the exit. However, to get to the end, you'll have to test your brain by navigating environments, moving boxes around in clever ways.

Certainly, a box-shoving puzzle game can't be too interesting. Incorrect. Our preview build of PQ2 features some incredibly slick presentation, with fantastic music and some really sleek menus. We really appreciated the tutorial system which breaks down each aspect of the game quite thoroughly. It may seem daunting at first, but the game tells you only what you need to know. For example, after passing a dozen practice challenges, the game tells me that I can easily pass the first ten levels of the game. The first ten puzzles focus only on the skills developed by the tutorial so far -- afterwards, we're allowed to go back into the tutorial to explore more complicated procedures.

The puzzles themselves progress very well in difficulty. As we continued through the game, we found the title to become increasingly challenging, with one or two puzzles giving us a real hard time. So far, we're very impressed by the quick load times, impressive presentation, and fun puzzles. We'll explore more of the game, such as the exciting level editor and infrastructure options, in our final review of the game. Until then, check out screenshots from the game in our updated gallery. Finally, don't forget to try out the Japanese demo to get a small taste of the title.

PQ2 downloadable demo

The Japanese demo invasion continues with PQ2, a puzzle game where you must guide your hapless character to the exit. Sounds easy? Wrong. Pick up boxes, and watch out for traps -- this will certainly test your brain.

1. Download the demo zip file.
2. Extract the contents of the zip file.
3. Connect your PSP to your computer using a USB cable.
4. Go to the PSP/GAME folder.
5. Copy ULJ00087 folder into the GAME directory.

SGD '07: Practical Intelligence Quotient 2

D3 Publisher is sending PSP owners more puzzle fun this summer. One part Cube, another part Hot Brain -- this puzzler attempts to find the "Practical Intelligence Quotient" of its players. The game keeps track of the moves and speed of the player and uses Infrastructure mode to compare the intelligence of the player to others around the country, and the world. (It's developed by Professor Masuo Koyasu of Kyoto University ... so it has to be good!)

PQ2 will offer more than 250 puzzles for players to solve. And, if that weren't enough, a level editor will allow users to create their own puzzles for sharing through Infrastructure. Finally, the game wants to share the love: the game supports Game Sharing so that friends can experience ten levels of brain-squeezing fun.

Check out our screenshots below. The game releases June 12th.
