PSP fan
boygirl Barbara
sent in a tip that made me absolutely furious. She discovered an article entitled
R.I.P. PSP from the Gameworld Network. It makes the bold assumption that the PSP is on its "last leg" and that now is the time "to lay the PSP to rest." The reasons for its imminent death?
- High development costs - it costs ten times as much to make a PSP game as opposed to a GBA game.
- Lack of hit games - Only three games have become million sellers: GTA, Ridge Racer and Hot Shots Golf.
- Competition from the DS Lite, Wii & PS3 - DS Lite is a huge hit, but the costs of buying a next-gen system will deter people from buying a PSP.
- Long load times and shorter battery life.
- The death of UMD movies.
It's strange, right after people are leaving comments about PSP Fanboy's new
optimistic revival, I put this story up. The arguments are good, especially in light of DS Lite's
incredible success. However, the article's conclusion is a bit (how do I find the appropriate words?)
dumb: "
Bottom line: Trade in the PSP while you can still get a decent deal!" My recommendation? Wait until PS1 downloads, Tekken, Ghosts 'n Goblins, Loco Roco, Ace Combat, Every Extend Extra, Vice City Stories, Lumines II, Killzone, Gangs of London, Sonic, Gitaroo Man, Ratchet, and Crisis Core come out. Oh wait, was that too many exclusive games for you?

How much was this guy paid to write this piece of crap?
This could be a good article a few months ago, now there are some pretty sweet games scheduled, and it may not be a "rise from the ashes" for the PSP, but it's a pretty dumb thing to write an article like this when there's so much expectation rising for oncoming releases.

Now u know how Nintendo fans feel.
Im gonna say the same thing Ive been saying about the Gamecube. The PSP may not be the leader and prolly will never be, but its far from dead. And thats coming from someone that has not nor intends to get one.

If there is integration to the PSP with the PS3 then it might encourage sales, not deter them. Plus high development costs don't make much of a difference when most of the gaming companies have money out their butt, plus most games aren't exclusive anymore, so that kinda brings costs down. Another thing is that many articles are making it sound like you can't have both a PSP, and a DS. I've had a PSP for some time, and when the DS came out I couldn't hold out anymore, so am I in the minority with having both?....

I agree with the author that there are allot of great titles out for the PSP.
SOCOM
Grand Theft Auto:LCS
Daxter
Syphon Filter:Dark Miror
Burnout Revenge
Lumnies
Tiger Woods Golf 06
There are some great accessories coming out too.
I think allot of PSP owners are people who want portable media. Games, movies, audio in one package that is very portable. Now I will be the first to say that as an MP3 player the PSP sucks. The controls, menus, and user interface are horrible. If you want to do a firmware update that people will want to install, fix the audio player controls and menu system. Make it possible to play playlists. As a video player it is really nice and with some support now from TIVO, and being able to rip movies down to the larger memory sticks it is very nice.
I am a little bit upset that it has taken over a year and half to get together a library of good games to play, and some fun accessories. And this is now making me weary to purchase any Sony product at launch. I think if Sony would have pushed half as hard for the games as they did for those worthless UMD movies I think the PSP would be walking all over the Nintendo DS.

i bought a psp at release. then i realised that there was a very small selection of good games. i put the psp in the corner of my room and didnt touch it until about a month ago, when i bought megaman x maverick hunters. now i bring my psp with me everywhere (though i beat megaman a while back). i have just recently bought a bunch of newer games that are extremely fun, and i have also discovered flash games on the browser (if you cache them, you can play them offline, and they basically becomes minigames that you can play whenever.) thus, i believe that the psp is only getting stronger and stronger from here on out. also, it has so much potential with the browser (if someone was to dedicate a website to flash games for the psp, all of us psp owners would have a library of free games to choose from whenever we want.) - that would be awesome.

I agree that UMD may have diluted Sony's focus from a marketing perspective, but developmentally SCEI is a separate entity. It's unlikely UMD development in any way actually took manpower or money away from PSP game dev by Sony.
The article is a total crock of shit, which doesn't surprise me, nor does the fact I'd never even heard of that website (note all the glowing Wii coverage). The opening statement 'The PSP costs developers 10 times more to make a game than the GBA' is just pure stupidity on multiple levels. Likewise the fallacious comments about 'poor E3 performances' (it was a huge hit in 2004), 'lack of hit games' (it has more, higher rated games than the DS on just about any major website you check), Microsoft's portable (no evidence exists as to what it will be or when)... And then the comparisons to the Sega-aborted Dreamcast and even the DOA Virtual Boy are just insane. Comparing it to the N64 might be more like it, since that platform really didn't fail, per se - it just didn't lead the market overall.
I'll agree that the PSP lacks the high dollar revenue titles the DS has garnered, but then Nintendo always was effective at rehashing its tried and true character franchises. I'll also agree the price point is still a problem, despite this dork's claim that a base PSP is still $250 and that a PSP + 2 games = $330. The anti-bias starts showing with bullshit 'facts' like these. For starters, the PSP now retails for $199 for the basic pack and many games are $29.99 or even $19.99, so a PSP can in fact be had with two games for $240 and change for tax.
It's twisting of facts like this guy has done that throws any 'conclusion' he makes out the window, and it doesn't take a PSP Fanboy to see that.

The psp is far from dead, in fact the psp has a better future game lineup than the ds does and I think the psp will eventually win the handheld market, but I'm not guaranteeing it.

Just like the Sega GameGear eh? You should probably get your crystal ball in for a checkup.

yeah the PSP might have had a tough time when it first came out but it's in a good position now! This article just focused on all the negative things and dismissed most of the new positive stuff that the PSP will have soon!

The Nintendites claiming GameGear (and other failed systems) similarities are ignoring the fact that the PSP outsold the DS for several months earlier on in Japan, has done it more often than not in the USA since launch and has, overall, fared far better than any other handheld system has against Nintendo.
Of course, any non-Nintendo company is going to get the rag from the Nintyfreaks. If Microsoft busts with theirs, you can expect plenty of sarcasm and criticism ala the low sales of the XBOX 1 and 360 sales in Japan.

PS3 needs good press said...
Will the PSP die? No. Although the game sales aren't impressive and UMD movies are dying out, the platform is still attractive as a watered down mobile PS2 unit. In a way, it's good and bad. Good because hey, you can play PS2-like games on the go. Bad because ... the PS2 is cheaper, has a massive game library, and if the game does well on the PSP, there's no reason for Sony not to port it to the PS2, as well (GTA: Liberty City Stories).
The PSP and DS are neck and neck in worldwide sales, I believe, with the DS pulling ahead due to the recent launch of the Lite edition. No other handheld competitor has come close to that. There is room for the PSP on the handheld market. It is a very attractive device. I still think it needs another price drop, 175 base unit would be ideal. And they need to figure out a cheaper path of development cause it isn't attractive to the gaming companies that you could pay the same amount to develop for the PS2 (over 100 million installed user base vs < 20 mil for the PSP).

I think the article is pretty objective, it just has a pretty outlandish title. If you read through the whole thing the guy says at the end the psp does have a lot going for it in the future.
But I wonder if like he says the wii and ps3 will take away sells?

Well, I bought a PSP a year ago. Still think it is a very good machine, but got bored of the games and for portable music/video a memory stick and the PSP interface just don't do it for me, I stick with my iPod 60GB.
I bought a Nintendo DS Lite last month, to be honest just for the game Brain Age. And I think I have to agree with the PSP critics. Of course in specs the PSP outperforms the DS on each and every single aspect. But the DS touchscreen totally makes up for it in combination with games like BrainAge.
I own the DS Lite for a month now and played it each and every single day since, just because Brain Age and Brain Academy are so addictive. Even more spectecular: my girlfriend, who never played games in her live or would ever have considered buying a console or handheld, is totally hooked to both games as well, which made me even consider buying a second DS Lite to avoid endless discussions whos turn it is to play ;-)
Bottom line: It appears having killer games and an excellent/innovative control system is much more important than specs alone. Nintendo managed to have some games in the lineup that convinced many non-players who never touched a console before to start playing.
The fact that the Nintendo DS Lite and the game Brain Age is actually completely sold out at most stores in the Netherlands now illustrates this.
With this experience, maybe the Wii will indeed be a succes, although on specs it will be totally shadowed by XBOX360 and PS3.
