In what will surely rile up the Sony fanbase, Reggie Fils-Aime has taken the usual video game hardware rivalry to a whole new level when he hit Sony with a low blow in a recent interview with USA Today.
When asked whether Nintendo is interested in attracting new customers instead of trying to compete against Sony and Microsoft, the Nintendo of America president and chief operating officer replied: "The interesting thing is if you do expand the market, you do both. You grow the category, but you'll also dramatically increase your market share. As an example, Nintendo DS in Japan outsells all of our competitors by a factor of five to one. We are so far in advance of our handheld competitors that they're not even on the map."
Wow, not even on the map, eh? Could he possibly be talking about the N-Gage or Gizmodo? Yeah, probably not. While the portable hardware and software sales have been squarely in Nintendo's favor, it will be interesting to see if Sony's next wave of games and upcoming PS1/PSP emulation can take a bite out of Nintendo's momentum.

Yeah that is funny. Before Lite the DS was starting to trail behind. That was only a few months back. How people exaggerate. 17 mil and 21 mil worldwide isnt that much different. Japan has boosted lite the most anyway. This guy is speaking like the DS has sold this well every month since launch. Its doing very well but I think its unfair how people are saying PSP is dead. The ridiculous thing is if its pushed so much people start believing it.

Dead? No, it's just getting started. I made a really good trade for my original psp which I got sick of quickly but I'm certainly glad I got another one (for free still; some of those freebie sites actually work) now that it's starting to get interesting. While we will have to resign ourselves to the fact that sony will never allow us to homebrew and that their video functionality only works well with their overpriced umd discs, we have been starting to get some great demos you can just download for free, we'll soon be able to download ps1 games (can't wait to download Castlevania SotN to my psp), and we're finally starting to see more exclusive kapps come out for it.
Sorry to say though, if I had to choose between the two, I'd still keep the DS over the PSP. Another year of innovation could change that though.

Reggie is justan arrogant p****.
Dont care what he says. Worlwide sales aren't that far apart and who cares anyway. Look at the PSP future lineup:
Final Fantasy: Crisis Core
GTA: Vice City Stories
Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops
Silent Hill Origins
Jeanne d'Arc
Gran Turismo Mobile
PS1 Downloads
DS cant compete with that. Dont care if DS sells more, PSP will have better games.
And the Wii, dont get me started on that. Gamecube with a new controller wooohooo *bends over* Come on Nintendo, shaft me some more!

Final Fantasy III
Star Fox Command
Pokemon
Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin
And DS already has a library of games
New Super Mario Bros
Phoenix Wright
Mario Kart Ds
Nintendogs
Metroid Prime: Hunters
Trauma Center
Advance Wars
Animal Crossing: Wild World
Brain Age and the rest of Touch Generations.
DS does more than compete it practically blows PSP out in every category besides graphics.
And the PSone PSP emulation is complete turd. It lacks the amount of buttons needed to actually have fun.
One example is Me & My Katamari. A completely awesome and quirky title that was plauged with with camera and control issues.
And the PSP has SHIPPED 17 million units.
@ VJ, the PS3 is a PS2 with better graphics, bo rumble, and a piece of crap tilt bar.

It's his JOB to say things like this. Why should it 'rile' anyone? He's been saying the same thing since 2004, along with 'the DS won't really compete with the GBA, since it's a "THIRD PILLAR" product'... He's just keeping the PR (R stands for rhetoric) engine going.
Chris, your not-so-subtle sarcastic jabs at PSP fanboys and sensationalistic news items seem to imply your primary interest in PSP Fanboy is mainly to get people pissed off. If so, good job!

Even a Nintendo fan like me can admit Reggie is an arrogant twat. Why can't we just love all systems for what they're worth? :(

Just want to say, I went back and read some of Chris' recent blogs and would like to retract the previous comment. Jabs aside, I think he's contributing a lot that's positive to PSP Fanboy of late.
Chris, between both you and Andrew, the site has done a 180 as far as I'm concerned. Nicely done, and I was wrong to imply otherwise.
And yeah, Fils-Aime is a tool. What I mean by that is, he's Nintendo's tool, and he's supposed to be this way. He always has. He stirs up the online Nintendo community and makes the fanboys happy, that's for sure. I don't think PSP fans need to worry about his predictions or comments.

Ah, some good old fashioned DS fanboy trolling.
"And DS already has a library of games"
Wow, you're right! But hey, so does the PSP. In fact, according to every major review site, the PSP has more A and AA+ titles than the DS. What it doesn't have is the Mario hype.
"DS does more than compete it practically blows PSP out in every category besides graphics."
And besides web browsing, multimedia, game capacity, display size, homebrew scene and ported analog stick games.
"And the PSone PSP emulation is complete turd. It lacks the amount of buttons needed to actually have fun."
Wow, good thing you're not judging it without having seen or played the games on PSP. Or without knowing which games they're porting.
"One example is Me & My Katamari. A completely awesome and quirky title that was plauged with with camera and control issues."
So was the PS2 version (and many other well-received 3D floating camera games). I love Katamari and I have no problem with it on my PSP.
"And the PSP has SHIPPED 17 million units."
Nope, it's shipped over 20 million. Likely SOLD about 17. Think about it - if they ship 3 million in a given month and none of those SELL, then the orders for the next month won't be 3 million, and they won't ship that many.
"VJ, the PS3 is a PS2 with better graphics, bo rumble, and a piece of crap tilt bar."
And the Wii has less improved graphics, all but sidesteps Hi-Def with 'you will use our innovation or nothing' controllers that may hurt it more than help:

sorry to say, yeah you DS people keep talking. I don't care. I just don't really like the games on the DS. period! I'd still very much rather play the games offered on the psp. I don't want boring brain trainers or walk dogs, or play that mario, maybe zelda. He's just way overrated. I don't want pokemon nor even want to play FF III. Sonic's way cooler. Sonic's coming to the psp btw.
Ughh enough with the bad presses already with the psp. Just leave it alone!
It's so obvious the reason why the DS sold more is because of the wider appeal of the software available to it. Cooking, brain training, nintendogs, all those cater to the non hardcore gamers. It's very much like how the family sedan or the SUV has more sales than the souped up exotic sports car. Sure it delivers the horsepower and slightly more pricey, but for the TRUE driving enthusiasts, they just won't settle for any less!

Is tht it? hahaha
I guess you enjoy getting shafted by Nintendo. GBA with touch screen "omg its so new!" Gamecube with remote control "omg the innovation" Nintendo are practically riding you ragged! haha No wonder the DS is selling so much with idiots like you.
PS1 according to Famitsu is the best console of all time, so yeh the PS1 emu is much better.
Nintendo care more about making money off old ppl, with cooking games, and brain training, and children with nintendogs and teh pokemon, and your eating it up like the lapdog you are.
Check this out:http://blogs.ign.com/Matt-IGN/2006/08/15/28146/#comments
Now THAT is a REAL next gen game, with content we've never seen before not jus taking the easy way out with a gimmicky controller, jus so they can make more money. Looks like a good business strategy with brainless ponces like you.
Go back to bed little boy, Reggie is waiting...

I would have to agree. Reggie seems like the Nintendo's version of Phil Harrison. Just as obnoxious and just as arrogant.
And nobody wants this thread to be filled with another ps3 vs wii debate. I'm sure both will be fun (although it does seem more and more like one is being marketed as a luxury for the affluent and the other for anyone who's even marginally employed; so don't be too surprised if one sells allot more units) now let's all calm down. Please let's at least keep these debates about the handhelds; although to tell you the truth I'm getting pretty tired of that whole debate too. I have a psp, a ds, and a gba and (while I really enjoy all three) I still use the gba the most for my commute. It's just smaller. Both the DS and PSP can be allot of fun but in different ways and (now) both have some really great games. This is as silly as geeks arguing about what's better Star Wars or Star Trek (please please PLEASE don't start arguing about that here too).
Just so my personal position is clear: my problem with sony is their hardware is too fragile and expensive. My problem with nintendo is that they seem to think they don't need some of the best third party titles like Burnout. So while I like all my games, they all have some problems too. Now let's all get over it.

Thank you Gonzo. For that comment, you get a Star. It should come as no surprise that when I travel, I have both a PSP and DS in my bag, and I love both absolutely. Just because you like one system, doesn't mean you have to spend time trashing the other.
I like chiax's analogy of the PSP to a sports car. Certain systems are more suited to others... just deal with it.

No problem, man, I can take the heat. Like you said it's Reggie's job to say the things he does, it's also our job to report them to you when we feel he says something newsworthy about Sony or the PSP.
And thank you for the props about the site. Hopefully, we'll continue to improve it and eventually make it the best PSP blog on the internet.

I was surprised when I looked at this article earlier today and no DS fanboys had commented yet. It didn't take long though. Apparently the DS is so awesome that DS owners spend all their time on PSPfanboy. If my games consisted of grade school homework assignments and petting a dog with a stylus, I'd probably do the same. I guess their comments only show that they feel threatened by the PSP, so why even sweat it?

I've seen just the opposite. I've only seen one DS (a phat one at that) in public, but I've seen several PSPs floating around in the hands of people on buses, in cars, even waiting in line at the bank I work in. I know people play it, but I guess they only do it at home. :D
Anyway, about this whole thing. It's Reggie's job to say things like this. In reality, I bet Nintendo is still very much keeping tabs on the PSP. It may not be selling as well as the DS has, but it has sold better than any of the other handhelds that have tried to take on Nintendo's handheld division.

How can any Sony/PSP fanboy claim Nintendo/Reggie Fils Aime of being arrogant. Who told the whole industry, that the Next-Gen starts when say it starts? (S...)
Apart from that, I agree with Gonzo. Each handheld has its niche. Racing games and first person shooters are best on the PSP. And simulation games, such as Nintendogs and Animal Crossing, are best on the DS. What you buy reflects your software needs.
And a last thing. PSP has LOST the handheld war. But WHAT DOES IT MATTER? The PSP is still a success. There is still a lot of great games, and there still will continue to come a lot of great games for it. Why is it so important for some fanboys to have their console of choise to be the market leader?

Exactly - in fact, it's easy to read between the lines, here. Claiming the PSP isn't even 'on the map', DS has five times the sales (a bit of an exaggeration) and so forth means they're trying to downplay its impact. You don't see him trying to downplay the N-Gage, after all.
@18 - Nobody is denying Sony has some arrogant players on their end, but Fils-Aime is one of the most outspoken and, frankly, ranks high on the BS-o-meter.
I don't see where the PSP has 'already lost' the handheld war. It outsold the DS for a most of 2005 and even much of 2006 in the USA, and only recently has the DS been really pulling ahead in worldwide sales (remember it had about a 4 million unit head start in the USA in March '05). With about 20 million PSPs shipped and 21 million DS units sold through (both claims are probably a bit inflated - the PSP sell-through total at about 17 million), I don't think anyone can declare the PSP the loser at this point.
What I do agree with is, even if it comes in second place to the DS in the handheld battle, it still succeeded in making a very strong showing (despite all the negativity in the media, blogs, etc.). It's already sold more than all the other non-Nintendo game handhelds in history combined, and will probably exceed the number of Gamecubes sold later this year. Faster selling than the PS1 and PS2 were in their first couple of years, too. Nope, I wouldn't call that a failed system. I'm really looking forward to the next few quarters and the upcoming games. Then maybe we'll see a PSP revision within the next year or so that will address some of the complaints of the current device.
