New Dungeons & Dragons preview gets tactical
GameTrailers has provided a very insightful video preview of the upcoming Dungeons & Dragons: Tactics game. We were afraid that those unfamiliar with the franchise would have trouble keeping up with the series' complex series of rules--and we may have been right. It appears players will have a lot to learn in the tactical RPG. Watch the footage and tell us what you think.

So to recap...
It's a D&D game aimed at D&D players. They haven't watered it down or tried to idiot-proof the system overly much.
Sounds good to me!

@Neon...
Exactly. Unfortunately I was a jock in school (fortunately?) and D&D was for dweebs (is that still a word?).
So, though this game looks like a faithful implementation for the D&D crowd it won't have any broader appeal. (I can't invest the time to learn D&D at my age...just trying to fight off the reaper keeps me busy enough).

Hm. Looks interesting, but I wish they'd give some insight into whether there's any kind of interesting story. Tactics like that can be fun, but it can really get boring unless you think there's some kind of reason to be going through the motions.
In other words, without a back story that's interesting, why bother micromanaging battle after battle with rats and spiders?

fantastic review, just fantastic.
Ok, here's the thing, This game obviously TRIED to un-dorkify D&D and it has done a pretty decent job at it. but still, I don't think this game is for me.
Not sure I get why you have to walk in squres even WHEN nobody is around.. hmmmm. Fallout anybody?? Just imagine you have to move a group of 5 around to another side of map.
Still, I'm a tactic fans, but I don't want to mess around all the D&D stuff. So I will just wait for FF Tactics 2. THAT would be a great game.
in conclusion, if you liked D&D, this is a definitely cool game for you. for those on the border.. well, it won't be a bad game, it's just that I don't have the time for it.

Watch it again. The narrator specifically says that you can move freely when there are no enemies around.
I love it when a (p)reviewer covers a game and takes a cynical tone with regards to the main focus of the game. It's a tactics game, but he seems to imply that turn-based is a bad thing and that tactics are bad things.
It's like having a pacifist review a modern combat game and make snarky remarks about all the gun shooting that goes on in it.

of course, but do you still have to move in blocks? Instead of moving completely freely like in Diablo 2 (which is why I bought up Fallout, in fallout, you move in steps when facing an enemy, you get to move a certain number of steps, but otherwise, you get to runaround freely.
That would make the gameplay a lot faster and less boring.
and that... was my concern.

This definitely looks like my kind of game! I love games where you have time to think about your next move... plan... think strategic...
Looks good!

KOW, in Fallout you are always stuck to hexes, even outside of combat. I don't know where you heard otherwise.
This preview made me more interested in the game somehow, but the anti-role playing attitude of the reviewer was somewhat disheartening (in general, that is, not in my view toward the game).

Really? well, I played Fallout 2 I believe and I think the 'block' movement only pops up when you're in a combat. but I could be wrong, I haven't played that game since I was 10.
I still think this game is going to be loved by D&D fans, it stayed true to the license, but I probably wouldn't be interested, especially if it comes out close to FF tactics.
Speaking of that, when is this game coming out? and man, I can't wait for FF tactics

Looks kinda cool. With mostly 2D SRPGs coming, a fully 3D one's kinda welcome.
