I'll let the numbers speak for themselves:Nintendo DS: 1.6 million
PlayStation 2: 1.4 million
Xbox 360: 1.1 million
PlayStation Portable: 0.95 million
Game Boy Advance: 0.85 million
Wii: 0.60 million
PlayStation 3: 0.49 million
This is failing? Although the PSP doesn't sell as well as the Nintendo DS, it's still quite a viable platform. With games like Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops available exclusively on the system, why wouldn't people want to pick one up?

PSP Failing yah right, just think if they lowered the price how much they would sell! The DSLite sells more because it is cheaper. IMHO

Yes, because marginally outselling Nintendo's severely outdated and essentially obsolete Game Boy Advance is an achievement.

well the thing is, nintendo has the PSP between two extremely well selling consoles. the DS, and the cheaper, more compact, and can play all GB games GBA SP. Then theres the extremely tiny micro. Square is still developing games for the GBA since you can play them on both the GBA and DS platforms, and their old rpgs dont need anything more advanced.

and u cant call sony out of the video game business just yet.... look at that, 2 out of the 4 top selling systems are sony. the ps2 has been on the market for more than 6 years now, and its still #2! and the psp is just a tiny bit behind the impressive sales of the xbox360. but the only way ps3 will be a success is if sony gets some good games on it, lowers the price, and stops loosing exclusives!!

The PSP isn't dead at all. It's a very good selling console. The only problem is the attachment rate of games ... right now it's very low. I own one PSP game ... Wipeout Pure, and I got that near launch. The PSP has some good games, but right now, it is a Hacker's paradise console. Moving the hardware is not a problem, as evidenced from its sales (over 20 million worldwide). But the software sales pale in comparison to even the 360 in North America, and the 360 JUST shipped 10 million consoles.
I think Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core might revive the software charts for PSP though.

what do you mean "attachment rate of games ... right now it's very low"
I could not disagree more.
There have been a whole slew of them the past months.
Metal Gear PO That is highly rated and is selling great
Daxter while not real new is still a great title
Medal Of Honor
and Socomm Series
and they are making an exclusive burnout dominator for the PSP, and many many more.
I don't how you can think this.

@2: Oh i see, so that means xbox360 is failing hard and is dead too, right? Because even 1 year after launch it cant outsell the PS2...
And the so hyped Nintendo Wii marginally outselling a $600 video game means that Wii is a failure too?

after seeing resident evil, burnout legends and bleach on the ds, it has convinced me that the psp is far superior. I wouldnt spend MY money on a ds, sorry. The DS has practically nothing that I want to play.

Having games *you like* and having demonstrated solid sales of games are two very different things.
Looking to VGCharts for data on 'million sellers', the PSP has 8 that make up 11 million units in total sales. The DS has 21 that account for 71 million units.
That data speaks for itself ...
Also, looking at the hardware sales, as of March 2006, the PSP *led* the DS ~17 million to 16 million in worldwide sales. As of year end, the numbers were just over 19 million for the PSP and ~35 million for the DS.
The PSP is not dead, but given the 'world beater' expectations placed on it by *everyone* (sorry revisionists, time to own up) it *is* a failure.
That is not to say that *I* consider it a failure ... I'm quite thrilled with my PSP and DS. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to get back to SOCOM 2 ...

man, who owns only 1 PSP game? i own at least 9:
Tomb Raider: Legend
Untold Legends
Metal Gear Acid
Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops
Daxter
Monster Hunter: Freedom
Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror
Kingdom of Paradise
and GTA: Liberty City Stories
in the coming weeks, i plan on getting Killzone: Liberation, Dungeon Siege, GTA: Vice City Stories, Metal Gear Acid 2, Untold Legends 2, Tekken: Dark Resurrection, and a few others i can't think of right now.
i also own 2 UMD movies (Resident Evil: Apocalypse, and Spider-Man 2), and the "Silent Hill Experience."
between going on the net (albiet to check my mail and read sites like qj.net and penny arcade), my games, movies (either on UMD or my memory stick), and listening to music, i'm really happy with my PSP. sure it could use more games, but it is a portable, and not my primary gaming device. i play it when i'm out and about and have to wait for any length of time (i'm driving, so it's usually limited to waiting in movie lines or the dmv or what have you), so i don't mind that there out elevently bazillion titles on the console. at least the one's it's been getting this past year have been quality.
for $200, it's a nice piece of hardware, though they do need to step up the game content soon, or, at the least, open up the PS Store for the PSP, so i can directly get some good PS1 game goodness.

It's not dead! It's in the top 5! (out of seven *cough*).
Seriously, who did it beat out?
-Game Boy Advance, which has been out for quite a while, is seriously underpowered compared even to the weakling hardware of the DS, and in any case is nearly entirely overshadowed by the DS which can play all GBA games (if you had GBC or Original Game Boy games you wanted to play, you would have already bought a Game Boy Advance. I'm frankly surprised the GBA isn't dead. Is there a GBAfanboy.com?
-Nintendo Wii, which just launched not 2 months ago. As near as I can tell, its sales numbers are merely limited by how fast the system could get on the shelf, because they were snatched up just as fast. Good job PSP, you beat out... manufacturing rates.
-Sony Playstation 3, Good heavens that tiny thing is beating out the cell-powered awesomeness that is the PS3?! Why could that be? Could it be the out-of-most-folk's-reach 5-600 dollar price tag, or the lack of any real launch titles besides Resistance? I'd blame it on the manufacturing rates again, but didn't the PS3 manage to fall short of Sony's own projected numbers? By at least half, if I remember right? And STILL I can go into my EBGames or Best Buy and find the store clerks pushing the system, with no buyers. So here's a system that managed to undersell its own limited production rates. Is beating that something to be proud of?
Granted, I don't think the PSP is dead. There ARE still games to be had on it (though personally I rarely take Lumines out of the UMD slot), and I'm sure that there could be better ones on the way. I'll be the first to sign up for PSP ports for Disgaea or FFVII, two games which I managed to miss the first time out.
But these aren't really numbers to brag about. Beating the GBA's technical fallings and age, the Wii's launch and manufacturing strains, and the PS3's numerous issues is about the same as racing with an invalid, a newborn, and a malformed newborn. Congrats, you came in ahead of them, but did you really WIN?

"Then theres the extremely tiny micro."
Which has not been selling - even in Japan.
"he PSP is not dead, but given the 'world beater' expectations placed on it by *everyone* (sorry revisionists, time to own up) it *is* a failure."
It isn't a failure, and neither I nor anyone else who posts here (to my knowledge) ever said the PSP would crush Nintendo out of the handheld market. Some may have thought it would do BETTER than the DS, but did it need to that in order to not fail? No, sorry. No revisionism needed, here. It is what it is.
"Having games *you like* and having demonstrated solid sales of games are two very different things."
Interesting you say this - because it's how I feel about the DS. High sales and games I like are two different things, and that's why I play my PSP more. Pokemon, Nintendogs and Brain Age type games interest me not at all. And while games like Final Fantasy do, the FFIII release on the DS leaves a lot to be desired.
"Yes, because marginally outselling Nintendo's severely outdated and essentially obsolete Game Boy Advance is an achievement."
Yes, it is. Because that essentially obsolete console (like the PS2) still sells very well and has historically (GBA and the Gameboy line in general) held the handheld market in a total hammerlock. All the previous non-Nintendo handheld competitors in this segment COMBINED didn't sell as well (worldwide, lifetime) as the PSP has, alone, in two years.
Did the PSP single handedly trounce Nintendo in their best market? No. Did it establish itself as a viable competitor? Yes. Subjective terms like 'failure' are entirely in the eye of the fanboy.

Hey... for those who just bought the .95 million psp(s), the system is not dead, and I'm sure they're looking forward to having fun w/ their psp. My friend just got her first psp, and I know she's not looking for it to die. 2007 is going to be a big year for the psp... if they could give a redesign and a price drop simultaneously... that'd help get everyone to buy a psp. Have to admit that was a good strategy by Nintendo.
