Compare January 2008 and January 2007. PSP sold 230k units in North America -- that's a 9% increase over last year. According to a Sony release, "with its new partnership with Skype™ and great upcoming new games, such as God of War: Chains of Olympus, Patapon and Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, further sales growth is expected in 2008." We'd have to agree with that prediction.
With such a fantastic first month, it looks as though 2008 is going to be the best year for PSP yet.

I understand that January 07 was a five week month, and January 08 was a four week month. That means the increase was even greater!

I've had a bunch of co-workers recently pick up their first PSPs... so this trend seems to be accurate.

It truly is the best portable gaming system and in my opinion bests its other competition such as the iPod (including touch) in all ways but size (though I don't want a smaller PSP). With the PSP we've got things like http://www.psponme.com/list_psp.asp?cat=Arcade LocationFree, expandable hot swappable memory, UMD, etcetera.

LOL, nah it isn't as good as the iPod for music playback. No DRM playback, no smart playlists, horrifically shorter battery life, cumbersome internet, limited to 8gb (my 2003 iPod had 30gb!).
It's a nice backup though. And the internet radio has really come in useful!

Just like the original Xbox for people round my way; nobody cared for the PSP for so long. Even now none of us are playing PSP games but PS1 games on our M33 systems.
I still think it's missing a few killer titles. The current library doesn't really impress me as much as the GBA or DS has.
Oddly enough the 2 games I'm waiting for are the vapourware Oblivion and GT games.
I'd never have bought a fat PSP. The dpad was horrendous and the screen was useless thanks to ghosting. Even so I think the Slim needed something extra (built in TV tuner, built in storage?).

james,
The iPod is not better at playing audio and the PSP does not have stuck memory, it's user upgradable. The original iPods were stuck at 5GB and 10GB ($400-500) followed by 20GB and audio file playback was all they did. In 2005 (same year the PSP launched) Apple made a slideshow capable iPod followed by limited video (aka triscuit vision), and a shuffle (w new "featureless" feature), a mini, then nano (all iPods have a stuck battery and stuck memory as low as 1 GB yet remained very costly). The touch came out in 2007 with the same stuck battery and memory concept (8GB @ $299.00).

Cute. I had no idea that PSP's were at 160gb for HDDs, or 32gb for flash? I thought it was 8 (16gb soon - wasn't the estimated price the same as a 16gb iPod Touch too?). The battery life is MUCH shorter, they're smaller and in the flash-capable devices much lighter.
Music selection is slow compared to the iPod and doesn't support smart playlists (does it even support regular playlists?), no rating system, no lyric support. Heck as an audiophile don't get me started on the PSP's horrendous EQ's.
You can make it sound like the PSP is a killer multimedia device but the fact you see people using dedicated MP3 players over a PSP is fact enough it's not that great. Brilliant for games though.

james, you're spinning yourself into a awkward corner and seem to believe all iPods are created equal as in you say they have a long battery life (perhaps the shuffle does) and you say they have 160GB of storage (only one of the new classics does). You say they have ratings, lyrics, and equalizers (they don't). Then you top it off by saying since it's popular it's the best, which is daft. Heck the DS is popular, and so is American Idol. Fact is the PSP is the second best selling media player to the iPod (brand) and I'm certain it outsells many of the iPod variants (there are many).

I can see now that you're a rabid fanboy but wow. Just wow.
The shortest life iPod is 14 hours. The maximum is 24 hours. (and before we start with "well theres a higher mAh battery for the PSP" there are also them for iPod).
It sounds to me as if you are trying to compare the iPod Shuffle (the cheapest iPod on the market at £49) to a £130 PSP. But wait! You don't even get a memory card with that! So add another £20 for 1gb or £50 for 4gb.
£180 would buy me a 160gb iPod Classic. 8gb Nanos are £130 on their own!
LOL it's incredible the see you try and make the PSP some kind of iPod competition. To reiterate (and please use the reply button) - All new iPods (and ones created since the PSP) have longer battery life, higher capacity, better sound quality (I am dissapointed seeing it's Sony making my Sennheiser earphones bad), better quality hardware EQ, ratings/smart playlists/playlists and more functions to be a better MP3 player. Hense why it sells so much - it's a very, very good MP3 player.

james, I assume you saw this "rabid fanboy" in the mirror. No iPod gets 14 let alone 24 hrs and sound quality is nothing but a subjective issue so it's void.
Silly man.

This is great news except that the software sales for PSP are downright dismal! With a horrible attach rate, it won't be long before most 3rd party publishers abandon this great little handheld. Just wait for GoW, Patapon and FF:CC to come out. If sales don't pick up its over. Blame the "Pandora" crowd for the demise.
