According to the results of a survey unleashed upon the world by Net Asia Co. Ltd., the PSP and DS Lite have very specific demographics. Taking answers via the internet and text messages from people aged 15-29 in Japan, it turns out men admitted to PSP as their handheld of choice, with 42% selecting it. Women chose completely differently -- less than 10% opted for the PSP as their handheld of choice (exciting pie chart pictured above).
Take this with the results for the DS and DS Lite, and you see that Sony is losing on a huge chunk of the gaming market -- girls. Females responded almost 80% towards Nintendo's handheld. Sony is trying to
break the mold with titles like MyStylist, but they might need more games featuring cute dogs and cats, or more mini-game titles instead of SRPGs to get the majority of casual female gamers interested. Let's go, Sony!

Yeah, I definitely agree with you there. The piracy issue is a very big problem for the PSP and if they don't start fully cracking down on it somehow it could get even worse.
Plus, Sony systems aren't known for being the family game system, while this generation Nintendo is. I don't think Sony cares all that much about appealing to everyone.

The thing is, this time around on the PSN, they are appealing to everyone.
For starters, the Blu-ray for the whole family
Cute little PSN titles for children (Super Rub-A-Dub, Loco Roco Coccorecco, etc.)
Arcade favorites for the parents (Rampage, Mortal Combat, etc.)
Interactive games for the social children (Singstar, Buzz, Rock Band, etc.)
For the gaming family members, you got your Warhawk, Tekken, Gran Turismo, etc.
And in Blu-ray game titles, there should be something for everyone, as well. Ratchet and Clank, Eye of Judgment, Folklore, etc.

My girl prefers the PSP. She has a ditsy girl-friend who prefers the DS. But she says the DS is too much like a child's toy for her.
She doesn't really like too much on the PS3 though. Some of the PSN games she likes. But stuff like Folklore she got really excited about but then when she saw it was more combat oriented then she lost interest. She only really plays combat oriented games when it's an RPG like Final Fantasy, Wild Arms, Everquest, etc.

Instead of aping Nintendo, why not have NIS release Marl Princess 1 & 2 on a UMD? Stuff like Angel Love Online (ported down to the PSP w/ Skype support) would bring in the crowds too.

I think Sony should work on their library (still). I would say that my psp is my favorite handheld, but when I compare game libraries I own maybe 20 psp games vs around 40 ds games.

Well it's my handheld of choice. I'm a sucker for hand held RPGs and the PSP has my favorite. I've almost convinced my friend she needs to get one too.
I think the PSP has great casual games, they're just not marketed well over here (U.S.).
As cute as those puppies were, those damn pet games get boring.

The real reason is that the female gamer market fail to capture Sony.

What does that mean? Don't bother, I'm sure you thought it would be funny.
The fact is that the DS is more friendly to casual gamers of all ages and both genders. It has shinier games, colors that appeal to everyone, gimmicky (but cool) touch screen, and the price is lower. Even the DS's accessories are better.
Sure, the PSP lets you watch movies, and listen to music with little effort, but so does your cellphone, ipod, etc.
Sony needs to worry about getting better games out for hardcore gamers before they tackle another audience.
For the record, I'm a girl gamer, and I have both a DS & a PSP (not to mention a 360 & PS2).

I knew I was going to get some flak for that comment. I personally see why girls go for the DS. Also to the comment about Sony getting games out for the hardcore, they are there. GOW, jeanne D'arc, FF:Crisis Core. I personally bought my PSP for listening to music but homebrew has opened up so many opportunities like streaming, skype capability etc.

His name is haiddasalami, what did you expect?
Anyway, I have the DSLite and PSP and PS3 and Wii. I prefer the PSP because it does more. The wife likes the DS Lite because of the games. It's also slimmer, lighter and comes in more colors. The screen on the PSP is so much better and I use it for more than just games (videos, music, checking e-mail)

Dehshizknight as you see you fail to capture a sentence for the female crowd. blue ray is just a type of format so that doesnt count.
everything else you said i guess i can agree with but the fact is we need more port games if designer are having brain farts.
there should be no reason why we cant have titles like
devil may cry
resident evil
more silent hill
gran turismo
guitar hero (ds is getting one why not us)
final fantasy
tenchu
driver
etc.
where was i going with this?

We're going to need to bring the pink PSP to the US. Those PSP would work. I found out girls love Inuyasha and shojo manga/anime fad. So we're going to need to release a Inuyasha PSP exclusive game. We also going to need a PSP-exclusive RPG game with Shonen-ai/Yaoi (they both mean homosexual) theme in it. Girls love Yaoi/Shonen-Ai anime and game that has it. We need hot celebrity guy in PSP commercial, those will get the girls going. If you're going to put Jessica Chobot in there make her into a shojo-style anime drawing for her (girls love shojo anime).

The poll is deceiving:
Men - Which portable do you prefer
PSP - 42%
DS Lite - 30%
DS Phat - 16%
Do the math, and males also prefer Nintendo's portable.
