Movies on UMD to receive final curtain call?

It was revealed early today that movies on Universal Media Discs--the oft-referred to bane of the PSPs existence--would probably not last much longer on the open market. While popular at its debut last year, subsequently weak UMD sales since then have forced many movie studios to cut back if not eliminate the availability of their films on the format.

While it's still strictly hearsay at the moment, Reuters reports that one of the country's biggest retailers, Wal-Mart, often considered the ultimate big honking pinnacle of retail sales, might wipe UMD movies off their shelves altogether.

Sony's previous announcement of a first-party PSP-to-TV adapter may have initially signaled a move towards increasing the adaptability of movie UMDs, however everything up to this point regarding the success or failure of the format have been little more than wild speculation and fanboy/fangirl chatter. There's no telling if Sony's late attention to the playability of UMDs on living room sets will help boost the popularity of UMDs, but until we find out we're keeping our eyes open for any crazy sales. $3 a disc, perhaps? Hey, we can dream.

1. I always had trouble seeing why I should pay for a movie two times because I wanted to watch it on the go...

2. I never understood why they priced UMD movies more expensive than DVD movies. You're going to watch it on a small screen, and not get any special features, content, surround-sound, etc.

3. just as I predicted. a bomb like MD albums when I saw them in the UK years ago. and the Feingold was wrong. It's not because of movie ripping that sales sucked. Movie ripping onto PSP sucks as well, enough that I wouldn't want to bother with it, unless I decide to plop another $500 on a new dual core machine to do it quickly, like some other idiot said I should do in the past. it was the price point and the lack of TV out. Dumb idiots. digital distribution is the way to go for PSP.

5. UMD had potential and didn't do badly in sales at first, but the pricing has damaged the public's perception of the format as needlessly overpriced. Blame Sony for this one - you can bet the various studios had to pay them a decent cut to bring their films to this format, resulting in the pricing stupidity.

Sony blew it. Their proprietary tactics for everything from storage media to audio formats is finally catching up to them, and it's a valuable lesson for them to learn. I don't think it'll necesarily translate into lower PSP unit or game sales, but it's still a very public black eye for them. One that was a long time coming and richly deserved.

6. ...$500 encoder?! What kind of complete hydrocephalic fucktard can't download one of dozens of free, simple-to-use apps, rip a DVD and drag it to his PSP?

7. It's the Movie Industry's own damn fault really. I mean, charging $20~25 for downsized portable movies that lack the special features of their dvd counterparts was a piss-poor plan. I bought the FF:Spirits Within dvd for 10 dollars, yet the featureless UMD is somehow worth 20?! No, UMD movies need to be priced at $9.99. If they did that, PSP owners would buy those movies in droves. Same with the games (though, they shouldn't drop the price of PSP games to $30 until the PS3 comes out).

8. " ...$500 encoder?! What kind of complete hydrocephalic fucktard can't download one of dozens of free, simple-to-use apps, rip a DVD and drag it to his PSP?"

Who said anything about a $500 encoder, pixelator-ass?!?! All I said was that in order for me to encode movies in the 15 minutes time for a one hour movie that people have told me, I'll have to go and upgrade, and that will probably run me around $500 in total. Yes, I know about PSP Video 9 and the DVD decrypter, since I encode my own DivX movies, and all the other crap. Anything longer than 15 minutes for PSP AVC, and it's just not worth my time, or electricity, or other expense. I rather just download the movie and watch it on Divx and be done with it. I mean, it's already in a viewable format. is it really that important for me to spend more than 15 minutes to have it in another viewable format? I don't see any reason to upgrade my Athlon XP or Centrino machines, because they do all I need to do just fine at the moment, even if they're older. sheesh, cut down on the caffeine, ass!

10. I agree, I think movies should be priced at $8.99 each. Lots of psp owners would pick them up at that price. As it stands now, I haven't bought one UMD movie at current prices, mostly because I purchased the dvd version of the movie, and won't spend another $20 to be able to watch it on the go.

11. The only movies I bought for the psp were the essentials: Napoleon Dynamite and Family Guy season 1 and 2. If sony really wants to sell more UMDs they ought to release a burner for them so we can all make our own, and give us more video codecs for godsake there is a lot of things that use .avi and I wanna whatch them. Piracy believe it or not increases blank media sales.
