Senior Marketing Manager John Koller has had a lot to say about PSP in the past few days. The system, which is now two years old, has seen its share of successes and problems. One undeniable truth has been the lackluster sales of Sony's proprietary movie format, the UMD. Although the format is considered dead by most, Koller claims that the format has "always been a steady growth."
The problem with UMDs, he notes, is the inappropriate selection of movies in its catalog: "There hasn't been the drop off that's been reported. The movies that have had some selling problems, quite honestly would in any environment, are the ones that weren't targeted against that 16-24 year old demo, or even now as we get a little bit younger the 13-24 year old demo. They're not looking for the older catalog late 70s early 80s kind of movies. A lot of them weren't alive then."
Looking at the top UMD movies (pictured, above), it's clear that successful UMD movies target a very specific demographic. However, considering the scarcity of movies in our weekly PSP releases, it's clear that the format is not experiencing the "growth" that Koller is hinting at. There's more to read at Game Informer, but note that the interview reiterates many points that we covered at GDC.

I would liked to have seen umds bundled with their dvd counterparts, because I would likely purchase more of them. They need to drop the price, and get more studios supporting them, because it's really sad that family guy's movie(good movie btw)is still #1.

They should dual pack UMD with DVD or BluRay disc for $3-$5 extra...it will drive awareness of the PSP as a portable option and still wouldn't hurt the bottom line of Sony.

I dont think its just the price (that is a major one), but its just not a feasible medium at the end of the day, i dont want to carry around a bunch of little discs that take up so much space ,especially if i need the damn case. Nintendo has a right vision being that the mediums are very small and dont need to worry about being scratched, the 4gb and newly released 8gb memory cards are the real way to distribute media. Look at the ipod.

Reality check on aisle 5 ...
C'mon, UMD *is* dead, shelf space is too precious for these things - and dropping price might help marginally, but does anyone think that UMD movies would move at a rate that would merit shelf space?

they better have the movie download thing sorted out before that grindhouse movie comes out on dvd or whatever format sony has to offer psp. i would pick that umd movie up if it came out on that format. along with sin city and pulp fiction my umd movie library is kind of cool.

Yes...hopefully downloaded movies for PS3 and PSP are not far off...but in the meantime I'd pay $5 extra to get Rocky or Casino Royale PSP dual packed with my BD disc. I won't pay $20 for it though.

OK, let's remember a couple of things to temper our expectations:
- Apple is selling download movies for ~$12 on iTunes.
- There have been numerous reports of how download movie sales are lackluster.
I don't believe Apple would have priced them above $10 is they didn't have to (i.e. greedy publishers), and while I will pre-agree that the iPod screen is much less desirable for watching a 2 hour movie than the PSP, I don't think that the difference would make the PSP a download movie selling success. (especially given the ratio of sold iPods to PSP's) ... I tend to think that most people watching downloaded movies have found another way to get them.

You could sell the downloaded movies for $10+ if it isn't in Sony's catalog or if you haven't bought a BD Disc. (BTW...APPLE would sell movies for $30 if they could get away with it too)
All they have to do is add a ONE time code into each BD box (even if only SONY releases) that allows you a lower resolution version for PSP to be downloaded for say $5.
Sony still wins and the PSP gets a new shot in the arm...

I personally own Predator (all time fav) Advent Children, Ninja Scroll, Akira, Ghost ina Shell and Appleseed on UMD which is a pretty tight collection. I probly won't purchase anymore. I have a 4 gig card for my psp with the Xmen trilogy and Eragon burned to it. I used a dvd2mp4 burner and throw them on my card!

To begin with, there are _way_ more iPod's out there than PSP's. Apple can pretty much name its price, there will bound to be takers.
Since UMD is closed off proprietary technology it will be around only as long as PSP is around. If you lose/brick your PSP then all your UMDs are miniscule and expensive coasters.
I recently bought an PSP. I really like it (apart from the ghastly ergonomics of the analog nub). I had put off buying one because of the UMD thing - loading times, inconvenience, not back-up-able etc.
Today I almost exclusively play off the memory stick (you can dump your UMDs to MS and play with OE firmware) - faster to load, easier on the battery due to no drive motor, and I can carry more than one game in the machine. If it hadn't been for the OE I would not have bothered to buy one still.
Now if UMD players were available for PC peripherals, or better yet, RW media then it _might_ have been OK.
And I don't buy the "UMD is a game cartridge in disk form" argument. Game cartridges don't need to spin-up and are pretty much indestructable - a thing to consider when your outlay in games costs a lot more than the device they are played on.
