Two new downloadable demos coming soon

We <3 downloadable demos at PSP Fanboy. So, whenever there's news about a new demo coming out, we get excited and pay attention. According to the YourPSP French website, a Halloween-themed demo of Loco Roco will be coming out soon. It'll supposedly require a new firmware (2.82) to run.

In addition, according to Kingplayer, a demo of Ridge Racer 2 will also be available. Considering the lack of new content put into the sequel, what are the odds that it'll be a level that's in the original?

The demos are supposed to come out on October 26th. Will you be upgrading your firmware to play them?

Bounty Hounds downloadable demo

Done with your Ape Escape demo? No worries! Have fun with Bounty Hounds, the arcade shooter from Namco Bandai. This demo requires firmware 2.80 and above. Once you're done playing, give us your opinion. Is it different from what the critics think? The game is now available in stores.

1. Download the demo ZIP file.
2. Extract the contents of the ZIP file.
3. Connect your PSP to your computer using a USB cable.
4. Go to the PSP/GAME folder.
5. Copy ULJS00021 folder into the GAME directory.

Ape Escape downloadable demo

We knew it was only going to be a matter of time before the downloadable game demos from Tokyo Game Show found their way onto the internet for all of us to enjoy. The latest demo for you to download to the system is Ape Escape Racer. Although it didn't get the best previews, this demo will let you make your own decision on the quality of the game. Unfortunately, you will need homebrew-destroying firmware 2.81 to run the demo. This updated file will work on firmware 2.80 and above.

1. Download the demo ZIP file.
2. Extract the contents of the ZIP file.
3. Connect your PSP to your computer using a USB cable.
4. Go to the PSP/GAME folder.
5. Copy UCUS98655 folder into the GAME directory.

Wipeout comes to an end in Japan

Wipeout: Pure is one of my favorite games on the PSP. The great graphics, music and gameplay were fantastic, but the incredible amount of downloadable content is what made it one of the best games on the handheld. For months after the game's launch, we were presented with tons of new tracks and ships, essentially doubling the length of the game for free, making it one of the greatest values on the system (especially at Greatest Hits price). While the team has gone quiet since the last update, it appears that Sony is officially announcing the end of downloads... in Japan, at least.

It's a little sad to know that there will most likely never be downloads again for Wipeout: Pure, but hopefully that means that the team is working on what I really want now: a sequel.

2.81 firmware coming soon

Looks like Sony's ready to counterattack against that libtiff exploit that's been so helpful to homebrewers over the past few days. The European PSP site has revealed text suggesting the impending release of firmware version 2.81. Most likely, it won't include any new functionality. However, I hope Sony will prepare a downloadable demo to coax us into upgrading, just because free game demos are always yummy.

[Thanks, steve!]

Killzone to feature Infrastructure multiplayer, but not at launch

Killzone: Liberation is one of the most anticipated games for the PSP. The shooter will feature six-player Ad-Hoc multiplayer modes including Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Assault and Capture the Flag. Not bad. But more exciting is the potential for Infrastructure, which will be made as a downloadble upgrade a few weeks after the game's release on Halloween. In addition to multiplayer, two more maps will be released at that time and a new single player chapter, with four new missions. I'm assuming that it'll be good and free as the downloadable content in Wipeout: Pure.

Even more exciting is knowing that downloads will be available throughout the year 2007 as well. Sweet!

Think more in the 2nd Exit

The first Exit for the PSP was a solid puzzle game, earning an average score of 77 from Metacritic. You starred as the stoic hero Mr. Exit, and it was your job to rescue people from hazardous situations. Although the original featured a ton of levels (and even more free downloadable ones), it appears that the fine people of Taito are ready to put Mr. Exit back to the test in Kangaeru Exit, or the "Thinking Exit." The sequel doesn't appear to be too different from the original, but as is expected of a game with the word "thinking" in the title, this iteration of the series will be less action-oriented and more puzzle oriented. The game will feature over 100 levels, and like before, feature downloadable content that'll extend the game's life. If only more games took advantage of that feature on the PSP...

Importers can get ready to get their credit cards ready in less than a week. A US version is currently not planned.

Dead Head Fred interview

Dead Head Fred was one of the games I said "you should keep your eyes on." And for good reason: it's an original action game, made exclusively with the PSP in mind. QJ had some time to sit down with Eric Peterson, president of Vicious Cycle Software to get some info on the game. Here are some of the more interesting comments:
  • "Dead Head Fred is a very ambitious game and we plan to deliver on all fronts. We want people to buy a PSP just to play Dead Head Fred."
  • "Currently our load times are extremely fast and we are pleased with the results... the E3 demo that we showed, allowed for 30 min of straight gameplay without the player ever experiencing a load time."
  • "The last thing we want people having to do is fight then camera when they should be fighting the enemies in the game."
  • You acquire new powers by attaching new heads to yourself. Here's a few examples of heads you'll find in the game:
    "
The Mutant head helps you survive radiation fields. The Scarecrow head lets you float on the water. The Stone Idol head makes you sink underwater. The Shrunken Head lets you get into tight spaces and glide along high wires. The Corpse head allows you to inflate with air and hover over obstacles; you can also fill it with water or gasoline to generate different effects and attacks. The Dummy head allows you to interact with citizens without scaring them out of their minds. "
The full interview has details on the graphics engine, combat, mini-games, and more. The developers would love to do a downloadable demo for the game, so hopefully we'll see one down the line. The game has still a lot of development time left: it comes out next year.

New Metal Gear Portable Ops trailer and details

As we promised earlier, a new trailer for the upcoming PSP-exclusive Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops was revealed today at the Games Convention in Germany. As you know, Naked Snake no longer works alone in this mission, which takes place six years after the events of Metal Gear Solid 3. You'll have to choose your allies wisely, and strategically coordinate with them. According to Gamespot, you can even switch control between your four allies by pressing a button. Fans will be giddy to know that the original voice cast is back, including David Hayter who called the script for Portable Ops the best one yet. Also revealed was the downloadable characters feature: you can access different wi-fi points around the world and have characters (either from the story or randomly generated) appear in your game. Wow. How the GPS feature of the game will work hasn't been revealed yet, but let's not forget the game will be appearing at TGS.

Once you're done watching the trailer, visit our sister site Joystiq for some more hands-on impressions and a crazy motherload of screenshots.

HOT PXL really takes advantage of the PSP

Wario Ware-styled games seem to be all the rage these days. We had a look at WTF a few days ago, and although HOT PXL also uses an all-capitalized abbreviated title, it has an interesting feature set that may help distinguish it from its competitor. Firstly, it has a 150 game off the bat, and is one of the few games that takes advantage of one of PSP's greatest features: downloadable levels. Atari plans on making at least fifty available to download. In addition, Atari is going to leverage the weight of its incredible catalog of games, and will bring out some quick retro remakes of their classic titles.

Not only does HOT PXL feature an incredible breadth of game content, but it appears like it will feature tons of multimedia content as well. In addition to an original licensed soundtrack, the game will feature videos, and some kind of podcasting ability. I'm not exactly sure what that means, but it appears like this game will finally utilize all of PSP's unique capabilities. Unfortunately, the game won't be available until next February, so WTF may have to satiate you until then.
