The official Japanese website for
Tales of Rebirth has been updated with more
screenshots. Judging by what we see, the former PS2 game is transforming smoothly into a PSP game.
As the Japanese release of
Tales of Rebirth is just a little under a month away, it can be expected there will be even more to check out on the official website in the coming weeks. We still haven't heard of a North American announcement yet, or any plans of bringing the game anywhere outside Japan for that matter. What does that mean for us non-Japanese? It's just one more game to fuel our bitter jealousy.

Seems that Jeux-France has gotten hold of some
fascinating new screenshots for the upcoming PSP game
Tales of Rebirth. As with most
Tales games, it has a great visual flare and the new screens show us some of what appear to be regular magic spells with a large piece of art depicting the character casting the spell. You also get a glimpse at the "Dramatic CD" you'll never see stateside. The game looks great -- we're very pleased they stuck to a 2D sprite mechanic. Those were the better ones anyway.

Namco's upcoming fanservice-filled RPG Tales of the World is hitting PSPs soon, and Gametrailers has posted a new montage video, featuring the anime intro and various battles to be found in the game. It looks sharp, as expected, but we're wondering: where's our j-poppin' intro? We're hoping it's not axed for the US version.

Tekken: Dark Resurrection has been an overwhelming success on PSP, selling over a million copies since its release according to
Gamasutra. The title's selling power has been so significant that it's become the second best-selling title for Namco Bandai in the past fiscal year. The only other title to beat it was
Dragonball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2 for PlayStation 2. Hopefully, the rampant success of Namco's fighter on PSP will make it consider bringing one of its
other high-profile fighting franchises to the platform.

Namco is promoting their new PSP exclusive tennis game, Smash Court Tennis, with a strange emphasis on gender. The game allows you to create your own tennis star, male or female. As these videos show, the character customization looks to be rather deep, something that can be easily appreciated in games. The graphics certainly represent the sport quite well; let's hope the gameplay can do the same.

Ready for a game of tennis? Namco Bandai recently sent us some new screenshots from their upcoming PSP-exclusive
Smash Court Tennis, and it certainly looks like ... well, tennis. At the very least, this game will feature Game Sharing, so friends can play against each other with
just one UMD. Namco's support of this feature has been quite nice, as it can also be found in the
upcoming Naruto fighter. Now, if only Namco can combine these two great tastes into one game:

Really Namco? You're making a
Fast and the Furious game for PSP? We're sorry to be rough on you, but we don't believe anyone really cares. We're busy trying to
debunk myths about our favorite handheld, and attempts to repackage
bad PS2 ports from yesteryear with "new" features on PSP simply won't cut the mustard. No amount of additional content will save this recently gold game from disaster, unless the core gameplay lives up to our high standards. We're being mean, but PSP fans are smarter now, and we expect more from our games.

IGN is continuing their PSP
retrospective feature by speaking with even more developers. They approached
EA's Team Fusion, one of the most prolific PSP developers out there. What's the one feature of PSP they'd like to use more often? PSP fans will agree with their answer: "For my own team, I think there's a lot of value in further exploring game sharing and
downloadable demos for the PSP. We recently released EA's first ever downloadable demo for the PSP in Europe (
Medal of Honor Heroes) and the response has been
really positive. It's an excellent game and the demo allows new users to try it out and experience a taste for themselves."
Namco's
Tekken team was also
interviewed. They'd love to see Sony make a true system-defining game for PSP: "If Sony could take the lead by creating a defining, exceptional PSP game, I believe that it would become easier for all developers to create new titles. It would also be desirable if SCE's processes were the same worldwide so that it would be easier to execute simultaneous releases."

We've complained about our lack of
Tales of the World a lot on the Fanboy. Well, it looks like Namco Bandai is finally listening and giving English-speaking gamers what we want: a localized version of
Tales of the World. This PSP-exclusive RPG is a fan-service feast for
Tales fans, featuring characters from previous
Tales games, such as
Tales of Symphonia and
Tales of the Abyss.
In an interview with
IGN, Namco Bandai revealed that "players will be able to use Grade Points they have earned in battle to purchase special items or equipment ... the US version of
Tales of the World will be slightly more tuned than the overseas version."
While that's certainly good news, we can only hope for more in the future: "Although I do not have details as to whether other PSP
Tales titles will be reaching the shores of the US at this point, I can say that such possibilities do indeed exist."
Tales of the World will hit American shores later this year.

Namco Bandai just announced Smash Court Tennis 3 for the PSP. It'll feature 16 tennis stars, including Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Justine Henin. "We are thrilled to announce that the next iteration of our popular Smash Court Tennis series is set to appear on the PSP system," said Makoto Iwai, Executive Vice President and COO of Namco Bandai Games. "With the franchise's signature gameplay and new enhancements, Smash Court Tennis 3 is the perfect on-the-go package that's made for a jet-setting tennis pro."
Virtua Tennis will be the game to beat for Namco's next. However, there's one feature that I'm particularly psyched about: the ability to compete against other PSP owners with a single UMD through Game Sharing. It's a horribly under-utilized system: being able to play tennis against any other PSP owner should offer a great deal of potential.

Game Watch has reported that the PSP version of Tales of Destiny 2 (due out February in Japan) will have several differences from its previous release. The biggest addition is the three new characters, but the game will also have an illustration gallery and a new anime opening movie.
These additions are all great, but only make it more difficult to take if the game never comes out in English. While you wait to find out if it does come out here though, you can check out our previous Tales coverage.

The other day I got to thinking about how many antelope it would take to kill a professional wrestler. After I was done thinking about that, I wondered which publisher is the biggest supporter of the PSP. Then I remembered that I have no life and also blog on a PSP site, so I decided to get an answer to that question.
Before I started looking into it, I assumed Capcom would be in first or second place for supporters just judging my library and what I typically see in stores.Surprisingly, they weren't even the third biggest supporter with only ten games on the system. My next hunch was that either EA or Ubisoft (being the giant companies they are) must have the most games on the PSP. They do have a lot of games out, but at eleven games each, they can't take the crown of biggest supporter. Activision did beat out many contenders with their number of games totaling fourteen, but they also were not the winner.
So who is the PSP's biggest supporter? While this may or may not be surprising, it's Sony themselves. SCEA has at least twenty-six games on their own platform and easily bested all comers with their release library. While a first-party publisher winning may be obvious, to many PSP fans (including myself), I often think Sony isn't doing enough to support their portable. While that may or may not be true, they still have by far the most games out on the platform. Let's just hope that Sony as well as other publishers continue to be kind to our beloved portable in this new year.

The once-exclusive PSP version of
Tekken 5, entitled
Dark Resurrection may be heading to the PLAYSTATION 3. According to
Jeux-France, the latest issue of Famitsu details a potential HD version of
Tekken: Dark Resurrection to be released through the online PlayStation Store. It appears that, like
Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories before it, Bandai Namco is attempting to maximize the audience for this enhanced fighting game. No other details, like a release date, or a price, have been revealed.
Will you feel burned again if this PSP exclusive heads over to another console... for less money?
