I gotta admit something to you all - Legend of Heroes: A Tear of Vermillion is one of my favorite PSP games. I don't know if it's the quirky storyline, cheesy translation or those cute, lovable characters, but all I know is I dig playing it. And I'm equally excited to play Legend of Heroes II: Prophecy of the Moonlight Witch, which actually came out before A Tear of Vermillion in Japan. And ya know what? It recently shipped in the States, but does this sequel/prequel improve upon its Legends of Heroes?
- Portable Review (72/100) appreciates the game's graphics: "The overworld graphics involve 2D characters inhabiting 3D worlds, for a unique, yet classic look. At the same time, numerous FMV sequences add a new layer of imagery to the game's atmosphere."
- IGN (61/100) thinks gamers will feel unrewarded with putting too much time in the game: "Ever get the sense that you've sunk a number of hours into something without necessarily getting a result from it? That's kind of what Legend of Heroes II is like. The game's plot feels extremely generic and bland regardless of how much time you put into it, and while there are a number of interesting features with the battle system and the inclusion of the pets, these are somewhat flawed with some over balancing issues."
- Gamespy (50/100) is bored to sleep by most of the game, but notes "About the only potentially fresh-seeming feature is the pet system, which gives you a cute little furball to tag along on your world-changing adventures."

Too bad that this title seems to suck. But it's not like we didn't have enough other third-rate fantasy rpgs for our psp that we could not play instead. Especially those that look and feel very 90's are all hip. At least the publishers think so. Stupid dumbasses :)

Y'know, I loved Legend of Heroes for basically the same reasons you did. I played the hell out of that game, to the point where my friends and coworkers got REAL sick of me talking about how my bunny dropped a rock on someone.
But for everything LoH did right, LoH2 screwed those things up completely. The characters are boring or annoying, the battle system doesn't appear to have changed at all, and the battles get pretty tiresome as a result. There are three boss battles in the whole game, and they're way too easy. I got tired of the battles around the desert ruins, so I just avoided monsters and ran from them from that point forward...I didn't get into a single battle until the end bosses, and I STILL smoked them. The ending comes way too quickly, making it feel like an anticlimax. The visuals are the same, but the translation went from quirky and funny to really bad. Trust me and stay away. Replay A Tear of Vermillion.

It made me smile as well reading the intro paragraph ... that was just how I felt playing the original. Completely charming. So many flaws, but I just loved it anyway.
I'm several hours into the next one, and while they have added some new stuff, there is just something missing. It is clearly not as good, nor as charming.

Well, I certainly didn't know there were other PSP Fanboys around who shared the same thoughts on this game as myself. That certainly makes me feel a bit better.
Ya know, it seems like in every generation, there are those handfull of games that get mediocre or crappy reviews that I still find very entertaining. I don't know what it is about them, but they have a certain charm that goes beyond how many frames per second they're pushing or how quickly it loads. It's all about the fun to me.

I didn't like Legend of Heroes, it all seemed to generic and boring to me. Yes it was an RPG, but it was too typical of an RPG.
Was it charming at first? Yes, but it got old quickly.
I wanted something a little fresher, hopefully we get some that do that soon.
