Modojo rounds-up retro PSP games

Modojo rounds-up retro PSP gamesI can't remember a time in a system's life when it had more retro compilations than the PSP is seeing right now. And with games the likes of Sega Genesis Collection, Metal Slug Anthology and EA Replay releasing this week, it's a veritable wet dream for us old-school gamers out there.

And Modojo has gone through each title and decided which are worthy of your purchase and which are worthy of the trashcan.

We're Not Worthy!
It's Not Worthy!

I gotta say I don't agree with his choices for Sega Genesis Collection and EA Replay. In fact, I think Sega Genesis Collection may be the greatest compilation to ever be released. How would you fellas rate these games?

Load times quantified by GameSpot

Gamespot recently wrote an impressive feature on load times for the three dominant handheld platforms on the market. They wanted to see how long it took for a game to become playable from a completely powered-down system (no standby mode, which is available on both the DS and PSP). Here are some interesting facts from the write-up:
  • The three quickest loading games were Astonishia Story, Gradius Collection and Lumines. They took up to 55 seconds to load.
  • The longest loading game is (unsurprisingly) WWE Smackdown!: more than four minutes for that game.
  • Games with the highest ratings on GameSpot had the shortest load times. Joystiq asks "Does this show that reviewers appreciate short load times, or just that better games tend to be designed to load faster?" I'd say both hold true, but as games like GTA and Daxter show, developers that care about the PSP know how to get around load times.
  • The average load time for cartridge-based DS? 24.5 seconds. The average load time for UMD-based PSP? 103.4 seconds.
This shouldn't be surprising to any PSP owner, but it's fascinating to see the numbers. I hate load times a whole lot, and I will avoid games that have insanely high loads. That being said, I don't see one minute loads to be too bad at all. What about you? What do you think about load times?

Deal of the Day: Gradius Collection $15 at Best Buy

Deal of the Day: Gradius Collection $15 at Best BuyIf you're like me and have recently been bitten by the old-school gaming bug on the PSP, you'll be happy to hear of a nice deal at Best Buy. You can currently snag Gradius Collection for only $15 by using Best Buy's Gamer Gift Card.

You see, the Gamer Gift Card gives you $5 off a $20 or higher game. All you do is buy the gift card, put a few bucks on it and use it to slash a quarter of the price off any $20 game. Pretty easy, huh?

And with the recent news of Konami releasing more classic shooters, picking Gradius up will just get you all the more ready.

Gradius Portable preview says "we likey!"

Memories of greasy tokens and sore index fingers could never dull our love for side-scrolling shooters. And of all the great ones out there, the mighty Gradius rules with an ion-coated fist. But will time dull our love for this classic beauty? Siliconera doesn't think it will.

The article makes some interesting points about the good (most of it) and the bad (Gradius III) of the Gradius Portable copy they got their hands on, most of which can be summed up by these points:
  • Gradius I and II have no chugging whatsoever.
  • Gradius Gaiden looks great and kicks major booty.
  • Gradius III has the best weapons system, but slowdown drags it down.
  • Buy it, buy it, buy it!
Best of all, the menu in the import version is done in English, so those of you who happen to import regularly (or make regular trips to certain import-carrying Fry's Electronics branches) can get their copy early and without fear of having to learn an entirely new language.

[Thanks, Siliconera]
