2007 was a pretty incredible year for PSP, wasn't it? It featured some fantastic games, such as Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow, Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions, Jeanne d'Arc, and more. Unfortunately, too few actually went out to buy these games.Next-Gen compiled a list of the bestselling games from 2007, and PSP exclusives managed to get zero games on their list of 100 games. (Data is compiled from the US and UK. Japan is not included.) That means no PSP games managed to break 460k sales (the total of the 100th ranked game) in all of 2007.
Is piracy making a significant dent on PSP software sales? We'd say "yes." No wonder Sony is asking about the homebrew situation; and no wonder the PSP library for the rest of the year is so slim -- publishers have been burned.

I don't think Sony deserves this. They also have to listen to what people r saying 2 them. I e-mailed them a bugfix 2 put in 3.95. I put it in my 3.93 be4 I installed it. Then, 2 test it, I bought a new pandora's battery and put it in the PSP. I still had 3.93

I have never pirated a game before, despite this I only buy used games or greatest hit games. As people have said it is really hard to justify paying $40 for a portable game, if developers would make their games longer and include better online multilayer I would feel differently.
I bought both syphone filter games, pre-ordered actually, and still play them because they have great multilayer, but honestly how many other games have as good infasturcture capabilities. GOW was good, but too short and no multiplayer, same with Daxter. The only game I still play without infasturcture that i beat is Burnout and Wipeout.
I cant speak for everyone but I know I would but more games if they offered better multiplayer, were longer, and had more replay value.

You might actually be able to speak for everyone on that. The value just isn't there at $40 (usually.)

I thought GoW:CoO had great value. I guess it depends on what you really want out of a game. I'm pretty bored with shooters though, so even though I really enjoyed the first Siphon Filter, I just can't get into the new ones.

Well here is how i look at this: Hackers = criminals. People who pirate games are the lowest of the low and should be registered as cyber criminals. And a lot of people here said "maby Sony should have made it hack prove" there is NO such thing as a hack prove system. And some of also said "Sony should licence more game dev." LOL how? Because of the stupid pirating , game dev. dont make any money making a PSP game! and if they aren't making money why should they make a new PSP game people are gona pirate it anyways...so why bother ?? people keep bitching that there are no good PSP games well why did you buy a PSP in the 1st place hu? so you can pirate DS games on your PSP?... the point is people need to stop hacking every new system just accept it for what it is.

I just bought my PSP last month. I don't currently use homebrew because I have no need for it...yet.
I bought a few greatest hits titles and Patapon, which are holding me over for now. But, eventually I'm going to want to play some Mario on this thing.
I don't think homebrew is indicative of piracy. Personalization and modification is fun. My computer, my car, my house, nothing I buy stays stock for long. Homebrew just sounds fun.

Homebrew itself isnt a problem, loopholes for pirates just happen to come with the game. piracy is wrong but once again when you live in the uk/europe and have to wait almost a year for a game which has been out in america for ages(rockband/crisis core) then piracy becomes very appealing i am currently debating if i should downgrade my psp so i can play crisis core before i read all the spoilers of the internet
game developers have invested money in their games and if people don't like the game then thats fine but if they no of torrent downloads for the game surpasses the sales then thats not right and thats downright robbery.
the reason the psp migh be doing so well sale wise is probably because people just get all the games for free
sony should look into more demos and possibly making games downloadable

Why not just import a US copy of Crisis Core or buy one on eBay?

Seriously, do people really prefer having home brew and allow stuff like this to happen? I mean all homebrew isn't pirating but if there was no homebrew(or hacking the psp in general), I'm pretty sure this article would not exist...

Its not only piracy. Many bough psp for watching movies, surf internet at hotspots and listening to music. Like myself, I dont play games on my psp as much as listen to music.

To be honest, this is what makes me want to hack my PSP to begin with. Not to do anything dishonest, but to download translation files (or whatever they are called) for major games so I can properly play imported stuff.
It sucks that Japan is so hardcore with their love of PSP and the USA gets so badly screwed to the point where the system is dying a slow, sad, agonizing death here (no thanks to GameStop, who purposely hides or shrinks their PSP section store by store - I should know, I work for one...)

Hmmm, I'm not surprised. Make a PSP game worth selling and prove it to be a great value amongst the sea of console and PC titles then I'll bet the game will make a presence on that list. As the current selection exists...I'm not surprised. PSP is crapware galore.
For example.... GTA:LCS...now that's a great game.

All who is pirating psp games should be prosecuted, they are doing a great damage to this great handheld media system. A lot of good games out there and all a slump in sales thank to you guys. And titles that are cheap like patapon? come on man! thieves.

I bought my PSP just a few weeks ago and the first thing I did was buy a ton of games for it. The trouble is it took until now for the PSP to reach critical mass for me. Before GOW:COO and CC:FFVII, there were not enough games on the system to justify the purchase, but with those, it finally got to the point that I had to have a PSP.
Within a week of buying my PSP I owned 9 games for it. I am what someone called an "altruistic consumer" and I take a lot of pride in my video games collection which is currently filling the mantle on my fireplace. However, I have modded the PSP, mainly to get my PSX games on it and to emulate SNES and GBA games. So I suppose Nintendo should be asking me why I hack my PSP, and not Sony.

I think the big issue here is that PSP games DID sell, but only the ones that were also available on other platforms. Because for all of the upstanding games the PSP has, a lot of the really good exclusives last year appealed only to hardcore gamers like us. Disgaea, Jeanne D'Arc, and such don't sell well at all when compared to the big picture.
I'll admit it, the PSP didn't have a lot going for it for 3/4 of last year, until suddenly, WHAM, a bunch of good titles appeared and caused me to buy a PSP (again). I know that some people would disagree, but that's how it was for me.
This year, however, there are some very big exclusives already out, namely God of War: Chains of Olympus and Crisis Core, and I would expect those to hopefully appear on the list next year.

there is only one way to completely stop piracy on psp. it is drastic but that woud work. sony needs to release a new version of the psp with and get rid of the possibilty of adding external memory thru memory stick. i rather have good games keeping coming out and no possibility to store music then having no more games and listening to music. this system is too big anyway to listen to music. i got the psp for games not for music. i got an ipod for that

I'd still say maybe only 1 game released last year should have made the list due to it's sales, and that is the only game released last year that I bought, Castlevania Dracula X Chronicles. Of course, I just got the PSP in December, and it was for Wipeout, Castlevania, and the then upcoming GoW, FF7CC, Patapon.
I am honestly not interested in a single other game that came out last year. Except maybe Crush - but puzzle games rarely sell well so I am not surprised it's not on the list either.
To those of you blaming piracy, the corporations have got you believing what they want you to. Piracy is never the main culprit behind lack of purchases. To figure this out, how many people do you know that own PSP's? How many of them have Custom Firmware? How many games do they own? If they own none, ask them if they would have bought the PSP in the first place. Guarantee they will all say no.
For those that use Custom Firmware to play homebrew, they still buy games (I know one guy that doesn't own a single PSP game, doesn't pirate any either....he just got the PSP to be a portable emulation device, granted the games he's emulating I'm sure some he doesn't own).
Basically, all I'm saying is that a Pirate is a pirate, and the inability to do so won't magically make pirates say "hey, I guess I'll just buy games". Instead they'll pirate elsewhere.
DS piracy is retardedly easy too -- just costs money beyond the cost of the unit unlike the PSP which costs you some nervous moments, but DS exclusives are on the list (there's a lot more DS's too). And just like the PSP, those that use it for homebrew still buy their DS games.
