The fine folks at IGN have interviewed Ryan Payton, Associate Producer at Kojima Productions, to kick off their week-long hype-fest on the soon-to-be-released Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops. Just in case you weren't excited enough for this project, Mr. Payton reveals a few nice tidbits that will surely please any PSP owner.
- "Single and multiplayer modes are totally integrated, thus prolonging the life of the campaign mode. Online is accessible from the campaign mode for good reason -- players bring one of their 1P Sneaking Units to the online arena."
- "We have a number of Wi-Fi-enabled modes. First off is Game Sharing, allowing you to play MPO multiplayer with friends who don't own a copy of MPO." (Yes!!!)
- "The official soundtrack is coming to Japan. It's a forty-four track, beast of a soundtrack. Norihiko Hibino, best known for his composition of the Snake Eater theme, is back with some really cool tracks for MPO."
IGN: Are there plans to port Portable Ops to the PS2, in the event that the game receives poor sales on the PSP?
Ryan: Absolutely not.
IGN: Will there be sequels if this proves to be the PSP's killer app?
Ryan: Absolutely. If the response to MPO is as good as we're expecting, you can look forward to new chapters in the Big Boss legacy on PSP. We still have many stories to tell about the early years of Metal Gear Solid -- I hope we can continue to do that on PSP.

Okay, this game looks freaking awesome. As long as it controls okay (please God please... ) this will truly be a system seller for the psp. Damn, that reminds me. I need to pre-order it while I still can!

The PSP already HAS plenty of killer games. God, I hate IGN and the overall lack of enthusiasm these sites have for the system. Syphon Filter, anyone? KillZone? Tekken? I could go on and on...

With a huge sales of the psp on black friday, and killer aps comming to the psp, I think that alot more people will look at the system and try it out before they start bad mouthing it like others are so quickly to do...
I know the controls are going to be good...aside from MG Acid 1 and 2 when have they messed up on a Metal Gear game? *post Metal Gear Solid that is*

There are many killer aps on the PSP , but except GTA games , this is the only game which looks like a console seller ... maybe a new RE . People who buy a PSP mostly buy it knowing , that if the games dont work , theil use it for something else ... they dont even know what awesome titles the PSP has :(

You know what it comes down to? I think it's advertising. The GTA series has always, even in its portable form, has always been splayed out on magazine spreads, bus-sides, and really cool TV commercials. I just don't see that type of awareness building with all of the other great titles PSP has. This Fall especially, has seen an explosion of great games. I don't see how an RE would be "scary" on a portable, but again you're speaking to its mass market appeal.

I personally think this will move some systems because:
1) It's Metal Gear Solid
2) You need to play this to fill in some plot details which connect Snake Eater with the first MGS
3) Online play (the psp is dying for some -great- online games)
If they don't screw up the controls, this could truly be a AAA title. The only downside to this game is that they chose not to include a ton of FMV sequences in favor of that comic-book style art...aren't the FMV cut-scenes some of the best parts of MGS?

Is metal gear that popular though? If anything, I think, the metal gear solid series is popular with people well informed within the gaming industry (us geeks). Just compare the popularity of MGS to Halo and you'll see what I mean.
