For the second week in a row, the PSP dropped in sales has dropped in sales. And to make matters worse, last week the DS Lite outsold the PSP by 107,000 units, but this week it increased its lead by outselling the PSP by 116,000.1. DSL - 139,835
2. PS2 - 32,673
3. PSP - 23,118
4. GBASP - 2,145
5. GBM - 1,186
6. 360 - 1,109
7. NGC - 763
8. NDS - 316
9. GBA - 20
10. XBOX - 8
So far this year, the PSP has sold about 1.3 million units against the DS Lite's 4.5 million units. Couple that with the fact the PSP can't outsell the PS2, which has been on the market since Reagan was in office, and the future seems pretty bleak for our favorite handheld in the Land of the Rising Sun.

Although losing the battle against Nintendo in Japan didn't eliminate the MegaDrive/Genesis (in the USA), I'd agree that unless Sony launches a redesigned PSP in different colors, it isn't likely to overtake the DS Lite.
Speaking of which, where the hell ARE the new colors? Without some new ones in the USA market, or at the very least a price drop, I don't expect the PSP to top the DS over the holiday like it did last year. Look at the Japanese lining up around the block for their Pokemon edition DS Lites!
Come on, Sony. Price drop and colors by Christmas, redesigned 8GB model by March.

i already read somthing saying there was no price drop planned for the psp. It wouldnt make sence having a price drop because its already being sold at a loss

Matt, or anyone else for the matter - is there some source that validates these claims about the PSP being sold at a loss?

Bahahahahahahahahaha!
...the 8gb redesign had better come in black!

Its going to get worse before it gets better. On day one 500,000 special edition Pokemon DS Lites were sold. Thats one DAY. Next weeks chart isn't going to be pretty.

Nik is right. So this time the DSL out sold the PSP by 116,000, but we know that at the very least you can add 500,000 to that number. 500,000. Think about that number. If the PSP has sold 1.3 million in one year, then that's just a little more than double of what the DSL did, ........ in one DAY! Our little black friend that could isn't looking that well, and next week's chart may prove that he has something fatal.

Nik and Ben,
Yes, DS is popular but 500 000 Pokemon DS sold in one day sounds like a complete and utter bullshit to me.
Do you have any real references to back it up (i.e. not Kotaku please), are you making it up or is this another typically stupid rumor circling blogs?

Yes, Benjamin, that is absolutely correct. Heh. Japan has a hate-affair with the Xbox (sorta').

I agree with kill - we should wait to see what m-create says about the Pokemon edition sales. I'm sure they're high, but so is the online hype generated by Nintendo fans.
Of course, the DS is exceeding most initial expectations (in Japan), but ever search for Gamecube launch buzz back in 2001? Many were utterly convinced it stood a good chance of beating the PS2, and that the XBOX was no competition, whatsoever.

... in a way there has already been a us (not japanese) price drop for psp. the psp core pack.
the add ons in the value pack are nothing but high profit margin extra toys to make sony more money. did a 32mb pro duo, a cloth case and a set of headphones cost $50? no sir, more like $5-10.
i'm still hopefull for a redesign as i will trade in my almost new condition psp for one but as far as japan goes. what ever, hey can someone tell me what worldwide sales are for psp?
