Will Sega's Phantasy Star Portable be able to take on Capcom's Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G? The two games are targeting very similar markets: social RPG games on the PSP. This new ad released in Japan highlights the community aspects of Phantasy Star Portable, but misses what we would've focused on: its acronym. Clearly, PSP is MEANT for the PSP. This is gaming destiny!
We don't think an ad like that would've been too dramatic for Japanese tastes ...

Able to take on? Yes. They both may be social RPG, but Phantasy Star has more in common with Final Fantasy than Monster Hunter, IMO.

Phantasy Star Portable is much more like Phantasy Star Universe than the "traditional" Phantasy Star RPGs.
And, yes, this game needs to come to the US/EU.

They need to announce that for US release already!

I want this along with MH2G in the states!!!!!!! For goodness sakes. The cost to translate the game can't be more than a profit for an average selling game over here or even close. Seems like it would be smart for them to port most everything, and maybe something will catch on like wild fire (ie Pokemon).

So is this like a portable MMO or something? I'm guessing not, but that would rock.

It's Phantasy Star Universe with a Phantasy Star Online type of co-operative play. Except it's ad-hoc only. Not that I mind. I sunk almost 6 hours into the Japanese demo alone on multiplayer.

I found monster hunter a little slow (or at least my character was--swing the goddamned sword already!!!) but I liked it. This looks good to me--very much like a cross between FF & MH. PSP4PSPFTW!

Unfortunantly the RPG-fan base in the United States don't all own a PSP, so the sucess we've seen of Monster Hunter Portable 2G wouldn't be so successful in the U.S., as we can see already with Monster Hunter freedom 2 for the U.S.
These 2 are games that I want to come to the United States. SCEA is more in focus of the Playstation Network and Store, which is unfortunant since Developers are slowly trickling away from the PSP.

That's kinda relative. I love RPGs, specially japanese-style ones, but I hate Monster Hunter. So of course, I won't get a copy. But that doesn't mean I wouldn't like -other- RPGs to make it this way!

I did. :) I only have RPGs, tactics games, and visual novels for the PSP.
Like Kyle, I enjoy JRPGs but I never took an interest in the Monster Hunter series, I also doubt I'll delve into Phantasy Star.
It's funny how the acronyms work, though.
