There's not a whole lot I can say to make us feel better this week. Last week, we were able to take solace in the fact the PSP made a nice jump in sales, but it actually dropped this week.- DS Lite: 134,885
21,045 (18.49%)- PS2: 34,189
14,307 (71.96%)- PSP: 26,995
2,146 (7.36%)- GBA SP: 2,330
226 (10.74%)- Game Boy Micro: 1,244
557 (30.93%)- Xbox 360: 928
166 (15.17%)- Gamecube: 630
66 (9.48%)- DS Phat: 478
580 (54.82%)- GBA: 27
14 (107.70%)- Xbox: 7
2 (40.00%)The PSP got obliterated by the DS Lite, which sold more than 100,000 units. If that's not an ass whoopin', I don't know what is.
However, I believe Nintendo isn't the happy, happy company many people think they are. I believe something evil and sinister is lurking in the upper echelons of Nintendo, much like in Halloween III. Could it be the DS Lite actually uses subliminal messages to make people fall in love and buy it like crack in the ghetto? Yes, I know it may sound far fetched, but it's the only logical explanation.

As I've said, it's all about the the long history of secondary market-supported character games. Mario, Wario, Yoshi, Princess Peach, Donkey Kong, Starfox, Pokemon, etc. -- PSP has a few new games that attempt to tap this kind of phenomenon, like Parappa, Ratcher & Klank, Daxter, Sonic, and a few others -- but how it will affect the Japan market remains to be seen.
It could simply be that any Nintendo handheld in Japan will dominate regardless of the competition. Their brand has simply become synonymous with 'handheld gaming', bordering on a modern social tradition.
Still doesn't mean the PSP is dead in Japan, it's more often then not in a fairly comfortable #2 spot.

Well...pixelator...if you are talking about the psp being in the number two spot next to the ds...that's because there are only two spots available. It looks like the number 3 seller overall, which isn't bad. The psp was a good stab at the handheld market, but sony better learn from this and be ready with it's second generation handheld. And they better not copy the touch screen functionality.

There are quite a few more than "two spots available." The PSP has generally been #2 out of several different current systems in Japan: XBOX 360, XBOX, PS2, DS, DS Lite, GBA, GBA SP, GB Micro & Gamecube.
I don't know what's up with the "PSP was..." stuff - it's still doing fine and has sold well enough to keep lots of new games coming down the pipe, and for those games to occasionally poke through the DS-dominated top 10 chart. ...It just hasn't knocked out the DS. Like the Gamecube or original XBOX, being second place doesn't mean consumers are left wanting for a solid system with lots of A+ games. Besides, the PSP has sold better than the XBOX and GC did in their respective first 1-2 years.
