Penny Arcade obsesses over echochrome

We'd like to give a big shout-out to our friends at Penny Arcade. Their most recent comic is about the reality-bending PSP/PS3 title, echochrome. After trying out the downloadable demo hosted by PSP Fanboy (thanks for the links, guys), the duo had to share their latest obsession. echochrome is but one of many reasons why they've been in love with the PSP: "The system has been on a roll for awhile now, even if the common wisdom hasn't really caught up to the fact. If you like traditional or tactical RPGs, it's practically become the destination of choice. It's been delivering on its technical promise fairly dependably, and I can vouch for a lot of the content, but I still wonder if people in general want games of this sophistication in their pocket."

Well, we're pretty sure the readers of this site want the best possible gaming experience on the go.

This comic is filled with Pata-puns

2P Start has a Patapon-inspired comic on their site, filled with puns (or as we call em, Pata-puns, get it?). It's a cute effort that managed to break through our cold, bitter hearts. Is that a smile that we're donning? How uncomfortable.

Pacapon is one of our favorites. What about you?

PSP Fanboy hands-on: The Cryptics

The Cryptics is a daring addition to the PLAYSTATION Store. It's not a game, nor is it a video. It's an interactive comic, done in a similar style to Konami's Metal Gear Solid digital comic. The $2.99 download will give you nine episodes, each of a varying length. Some will last thirty seconds, while some will span for two-three minutes. Each strip revolves around a cast of monster misfits getting into some everyday trouble. As revealed in the plentiful behind-the-scenes videos, the creative team of Steve Niles and Ben Roman was attempting to emulate the feeling of a daily strip, such as Peanuts. Although the characters are extraordinary, the situations they find themselves in are very much grounded. The humor comes from the clashing of these two disparate elements.

At $2.99, this digital download will cost roughly the same as a traditional paper comic. Each episode comes with a small discussion with the artists, and there are two additional behind-the-scenes videos in the Extras section. All in all, you'll get about half an hour of content in the download. The comics themselves are presented without any voice acting, but will pan around the screen dynamically. We noticed a good deal of aliasing issues, and found that some scans were very low resolution. Compared to Metal Gear Solid, the technical presentation of this package just isn't as solid.

So, is The Cryptics worth it? At $2.99, you won't lose much for trying it out. It certainly is an interesting way of utilizing the medium, and it's something we'd love to see more of in the future. As a fan of Tokyopop's I Luv Halloween, the art of The Cryptics easily justified my purchase. I'll admit that the humor won't appeal to everyone, but it's such an intriguing new medium for the PSP, that I can't help but recommend it.

Star Wars Battlefront uses comic-style cinemas

The Star Wars Battlefront blog was recently updated with a video, revealing something your PSP Fanboy writers have known for some time: the cinema sequences in the game are drawn in comic form, akin to the style used in the Metal Gear Solid digital comics. "We knew that our storytelling method would have to be pretty simple, as we didn't have the time or budget for any sort of full-on FMV," Mike Rosser admits.

The cinemas look sharp on the small screen, and with voice acting, they certainly feel adequately cinematic. We've been playing the game for the past few weeks, and although we can't reveal too much, we advise you to stay tuned for our impressions.

The best comics for PSP

The PSP's large screen has endowed it with a large library of digital comics to peruse on the system. Pocket Gamer has affectionately collected what they believe are the best comics for PSP. Best of all, most are free:
Also included in the list is the Metal Gear digital comic. (It's the least free option amongst the current choices.) With six free places to grab comics from, your PSP can turn into a small compendium of digital illustrations.

D2C unofficially announces D2 Comics for PSP

Speaking to Gamasutra, Scott Orr from the new video game publisher, D2C Games, has mentioned an ambitious new project for the PSP: "For us, the PSP offers a platform that users look at as more than just a game machine. At GDC we will officially announce D² Comics, which will offer interactive comics for PSP users. These comics give writers and artists the opportunity to play at being movie directors, panning a scene to create a sense of motion, and letting the user dictate the pacing or let it run on its own."

This isn't the first time the PSP has been home to digital comics: Konami successfully transformed the Metal Gear Solid franchise into a digital graphic novel. This kind of innovation is what D2C plans to bring to PSP owners everywhere: "We plan to initially support the PSP. So far the PSP has had nice ports of PS2 games, but our sense is that publishers are shifting gears and putting limited resources toward next-gen development at the expense of the PSP. We will fill that gap. There is a real opportunity here to bring gamers content to that platform which is different."

Read NYC2123, a graphic novel for the PSP

Long time reader daniel-kun sent us a tip, pointing us to NYC2123, a graphic novel made for the PSP. This impressive-looking fan effort can be viewed directly via a PSP-formatted version of the site, or downloaded via the official website. Kill some time by checking it out, and then tell us what you think about it!

Dueling Analog is, like, the best webcomic, ever

An overly enthusiastic shout-out goes to Dueling Analogs. They've been reading PSP Fanboy, and they linked to us! Their latest comic discusses the internet's bashing of the PSP, and how the mean things that people say come out of paternal love more than anything else.

Steve, writer of the comic, wrote in his most recent blog post: "Now for the record, I think the PSP is a good system... I just think its made bad mistakes. My main gripe is that the games are not designed for portable, but for console play."

You're right Steve, too many of the older PSP games didn't take advantage of the console's portability. Of course, some of us want console-quality on the go, and the PSP does a good job of appealing to that niche. With shortening load times, and better game design, I think the current and upcoming PSP library will make more uniquely portable experiences for our handheld. Thanks for the mention!

Broken Saints comic heads to the PSP

Broken Saints is a fairly popular internet comic that hit it big a few years ago. With a Broken Saints game in the works, the franchise is set to hit it big. If you haven't checked out the phenomenon, don't fret: it looks like the Broken Saints people have made a deal with Sony's Connect to offer their comic in PSP video format for free. You'll be able to "watch the latest version of BS on this gorgeous gear without having to wait for some overpriced multi-disc UMD set."

Amen.

Everything I need to know, I learned from GTA

Joystiq's Weekly Webcomic Wrapup is upon us, and we need YOU to rock the vote, GTA-style. Somehow, VG Cats and Penny Arcade always win. But, how about this entry from Dueling Analogs. Any comic that's presented in a faux-PSP has to be good. Especially when it's about GTA.

My favorite part? "Only black people can swim."

Dueling Analog's Loco Roco comic

Yet another Loco Roco comic was discovered by Joystiq's Weekly Webcomic Wrapup. From the fine folks of Dueling Analogs, it goes into detail about the eating disorder our poor blubbery friend may have. Is it as effective as Penny Arcade's comic from a few months ago? I'd say no, but you can be the judge.

Portable Ops crucial to Metal Gear Solid 4 story

Everything's connected. At least, according to Kevin Bacon JJ Abrams Hideo Kojima. And, in order to fully understand the events of the amazing-looking Metal Gear Solid 4 on the PS3, you'll have to buy yourself a PSP. The two upcoming PSP-exclusive Metal Gear titles (Digital Comic 2, Portable Ops) will establish the story for the next-gen sequel. "We'd like you to definitely play it [the PSP games]," Kojima was quoted saying. "If you change the Ops story, you have to change 4. If you change 4, it also becomes necessary to change Ops. Until Ops is finished, 4's story can't be finalized." We'll all get a taste of the Guns of the Patriots' storyline when Portable Ops hits the system in December.

New Metal Gear for PSP announced

Other sites may still be covering the old Metal Gear comic and treating it as "news," but we've discovered a real juicy story, via IGN: a new Metal Gear Solid Graphic Novel will be heading towards the PSP, thanks to the success of the original. It will follow the story of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, and not only will it feature pretty-boy Raiden, it'll have a lot of Snake's story as well. A release date, and a title hasn't been revealed yet, but you can expect us to keep an eye out for this one. Hopefully, this new version will feature voice acting. Please, Konami?

Super Spy delivers weekly graphic noir

How did we ever miss this? Matt Kindt's online Super Spy comics are updated weekly, and available in PSP format. You can download each chapter, and it'll fill the PSP's wide screen with beautiful imagery and storytelling. Each story is self-contained, so you can start from wherever you want, but together, they're supposed to paint an image of a larger world. It is stunning, and definitely worth a look.

Loco Roco comic on Penny Arcade

Penny Arcade is once again featured in Joystiq's Weekly Webcomic Wrapup, and it is good. The happy-go-lucky nature of the Loco Roco has dark consequences, as you'll be able to see in the comic. But be warned, children! There's yucky adult language that might offend you. Tycho does seem to enjoy the game quite a bit, though. In his latest blog entry, he talks about Gamespot's 7.7 review and says "If I didn't know better, I would say they were reviewing games with the wrong organs." He thinks the game deserves much better.

Don't forget to vote on Joystiq when you're done laughing.
