Mastiff floods retail chain with budget copies of Gurumin

Remember the Deal of the Day we had over a week ago? We reported that the cutesy beat-em-up RPG Gurumin was available for $20. Well, it looks like that's no longer a Gamestop-specific deal: the game has officially become a budget title.

Mastiff is flooding the retail chain, alleviating previous "supply issues" the title was facing. The publisher is hoping that by lowering the price, and increasing the title's availability during Sony's aggressive PSP marketing, it will be able to gain an even larger audience for the niche title. "Between the increased availability and the economical price, RPG fans should now have no trouble getting their hands on Gurumin," said Bill Swartz, "Head Woof" (we're not kidding) of Mastiff.

PSP Fanboy previously reviewed the title, awarding it with a 7.5.

The bargain hunters at Portable Video Gamer have compiled a list of their top five budget PSP games. Here are their suggestions:

Wipeout: Pure ($20) - It's the game that keeps on giving, with the game more than doubling in size through downloadable levels. This launch title boasted some fantastic visuals, a kickin' soundtrack, and some of the best futuristic racing ever to grace any handheld.
Daxter ($20) - This is probably the most technologically impressive title on the system: arguably the best looking game on the system, this platformer also features tons of personality and charm--with none of those annoying load times.
SSX On Tour (Discontinued)
Burnout Legends ($20) - Sure, you could pick up the newer Dominator title, but then you'd be missing out on one of the franchise's most important features: Crash mode. This destructive racer fuses the best in the franchise, and lets you take it on the go.
Popolo Crois ($20) - An unexpected addition to the list. "Popolocrois makes the list because it is arguably the strongest console RPG to be ported over to the system."

Certainly, this list is missing a few potential candidates. The recent Circuit City sale had a few hits that were suspiciously absent from this list: Lumines, for example. Do any other bargain hunters here have suggestions for the PSP Fanboy community?

Armies of the Night await you in The Warriors

Rockstar's upcoming PSP port of The Warriors has a pretty nice bonus: the side-scrolling Armies of the Night, a bonus "minigame" of sorts which has you brawling in classic beat-em-up form. But wait ... wasn't this game included in the original PS2 and Xbox release? You're right! But we PSP gamers are the impatient type, and we no longer have to beat the game to get access to this treasured game: it's available right from the get-go.

Previews of the PSP build have all been pretty glowing so far. Games Radar notes that the PSP version of the game holds up quite nicely, with some great graphics and (sigh of relief) good load times. With a budget price of only $20, this is one port that PSP fans might want to pay attention to.

PSP features more affordable games than the DS

Some may criticize the PSP's relatively high price point. However, considering its media capabilities and superior graphics, the PSP is a great value for the handheld gamer that wants to do more while on the go. Although the hardware may be more expensive, the Curmudgeon Gamer researched the EB Games website and found there are more budget sub-$20 games for the PSP than the DS (30 versus 26).

In the long run, cheaper software helps gamers. The website applauds the flexibility in Sony's game prices: "There are PSP games launching at prices from $50 down to $20, which makes it possible for a game to portray itself as anything from a big-name release down to a chintzy piece of shovelware... Nintendo's model, especially for its big-name games, has seemed much more rigid. The price for New Super Mario Bros. will probably still be $35 two years after its release, whereas the price of Liberty City Stories on the PSP has dropped from $50 to $20 in just over a year."

"The Best" budget line expands in Japan

The PSP's lineup of Greatest Hits games in America is relatively small, and hasn't grown in quite some time. (In order to qualify for Greatest Hits status, a game must sell more than 250,000 copies and be more than 9 months old.) Japan's "The Best" series in Japan, though, continues to grow. Sure, it features really ugly packaging, but at the low, low price of 2800 yen (about $25), it might be worth it. The latest additions to the budget lineup include: Metal Gear Acid 2, Sengoku Musou, Bleach Heat the Soul 2, and Harvest Moon Portable. If you're wondering how these titles are selected, don't: unlike in America, it doesn't appear the Japanese budget program actually has qualifications.

Cash Money Chaos video interview

Gamespot has a new video interview with Cash Money Chaos' lead designer. While the video doesn't offer any new info on the game, it does provide plenty of in-game footage of the game's bloody carnage. The designer compares it to Smash TV and Robotron, but with a crazy alien 70s game show feel. Keep this one on your radar: it'll be a mere $30 when it launches in Q1 2007, and it'll feature 8-player online infrastructure play with stat-tracking.

Capcom Classics trailer travels through time

The retro hits just keep on coming today! This newly released trailer of the upcoming Capcom Classics Reloaded compliation shows off the game in action, and it gets a retro-loving gamer like myself pretty excited. Not only will it feature Street Figher II, and Ghouls 'n Goblins, it'll also come with game-sharing so that you and your friends can play using just one UMD. The compliation will feature more than 15 games, and will collect stats, and save things like cheats and music in galleries that you can easily access. Best of all, it has a nice budget price of $27 shipped on amazon.com. The game comes out October 24th.
