It's official. Sony doesn't care about U.S. PSP owners who aren't using it as a PS3 peripheral.

holy shit if I hate when people say "Sony doesn't care about the us" quit whining. Tell me how many of those games would you have actually played. It's just SCEJ has been more focused on PSN where as SCEA has been more focused on making that awesome Blu ray games coming this summer and fall

That's pretty much what I said. I don't have a PS3. I don't want a PS3. I am on a website called PSP Fanboy. The PSP doesn't play Blu-Ray. How many of those games would I play? KOF, maybe, but that's beside the point. They all had relative success in Japan, not in the US, where I am. PS1 game downloads is one of the big reasons I bought this thing years ago.

I don't really care about what games we get. I just want to be able to get them, because I don't have a PS3, and don't plan on getting one soon.

After initially ranting and raving about the PS3-attachment nature of PS1 games, I have settled down and now just sigh and accept that it will be a while before we see anything like a PC shop, and hope that it will be before the end of the year.

I just think SCEA has lost it's focus and keeps dropping the ball.

I would like to get jumping flash 2, I have fond memories of my PSone days playing that game. Personally, I think in some cases its developers stopping sony from adding some games. Consider final fantasy games, why who square enix let sony release titles that they would much rather release themselves?

Hey, sorry for not knowing this and for the dumb question, but it sounds like from the comments that you cannot buy/download PS1 games to the PSP without a PS3. I do not have a PSP but am really considering one and I'm not going to get a PS3 at least until they drop the price, so am I SOL as far as getting PS1 games on the PSP until I buy a PS3?
I know generally about ripping the PS1 games I own, but I'm asking about directly-endorsed methods.
While I'm asking, how much space do PS1 games take up? I saw somewhere that each was ~500MB - Is that right, i.e., you can only have 4 PS1 games on a PSP at a time (assuming a 2 gig stick)?
Thanks.

Well, if you know someone with a PS3, you can download through their system. The games vary is size, 500mb is on the large side, some are smaller. I buy my psone games through my brothers ps3.

Correct. They do plan to have the Sony store directly accessible from the PSP at some point, though, but forgive me if I'm less than confident in them. I mean, when you go to the PSP's web browser, there's a PSP bookmark that takes you to this ghetto site that is almost never updated. Between those two things and the lack of camera and GPS here, it's really difficult to keep trusting SCEA with these fairly expensive purchases. I love the PSP but I love its untapped potential a lot more.

And while I'm ranting, does anyone else get out-of-memory errors when accessing the PS blog site from the PSP? Is there an alternate link for mobile browsers?

One last question: how does the save functionality work for a PS1 game? Is there a virtual memory card with a limited number of blocks that all games share or are there as many saves as you have space? Are the save games saved as part of the individual PS1 games so if I moved/deleted one game it wouldn't affect the others?
Sorry, no one I know has a PSP or a PS3 for me to ask. Thanks everyone for the answers above.

Of that list...
Metal Slug (SNK Playmore)
Samurai Spirits III: Zankuro Musouken (SNK Playmore)
Samurai Spirits IV: Amakusa Kourin Special (SNK Playmore)
The King OF Fighters '98 (SNK Playmore)
The King OF Fighters '99 (SNK Playmore)
The King OF Fighters Kyo (SNK Playmore)
...are the only ones I'd bother with. :\ Especially KOF:Kyo, since that was so limited in release. Sony(and SNK), port'em here for download, damnit!

p-diddy,
I am not sure if this is true for all games, but the ones I have played have made a save file on the memory stick. You could still delete that game and still have the save file.
You can also go the homebrew route to play PS1 games on the PSP. I have burned a couple of my games and put them on it.

Ratchet, it's not a matter of being afraid of piracy, it's a matter of "I don't agree with it." In the interest of full disclosure, I work in the IP department at a law firm and I insist on and, to a degree, pride myself on, paying for everything game, CD, movie, etc that I have. "Getting" games I already own from someone else is still probably copyright infringement. Ripping games I have on my shelf is likely fair use. I'd rather go the latter route - it's not the end, i.e., having a ROM of a game I own, that matters but rather the means, i.e., getting it from someone else vs. making my own or buying it from Sony.
Sorry if my questions annoy you but I want to play my PS1 games on my PSP-to-be in a completely legit manner and I just want to know how to do that.

And if anyone is nervous because of where I work, don't be. I don't care who you are or what you do. It's none of my business.

I wasn't endorsing piracy since I don't do it myself, it just ain't right. I only mentioned it because as soon as anyone says anything about "Open Edition" firmware out come the people yelling pirate. Yes I do have a few PS1 games on my PSP but I have ripped them from games I already own. So I believe they are as you say considered under the fair use thing. I see it as buying a CD in a store and then ripping it to my iPod or whatnot. I have about 30 PS1 games that I have bought over the years and I might get around to converting them to PSP format for the heck of it. I only bought the games I liked so I'm not going to pirate the ones I don't have because they weren't good enough for me to buy the first time.
