The Final Fantasy remakes are certainly a bizarre thing to behold. The graphics are a strange mix of new and old: redone sprites and backgrounds mix with strange particle effects gamers from the NES era dare not dream of. GameTrailers has some gameplay footage from the game, allowing you to judge whether or not this game is worth the pricey $30 entry fee when it releases later this year.
slight improvement on the graphic and Enix wants 30 bucks for it?? I would literally shove this up their bum if i don't have to worry about them unable to finish on Crisis Core.
Unlike DS fans who will buy just about any slight improved games base on loyalty, I hope most PSP owners have the balls to boycott this game. Send the message to Enix that this garbage won't fly.
Again - I don't see the appeal of a game where you play a bobble-headed kid. I don't want every game to be a grim shooter, but this cutesy-poo stuff makes my teeth ache. And for $30? No thanks.
Oh, it does look dandy. I just have little to no interest in FF1. It's basically a Japanese version of those typical Euro-American RPGs where you create these characters. Final Fantasy earned its niche when writers began giving characters their own backgrounds and personalities. This is why FF1 is a largely unappreciated title in the Final Fantasy metaverse; no real personality - just generic custom characters.
And yes, I also agree with Jeff to a certain degree. I don't want bobble heads. I'd appreciate a redesign for FF6 or 4, where the characters are at the very least proper scale rather than super-deformed/chibi. Hell, a moderate 3D edition along the lines of FF8's visual would absolutely rock. I might consider FF II.
I know I'm going into this thing with a cynical attitude, feeling like we PSP fans are getting screwed here. For $40 for the pair it would be acceptable, at $60 it really isn't. I might still get FF 1 ... but if I see a load time >10 seconds I'll be really pissed off!
>if I see a load time >10 seconds I'll be really pissed off!
Copy the game to memory stick once you get it (yeah - you will need OE firmware to do that). With UMD out of the picture - I have yet to see a game where load times are an issue.
I'd pay $30 for it. FF1 was the first game I ever played and since I never bought any of the other re-releases on the PSone or GBA, this is acceptable to me.
And it's not just a slight increase, the sprites from the GBA or PSone game are much much worse compared with this one.
I think it looks GREAT, a nice blend of the retro and new. Not 'bizarre' at all (look at some of the DS 2D RPGs). It might be too much for what it is, even to those of us like myself who haven't played them before, but you can't fault the thing for what it is - a very solid and classic RPG.
It's a little late in the game to criticize SD/Anime form characters. It allows character personality and detail to be seen that would otherwise be lost - sort of the whole point of the anime aesthetic. Those who dislike it are being narrow minded and missing out on some great games. Learn to appreciate different aesthetics.
The 2d is one of the neatest i ever seen. The gba version is just nasty compared to the psp. The game is dated, but still very enjoyable, and the possibility to save at anytime make this first episode way easier ( except the bosses of the new dongeons....hardcore )
Brilliant iteration, and if you dont want to pay the full price, get it in japanese version like me, the game is fully translated in english. And i paid it 20$ ( in thailand ) ...really worth every cents.
Re #5: "Copy the game to memory stick once you get it (yeah - you will need OE firmware to do that). With UMD out of the picture - I have yet to see a game where load times are an issue."
Sorry, no hacking for me! Legal UMD's on legal firmware only for my games.
Re #9: "It might be too much for what it is, even to those of us like myself who haven't played them before, but you can't fault the thing for what it is - a very solid and classic RPG."
That is the thing that really cheeses me off - I was willing to pay ~$20 each again for them, which would be a $10 premium on what I paid for the GBA version. Because they are classics and it would be wonderful to see the FF games drawn up as nicely as the Legend of Heroes games. But at what price?
"It's a little late in the game to criticize SD/Anime form characters. It allows character personality and detail to be seen that would otherwise be lost - sort of the whole point of the anime aesthetic."
FF8 effectively translated anime character detail; FF9 had a similar effect, with the quirkyness of SD. Not trying to contradict though; it is too late, and I'd still appreciate a similarly brushed up FF6.
i have all the versions of the first final fantasy game. i even have the jap version of psp one. it doesnt matter if its in jappanese because u can change the language right when u click new game. graphifcs are great, the cutscenes when the appear are great, i think this is the all time best final fantasy 1 game. there are some games i just dont get tierd of playing. this is one. i have beaten all the ff1 games altogether 17 times, and this will make it 18.but i found something new that i forgot to get all the other times, after u get the key the unlocks all of the locked rooms, go back to atlos' castle (where u battle after u give him the crown) and there is a locked room, in that room is mithral armor and wepons, a good find for me. each time i play it i foind something new. i cant wait until later in the game. well, im going back to playing ff1 for my psp. i need to train my black/white spellcasters.
Yeah, a lot of naysayers around here. But considering that the PSP seems to be lacking decent RPGs of any kind (I bought a PSP last week just for this release and the upcoming FF Tactics remake coming out on the 10th of May) I think it's a nice addition. I think it all comes down to whether or not you like FF1. For those whose first journey into an RPG was the original on the NES, I think the game is very valuable and the enhancements are very nice. It's definitely above and beyond the GBA versions, so I can't wait for future installments on this system (FFII comes out in June in Japan). Also, it's about time remakes included both English and Japanese languages. For those of us fluent in one and studying the other, this is a nice option to have available and there's no reason not to have both texts since there is plenty of space on the disc. If you are in your teens and didn't grow up with this game, then you might not like it, so don't buy it. But for those who began with this game, it's a welcome addition to an otherwise lackluster PSP library. Now let's hope FF Tactics also comes in Japanese and English!
"Sorry, no hacking for me! Legal UMD's on legal firmware only for my games."
1). OE firmware isn't ILLEGAL. You can't be JAILED for putting that on your PSP.
2). Copying a game to flash would be subject to EULA. If not expressly forbidden, it would be fair use as long as you own the game and keep the copy file to yourself.
3). Putting emulated firmware on your PSP and dumping a game to Memory Stick isn't exactly what I call "HACKING" and it's definitely not piracy.
...Let's not get too Orwellian with our terminology.
JetSpike, you need to play Tales of Eternia; Kingdom of Paradise; Monster Kingdom; Legend of Heroes (and many more). It's a nasty myth that PSP doesn't have decent RPGs. Sure, PSP has yet to get that epic title that always sticks with a given platform for the remainder of its life (FF7 for PSone), but it's got good RPGs. And yes, FF1 and 2 add to that collection
Kade, Ok, point taken. I guess it just depends on personal opinion of what is considered a decent RPG. Maybe I shouldn't have said decent but "buy-worthy". The Tales series just don't interest me really and I find them to get a bit boring and uninspiring overall. I recently tried Tales of the World from a friend, and thought it was decent, but not worth the money or time to go through. Jeanne D'Arc was a game I would consider "decent" as I usually tend to like RPGs coming from Level 5. I like the SRPGs and such (Tactics Ogre, FF Tactics etc) and also RPGs like Fire Emblem. But still, for a tactics game, Jeanne D'Arc was very simple and didn't require really any tactics so to speak and the story was quite weak. Monster Hunter Portable 2 is another game that seemed to be decent but also not really worth the 50 bucks or so they want for it in Japan. Yes, your point is well taken. There are quite a number of "decent" RPGs out there, just really none in that high 8/10 or 9/10 rating that would be certainly welcome and expected on such a system.

Meh. Dosn't look all that exciting. It might have looked more exciting to me if I didn't already own several remakes of the game.
And lol @ Kingofwales, there are blindly loyal fans on both sides. Don't make believe that you PSP kids are perfect.
