Analysts predict PSP sales of 67 million by 2011

Here's another analyst story for you to chew on. Screen Digest is predicting that Sony will sell 67 million PSP systems by 2011. Certainly, that's an impressive figure. It's dwarfed by DS's predicted sales of 112 million, but certainly 67 million consoles is nothing to scoff at. In fact, if Sony's able to sell as many systems as predicted, it will have sold more systems in its lifetime than the industry-defining NES (62 million), SNES, N64, Genesis, Xbox, Gamecube, Dreamcast and Saturn. Certainly, that's a remarkable achievement for Sony's first entry into the handheld arena.

The prettiest 8 bits you'll ever see: Final Fantasy footage

The Final Fantasy remakes are certainly a bizarre thing to behold. The graphics are a strange mix of new and old: redone sprites and backgrounds mix with strange particle effects gamers from the NES era dare not dream of. GameTrailers has some gameplay footage from the game, allowing you to judge whether or not this game is worth the pricey $30 entry fee when it releases later this year.

Three dimensional 2D Mario homebrew

This is certainly a bizarre homebrew project. SANiK has created a small demo of a 3D remake of the original NES Super Mario Bros., which only took 7 days to create. The programmer was tired of the lazy games being developed by the homebrew community, and took it upon himself to show off what a little effort can do: "I have to admit that this psychedelic demo is quite impressive. Unfortunately, to the disappointment of many (including Nintendo's lawyers), this simple demonstration will stay as such: it won't evolve into a full game any time soon.

FFI & FFII on PSP = most beautiful NES game EVER!

Famitsu now has direct-feed grabs of the PSP ports of Final Fantasy I and Final Fantasy II. Do they grab your attention? While this new "Anniversary Edition" certainly has some shiny new special effects in it, the price alone will determine whether or not I'll grab one off the shelf. Certainly, a brand new Final Fantasy game would be far more grabbing.

[E]mulate seven consoles in one homebrew application

Sorry for the lack of updates. Joystiq & engadget hit the scene at NYC's Wii launch party (coverage continues throughout the next few days). At the after-party at my place, we were horrified to see how pathetic the selection of Virtual Console games were (Where the heck is my Gunstar Heroes? When do Mario RPG and Super Metroid come out?). I'm glad to pay my hard-earned dollar on retro games, but damn it--I can't do that if they're not being offered right now!

Interestingly, if I so chose to embrace the Dark Side, I could use [e]mulator, from homebrew developer "e". This application includes emulators for a wide variety of systems: Wonderswan, Lynx, PC Engine, Neo Geo Pocket, Game Gear, Game Boy, and Famicom (NES). If one is so inclined, they can visit the site, download the file, and use a program like WinRAR to extract the files. Don't worry, there's a very Engrish read-me that should theoretically walk you through the process.

Two new Sega Genesis Collection videos released

Seeing Alex Kidd was good and all, but now we're talking with new videos of Ecco the Dolphin and Columns that will be crammed into Sega Genesis Collection.

I know there are a lot of young gamers around these days and some of you may not be old enough to have experienced the greatness of these two games. That's why I'm so excited Sega is releasing this collection of almost 30 Genesis games.

It's kinda funny because Sega's old slogan - "Genesis does what Nintendon't" is so fitting. You see, Sega has put all their classic games onto one disc, while Nintendo forces gamers to buy all their NES games separately. For shame!

Heaven's Will gets moody

While American gamers can enjoy the likes of Killzone next October, Japanese gamers will be able to experience Heaven's Will. You play Nameless (Nes for short... somehow), and you must escape a dangerous labyrinth, filled with traps and evil robots that, for one reason or another, want to kill you. It shares a similar concept as the movie Cube: let's hope it's not as awful.
