There's no doubt that the PSP hasn't done as stellar as everyone has hoped. But that doesn't mean it's done poorly, either. MTV News spoke with Sony's Phil Harrison about the performance of the PSP so far. He notes that the PSP is doing a "very good job," distinct from the "great job" that Sony did on PS1 and PS2. He thinks that "most people use their PSP at home," an oddity that he'd like to change. Finally, he praised Nintendo and the DS, stating: "Nintendo should be congratulated... [DS owners] are our customers of tomorrow."
Certainly, as Nintendo DS owners get older, they'll most likely look towards products that satisfy a more mature taste. It happened with the transition from Super Nintendo and Nintendo 64 to Playstation and PlayStation 2, and it may happen again.

Yeah whatever. That definition of maturity sounds broken.

getting mature and older has nothing to do with picking a system. Actually having games to play on your system does
still the same old phil...

Considering the average DS customer is in his late teens or early twenties, why would DS owners all of a sudden just become PSP owners?

There are many people of that so-called "mature" age that would rather play with their DS. There haven't been enough games that interest me on the DS to warrant a purchase but it is not because the games are less mature. They just don't really interest me. Though if more games come out that look as fun as Elite Beat does that may change.

all of you missed the point.
"our customers of tomorrow" = "Nintendo got the customers we should have been shooting for. time to change strategies."
at least I hope that's what it means. otherwise Phil harrison is just being an arrogant ass...again.

Sounds like yet another back-handed compliment to me.
"Yeah well done Nintendo for having so many kids buying your stuff. In the future when they grow up and they're adults, they'll be buying PSPs!"
What a prick. Most of the people that I know that have a DS are 23 or older. I'm the only one of them that has a PSP as well, but that has more to do with the fact that I own another 14 consoles than the PSP being any sort of must-have item.
I've really started to hate Sony recently. Not because of their products - they're ok I guess. Never been impressed by Playstation personally and I think it's way over-hyped, but it's not shit by any means. The PSP impresses me on a technical level but Sony really needs to decide just what the fuck they want to do with it, and if they want to focus on games, get some quality ones released!
The problem with Sony is the bullshit and the arrogance that comes out of its management and PR departments. They *really* set themselves up for a fall by being so absolutely full of shit that people can't wait to see them fail.
It's come to the point where I instantly dismiss anything they have to say as bullshit before they've even finished saying it. What would it take for me to be willing to believe anything these guys have to say again?
* Their whole PR department to be fired
* Ken Kataragi and Phil Harrison to be punched in the balls REALLY hard every day for a month. At the end of the month they're both fired/demoted. Oh wait!
* A public apology for all the bullshit that they've spouted over the years, from Toy Story graphics on PS2 to Xbox 1.5, from individual strands of hair and blades of grass in PS2 games to Killzone 2 trailer being real-time. Apologise for it ALL, as it's ALL bullshit.
* A more humble attitude. After all, Sony's taking quite a kicking at the moment - its PSP *isn't* wiping the floor with the DS as it so arrogantly predicted when it was released, and the world has *not* been set alight by the PS3.
After all that, I may be willing to start believing a single word these guys have to say. Until then, just STFU and get some GAMES released for your machines, you pricks!

Loved that one Fubar! So so true.... More Sony BS.
Motorstorm actually looks pretty good though from the new videos, but then they have to rip the Japanese off and give them a crippled game... LoL..
I think Sony is in some big trouble up against the 360, and if Nintendo can pull of some half decent releases this year and some good online content.. It could be a one 2 punch right to the face of Sony...
KillZone better be Jesus or they are screwed.

Wow. Fubar took the words right out of my mouth. I'm 18, a college freshman, and play play my DS everyday on campus, and I'm sorry Mr. Phil, but once I'm done "maturing", I'm still going to play with my DS some more, unless like Fubar said, you step your game up and release much more quality games that aren't just boring old ports.
Ah, its good to wake up at 12PM and get your day started with these news, really.

I think people own a DS because they wan't interesting innovative games, and an experience focused on playing those games. I can't see that kind of person becoming a Sony customer at any point.

Robby, you hit the nail on the head. Anyone with half a brain can see that the PSP games are for a mature audience(most of them anyways). The games speak for themselves on this one, no matter what any DSboy says. DS for kids, PSP for grown ups. Once all you youngsters go through puberty you will understand that the action packed games you so blatantly avoided are now the only games you want to play. This is where the PSP comes into the picture. Unfortunately for the 24yr. olds out there who are still putting the DS over the PSP, all hope is lost.

And by "mature," he means, "hormone-saturated sex-and-violence-obsessed adolescent American boys."
I'm 35. I own a PSP and play a DS. A console for kids? Hell yeah. I wouldn't have it any other way. Some people are lucky enough to remain kids at heart for their entire lives. For all of the "mature" gamers out there who won't give the system a second glance because it's a "child's toy" and buy into Sony's arrogant proclamations concerning what you SHOULD and SHOULDN'T like based on how many times you've been around the sun...
YOU are the ones who are truly lost. I honestly hope I don't live to see the day when I'm as "mature" as you...
Oh, and it comes as no great surprise that Phil Harrison is still a complete tool.

Hrm,
I play my psp everyday, on the train at home (when not playing 360 games) even at work sometimes... I gave my DS to my 9yr old because the games bored me..I am tired of Mario, i dont care for Nintendogs, and Castlevania lost its magic and all the other "quirky games" blah...
I need some action like socom, metal gear, syphon filter...etc.
I do agree 100% that the DS is a child toy.
Sorry...
