MTV Multiplayer editor Stephen Totilo ran a small year-long experiment to see which handheld system was more popular with NYC subway commuters. He recently posted about his latest findings and it showed that the PSP was the popular choice. PSP beat out the Nintendo DS (the only one with a fighting chance) by about 30 percent. It also beat out the GBA with a ratio of ten to one. Here's a funny quote from Totilo: "Sony, if the whole world was the C Train, your handheld would destroy. (But given the quality of the C Train, I might have to find a new planet.)" Agreed, the C Train is pretty bad. We don't know where you're heading Stephen, but we recommend the 4 or 5. It's slightly better. Slightly. There's a pretty good number of PSPs there, too.

Yep 4/5 is my train of choice in the mornings. Although I don't bust out my PSP unless I get a nice spot at the end or next to a door.

I was getting my lunch in a local Vietnamese Pho shop here in downtown Seattle the other day and a bunch of business men in suits were sitting there with their PSPs... Made me realize the PSP is in the hands of more than just hardcore gamers. It was nice to see.

I rock my PSP on the 26/28 to Fremont and I see others come out of there hiding on occasion.

Not too sure why the east side got all the nice trains while most of the west got those crappy ones. I ride the C frequently -- it's sad, but hey, it beats paying for gas :)

I rock my PSP on the Q but only when old ladies and such are on the train. Don't wanna be on PSP Fanboy one day with an article bout my prized silver friend being stolen by some idiot.

I bebop my PSP on the bus to the projects whether or not I'm surrounded by old ladies. The key question is whether you feel sinister or mocking attention coming from any of the other riders, not whether the majority are old and female. There's a point at which staying observant and low-key takes precedence over generalizations.
I'm not accusing you of sexism or ageism. I'm only saying that literal-mindedness can be a liability in urban settings.

Speaking of safety and innocent generalizations that can be taken the wrong way:
One reason I'm more inclined to carry a PSP among fellow Projects denizens is because PSPs are accepted as masculine but DS Lites aren't. (That shouldn't matter but can if you live in, say, Loisada and your taste in clothes makes you a tad conspicuous.)

Well yeah , most guys who own a PSP are actually old enough to have the guts to take it out on the subway ... not like 7 year old DS owners whom are afraid of robbery :P ( jk ) .
