Wishlist: Ten changes to the PSP

We love the PSP. But it's not perfect, is it? Certainly, there are a few things that could be changed. Tech Digest has a wishlist with ten suggestions to Sony. Do you agree with some, or all, of them?
  • No more UMDs: "faster load times, the increased battery life and the dramatically reduced risk of PSP shuriken injury."
  • Hard drive, please: "it is high time we thought beyond the limitations of what the Memory Stick format has to offer."
  • Better Wi-Fi: "let's up the ante with faster wireless connectivity. Because 802.11b was like totally 2005."
  • Increased battery life: "Currently, you can expect between 4-8 hours of juice from your PSP's battery ... Surely we can do better than this by now."
  • Brighter screen
  • No more console ports: "A lot of the blame lies in Sony's non-committal to first-party development on the PSP" (Ironically, their most wanted game is still a port: Gran Turismo 4)
  • Bluetooth: "the PS3 has Bluetooth, so I'm seeing a clear opportunity for the PSP to double up as full blown wireless controller."
  • Even better Remote Play: "Give the PSP the power to turn your PS3 on and off. Let me browse content while my flat mates are getting repeatedly pwned at Resistance. And if it eats up their bandwidth, who cares?"
  • Touch screen? Tilt control? "Why not have some touch screen functionality? But if that's still too limiting, why not have full set of six-axis motion detection to boot?"
  • PSP-PS3 networked gaming: "PlayStation Home looks like it might be the ideal testing ground for just such an idea; the PS3 can act as the main programming platform for your own virtual home, while the PSP could simply let you hang out in your pad and check out others while you're away form the main console."
Many of these revisions are ambitious, to say the least. While we may not see any of these features until a real PSP2 comes out, it's still fun to dream. What else would you add?

PSP game tops most-wanted list; Andrew horrified

Do you see something wrong with this picture? I logged into my Club IGN account, and I was horrified at the "Top in Wishlists" info. While it's great that it's a PSP game, why would it be this one?! Somehow, Jackass: The Game has beaten the likes of Super Smash Bros on Wii and Halo 3 on Xbox 360. Is IGN pulling another prank? Or, do people really want Jackass-on-the-go?

Our most wanted PSone games

We have faith that one day, the PlayStation Store will be accessible via PSP without the need for a PS3, and will flourish into a glorious realm of classic games, one that will be untouched by the competition. Of course, homebrew users will rip their own games ... but for the rest of us, this is my personal wishlist of PSone games that I'd like to see available for download.

IGN readers wish for firmware upgrades

The over-abundance of PSP firmware upgrades has frustrated even the mainstream media. Quite possibly inspired by my own list of grievances, IGN wrote up a letter to Sony detailing what they'd like to see in future firmware releases. Their requests included the integration of the PlayStation Network and Store into the PSP, media support, and enhanced Remote Play functionality. Wait, that sounds almost exactly like what I wanted! Truth is, many PSP fans want the same things out of our system. IGN's readers sent in a few of their ideas:
  • "I would love to see homebrew accepted through the psp firmware."
  • "PDF. E-Books are a happy thing, escpecially [sic] if you want to use your PSP at school or work without getting beaten."
  • "Folders within Folders would be an awesome feature, I love categorizing my music in certain ways, such as Metal, Rock, Video Games, and beyond that folders for individual bands, and if nessesary, another level for albums."
  • "I want to be able to send Mp3s/WMAs via Ad-Hoc, as you can do with pictures."
  • "I would love to see a virtual console on the psp....Genesis, pc engine, Neo Geo, etc."
  • "I would also like some true streaming video support."
  • "Get rid of the current text input (cell phone number pad) and make a new one with a qwerty style input ( like used in Socom FTB or Syphon Filter)."
This, good reader, sounds like a lot like your feedback. Doesn't Sony get the point now... PSP fans want the same things! Unite, and maybe Sony will finally listen to their fan base!
