Umihara Kawase playable in Flash demo

What is Umihara Kawase? It's a platformer "starring a nineteen year old Japanese school girl of the same name, who has somehow become lost in a world of mutated salt-water and fresh-water creatures." And it's coming to PSP.

Considering a release stateside is unlikely, you can try out the Bionic Commando-styled gameplay by playing the online Flash demo. Use the NUMPAD to move around, and press Enter when you want to swing around. If you enjoy it, you may want to consider importing it.

Battle Kingdoms!!: a free turn based adventure game

Darren Reid and NextGenBooks.com have created an interesting new game for PSP owners. The Half Broken Crown: Battle Kingdoms!! is a turn based adventure game based on Darren Reid's upcoming fantasy novel. Players must go against a horde of monsters, thieves, villians and heroes, whilst leveling up and improving their skills.

This new PSP adventure is a Flash file that will play from the PSP browser. Other platforms, such as Wii and PS3 are being considered in the future. However, most exciting must be the news that future updates may add online peer-to-peer combat. Could this be the most ambitious PSP Flash game yet?

Battle Kingdoms!! can be downloaded for the PSP or played online from www.NextGenBooks.com/battlekingdoms.

Crazy Taxi: Fare Wars minigame drives us mad

We commend the effort, Sega. But this is NOT how you should be promoting your upcoming PSP game, Crazy Taxi: Fare Wars. Just like Crazy Taxi, this frustrating Flash game has you driving around town, picking up passengers and dropping them off. However, the controls and level design are so nonsensical that the game becomes more of a frustrating exercise of self-ridicule. Maybe the intent behind this game was to make the player say: "Gee golly, that game sure was un-swell. I know Crazy Taxi will do a better job than this! Let me buy it now!"

Unlikely. Honestly, Crazy Taxi looks to be a lot of fun on PSP. It's too bad this Flash game does such a poor job of selling the title.

Ask PSP Fanboy: Volume 12

Every Saturday, PSP Fanboy will answer your burning questions. If you have a question for the team, send an e-mail to andrew @ pspfanboy.com with the subject "Ask PSP Fanboy."

Q: Is there any way to watch YouTube (or a similar website) directly on my PSP with the web browser?
A: No. Sony hinted that the functionality would arrive in a later firmware upgrade, but that hasn't happened yet. You have two options with YouTube: you can convert the videos and save them to Memory Stick, or you can use Remote Play. If it works for you, the Remote Play internet browser is able to stream Flash video to your system.

Q: Are there any free programs which can change Real media files to be played on my PSP?
A: People still use RealPlayer? The format, to my knowledge, is pretty much obsolete. You can use Media-Convert to try to use them, but remember: you can't convert DRM-protected files, nor can you convert files that have no video data in them. If your .rm file looks really tiny (just a few bytes), it won't convert.

Q: Do you have any suggestions for any good games that utilize my router?
A: The big one to get is probably Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops. Other candidates include SOCOM, Medal of Honor, Ratchet & Clank and Killzone: Liberation.

Diner Dash for PSP

Casual games are getting more popular than Pokemon porn lately and so it shouldn't be any surprise that Diner Dash is coming to the PSP. For those unfamiliar with the game, it involves seating customers, picking up orders, serving food, getting paid, cleaning tables and keeping customers happy. Diner Dash started out as a highly popular flash game, but has spawned mobile and downloadable versions as well.

Judging from the few screens released, it looks simultaneously better and worse than its PC counterpart, which in of itself can be counted as a unique achievement. Plus, finally I can fulfill my desire to wait on annoying customers in a crowded restaurant and not get paid! But what's up with having to use a cursor on a PSP game? If I wanted to play Diner Dash on the PC, I'd already have upgraded from the Apple IIe I currently use.

Some PSP owners and non-owners believe the system needs more quick-play experiences. Will Diner Dash satisfy these people? Let's pretend like we care and await their response, when Diner Dash hits store shelves in May.

Pretending to play your PSP

If you're reading this blog entry, chances are, you're not playing with your PSP. Don't worry! "Virtual PSP," a Flash game, will allow you to pretend like you're playing your PSP on your computer. It's a very clever fan made homage to Sony's system that includes a clever take on the XMB, and a few UMDs as well.

Of course, you might also be reading this article from your PSP. Then, things get really weird. You'll be playing a game about playing the PSP ... on your PSP. Hmm. Be careful! This kind of logic can destroy the universe!

Play Flash games from your browser

While you're waiting for today's edition of PSP Fanboy Theatre to arrive, why not warm up your PSP's wi-fi card by accessing psponme.com? It's a very well organized collection of Flash games, playable through your PSP's internet browser. You can browse by category, and even download the games for offline play. With an impressive amount of games, and a surprising amount of variety, this fan effort colored me impressed.

Convert YouTube videos for PSP really easily

The PSP is supposed to play Flash video one of these days ... but considering Sony's slow adoption of features we really want, we wouldn't hold our breath for it. Until then, there's a ridiculously easy solution for converting videos from sites like YouTube ... and it doesn't even involve downloading any software!

1. Get the URL of the video you want.
2. Copy URL into the "FLV Online Converter" at vixy.net
3. Choose "MP4 for iPod/PSP"
4. Wait for the conversion, download file, and then save it to your PSP under the "VIDEO" folder.

Does it get any easier than this? Not really. I found it to work quite quickly, with some impressive results.

Brain training on your internet browser

Did you know that the Nintendo DS isn't the only system that can train your brain? In Japan, Sega created their own mildly-successful edutainment games that required you to do math at the speed of light. AZ92 from the PlayStation forums is hosting a few Flash demos of the game, formatted for the PSP. You can use m.pspfanboy.com to play these short demos, directly from your PSP.

PS3 XMB walkthrough reveals updated Flash client for PSP

Our sister site Engadget has been giving its readers an extensive look into the upcoming PLAYSTATION 3. We've seen the sleek PSP-inspired XMB of the console before, but this goes into a lot more depth about the system's functionality. Interestingly, a Sony employee talks casually about a new Flash player in the PSP browser in a future, unreleased firmware, at around 12:20 in the video. With the firmware upgrade, PSP owners will be able to watch Flash videos used on sites like YouTube, and here at PSP Fanboy.

This makes us very happy. When this firmware upgrade happens, you'll be able to watch all the videos we put up here when you access PSP Fanboy through the PSP (via m.pspfanboy.com). Hopefully, the PS3 launch later this month will reveal even more functionality for our system.

[Thanks, Jess!]

Visiting Day: a quirky Flash game

Mike Bithell has just created a new Flash game, made exclusively with the PSP in mind. It has great vector graphics, great style, and a really sleek menu. The game is a series of rather simple minigames, having you fight an alien invasion. WIth multiple difficulties, a psuedo-multiplayer option, and a "story mode," this Flash game goes above and beyond the fan norm. It's not perfect, though: it can use a bit of music, and I didn't know that you had to leave the analog stick at the bottom right at all times. With some music, a few GUI changes, and a little bit of clarification (for example: you can't progress in Story mode unless you fail!), Mike Bithell might have something truly complete. Wish you luck on your professional endeavors, man.

Visit Mike's PSP-compatible website for the download. For users with 2.70 firmware and above.

Keyboard coming Spring according to contest

One of the features that fans have been clamoring for on the PSP has been keyboard support. While we've seen one potential keyboard accessory die, it appears that another one is coming down the horizon. At least, according to a new contest sponsored by FITC and Silver Platter. The contest asks for talented coders to make a Flash application that'll utilize the keyboard. Winners will win UMDs from Silver Platter, PlayGear headphones and PlayGear cases. The first prize winner will get tickets to FITC Hollywood and also have their application packaged with the keyboard, coming this spring.

The contest ends September 21st, so coders should get moving quickly. Hopefully, we'll find out more information about this peripheral soon enough.

Putting Flash games on the PSP

The Flash functionality of the PSP can provide hours of entertainment for gamers who've made the jump into greater firmware revisions. You may remember chubigan's Flash Arcade from a while back, but now you want to add Flash files of your own to your PSP. But the problem is, what if you're not too computer savvy? Thankfully, this video is a pretty easy (but notably boring) way of learning the process of finding SWF files, putting them to your PSP, and then finally, accessing them.

PSP Flash Arcade collection

Tired of all the talk of homebrew games? Have a fully upgraded 2.71 firmware PSP and want to play some games legally? Well, chubigans from IGN has been running an excellent series called PSP Flash Arcade. He has searched the vastness of the Internet to hand-pick games that work in a Flash-enabled PSP browser. As if that weren't awesome enough, his latest update packages all twelve of the games he's discovered into one convenient zip file. It's less than 2 megs, so even those of you with 32MB sticks can enjoy. So, how does it work?
  • Download the file. Then make a folder in the ROOT of your PSP memory stick (where the MP_ROOT and PSP folders are.) and title it "flash" or whatever you'd like.
  • Next, place the files in that folder. Go to your PSP web browser and type file:/flash/psparcade.htm and away you go! (Bookmark it for easier access!)
  • Note that you MUST have 2.7 firmware installed on your PSP, and have activated flash in your browser.
Check out chubigan's blog every week for more Flash fun.
