The PC-based PLAYSTATION Store opened late into the year, and already it has amassed an impressive collection of downloadable games. From PS1 games, to archived UMD games, to brand new originals, we've had a number of quality games from the Store's launch. We can't wait to see what 2008 has waiting for us.
And the nominees for PSP Fanboy - Best Downloadable Game of 2007 are:
Beats
London Studio | Sony Computer Entertainment

London Studio | Sony Computer Entertainment

Beats is one of the rare games that simply can't be done on any other system. The game will let you turn the music stored on your PSP Memory Stick into DDR-styled levels. Finally, a music game where all the gameplay comes from music YOU love. Add a fun synthesizer which lets you create your own tunes, and you have a game that's easily worth more than the $5 the Store asks for.
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
Konami | Konami

Konami | Konami

Symphony of the Night is thought by many to be the definitive Castlevania game. With its re-release on the PS Store, players will be able to get a pixel-perfect recreation of this classic 2D platformer at a price that eBay wouldn't let you dream of.
Syphon Filter: Combat Ops
Sony Bend | Sony Computer Entertainment

Sony Bend | Sony Computer Entertainment

This downloadable title enhances the great Syphon Filter multiplayer mode by adding an extensive level editor. Players can create their own levels, upload it to the PSN, and have users rate their creations after playing them. An included Friends list and integration with the PSN make Combat Ops one of the most exciting multiplayer games around.

Beats, hands down. Tons of replay values since you can use your own music. You can pick up and play, so unlike a lot of psp games it actually is quite portable, plus its just a lot of fun.

Destruction Derby deserves a mention. The footprint on a memory stick and the mindless, on-the-go fun are worth the five bucks. Although I admit the other three on the short list are probably better, DD should have the number 4 spot.

I hate to the a total killjoy... but with you I'll make an exception. Both Phase on iPod and Dance Factory on PS2 are capable at performing this feat.
Stop acting like PSP is the end-all-be-all portable music player. It's not. I see this blog has inherited Sony PR's penchant for misplaced superlative.

Yeah, I agree. Beats-like-gameplay can and has been done on other systems. It's also the only reason I'd ever put MP3s on my PSP in the first place. I only listen to MP3s while hiking/biking, and dragging the PSP with me? Not a viable option. I'm sure some people get some use out of it, though.

How about Crash Bandicoot? I just downloaded it the other night and the graphics and colors look just as good as any other new game I have seen for the PSP.

Symphony of the night you wackjobs! Thats the most insanely amazing game of all time. *sigh* you really can see that most of the people who post here have no love for classic gaming. No denying beats is good, but how can everyone rule out the best thing to ever make it on a CD, EVER. What the hell is wrong with our society! this one should be a no-brainer. tisk tisk tisk.. shame on you PS fanboys for showing no love to the #1 PS1 game of all time. (more like #1 game of all time, no game can TOUCH this one)
