Handheld games rarely burn up the charts. However, in a crowded month of games like Guitar Hero III, Halo 3, and The Orange Box, Square Enix's PSP remake of Final Fantasy Tactics managed to churn out about 100,000 copies sold in the month of October. Certainly, the launch of the redesigned PSP helped sales of the title. But, it managed to beat out other anticipated PSP titles, such as Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron and Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles, according to GameDaily BIZ.
While The War of the Lions enjoys some success in the States, its true victory was in Japan, where a significant marketing campaign (with television ads) helped propel the game to a number one position, selling over 242,000 copies in the territory. The total sales of the game should provide enough proof that the PSP and Square Enix work perfectly together. It'll be interesting to see if Crisis Core can make a bigger splash when it eventually gets released in the States.

That's pretty surprising considering how horrible the port is. I swear, the game is nearly unplayable due to its lag. I also wasn't a fan of the new translation and actually (gasp!) prefer the old one.

Hmm... I don't get much lag at all on my copy.

I haven't played the game, but isn't the new translation supposed to be all grammatically correct and make sense and stuff?

The game plays fairly well, except when someone does special moves or something that requires some graphical processing (magic, summons, etc.). Once that occurs, it's like everything slows down to a halt. I have both the original FFT PSX version and the War of the Lions game, and when comparing them back to back, it's a night and day difference.
As far as the script goes, it seems that Square-Enix is on this trend of butchering English by combining various elements of Early Modern English (aka Renaissance English) and Modern English (aka Present-Day English) into one script. They did this with FFXII, and they did it again with the new FFT port. As an English major, this really gets on my nerves. It may be nitpicking, but I thought the original translation had more character to it...if that makes any sense.

I don't get much lag at all on my copy. Compared to playing it on the PS1, it's hella-fast, in fact.

I agree with Tom. This port is a disgrace... doesn't deserve its best seller status.

I hope this shows SE that people want more great PSP games. Plus SE did say that Vagrant Story might come out on the PSP. Seeing as FFT sold well I wonder if Vagrant Story really will come out on the PSP.

This is great news. More square enix on PSP = good thing, IMO. Crisis Core never set my world on fire, but I'd be thrilled to see Vagrant Story show up for PSP. And what about Tactics Ogre? Do I need to start a letter writing campaign on that?
