Don't throw out your handhelds: there's a lot of life left in them. According to an analyst at DFC Intelligence, the ever-expanding market for both DS and PSP will help allow it to beat the current generation systems: "Under the right scenario, by 2011 the combined installed base of the DS and PSP could exceed that for the Nintendo Wii, Sony PlayStation 3 and Microsoft Xbox 360," noted David Cole. While Nintendo will be responsible for much of the growth of the handheld industry, Sony is certainly not out of the game--they will "establish a solid position in the marketplace" (if they haven't already). Cole reminds investors that "existing console game publishers have found it is possible to make over $100 million in revenue from a single PSP title based on the right franchise," a figure that's not to be scoffed at.
Ultimately, PSP's success will be determined by a number of factors, with Sony's support for the platform being key. Sony said they're working on exciting new things for the platform at GDC--hopefully, it's true.

I think it's very possible that portables will one day outsell stationaries. Think laptops.

I'm think psp has already established itself in the handheld market. I don't know what percent marketshare psp holds, but I imagine it should be a nice piece.
As far as support, all I want from Sony is to be able to download ps1 games without needing ps3, and maybe integrating the playstation network within psp. With such a platform, developers might see it more worthwhile and convenient to create online features for their games. Also, you could have a buddy list, voice chat, messaging, and whatever else.
C'mon Sony you can do it.

Ugh, dudes, this isn't news - this is OLD! It's happenning as we speak. There's a raving momentum going in favour of handhelds. DS is leading, and PSP is doing better than the homeconsoles in certain territories. I certainly believe this to be a present phenomenon more than a hypothesis, and it pleases me to see such a trend, because I shamelessly confess being a slave to this trend.

Ugh...I hope that's not the case. Handheld gaming is so uninvolving most of the time....it's just something to do while waiting in line, really. From my experience, people I've met will be all about the PSP or all about the DS for a few months. And then interest sharply drops off and they play consoles again.
Going portable would be akin to trading in my PC for my PocketPC...there's no way I'd do that.

Handhelds are cheaper and more convenient- if I brought my psp or DS to work, I could play at lunch, on break, after work and rack up 10 hours a week fairly easily. Long car trips, bus/train/subway rides, etc.

I stopped caring what "analyists" think when they kept saying again and again the PSP was going to see a price drop (not to mention a redesign) LAST year. PSP has seen neither despite the "analyists" claims.

Look at the fact that the 3 top handhelds (DS, GBA & PSP in 2006 sales order) have combined for >70 million in sales over the last 2+ years ... amazing stuff.

It is so silly that others think they know when you play with the hand held aka "it's just something to do while waiting in line" that is simply not true. Sure its great to take with you to pass time when you have it, but it is also a very fun system. Yes my pc games eat its lunch for the most part on the PSP and every sense of the word for the DS but there are games that are just as involved on the PSP. And there are games that are as much fun, I love playing many PSP while laying on the couch, or lounging in my swing in the backyard and many other instances away form home. There are many instances where a portable is my preference just for the creature comfort. I truly see one day that your take your portable with you and when you get home you plug it into the TV and the controllers into the portable. I know this has been done but what I mean the power of the Hand Held catches up to the power of the console. The PSP has come a long way proving this, much more than the much techinically inferior DS. I could see a PSP2 having more power than the PS2 by a good margin, if that is the case then it would not be far off from the Wii in terms of processing power.

Interesting. Not sure I believe the prediction, but it's interesting. I personally only play my PSP right now, nothing else. I'd like to get a PS3 but haven't (yet) because of cost. I absolutely love my PSP and play it probably 10-15 hours a week. (That's a lot for me; I work 50 hours a week and have 3 kids in the house, oy.) I realize the PSP isn't for everyone, and I admit that while the graphics are the best I've ever seen on a handheld, I wish they could be bigger/better, but for now, it freakin rocks. What else can you play in bed after your wife has fallen asleep? Yeah, I gotta take my gaming where I can get it. It's sad.

Well , unfortunatly moste of my gaming time is focused on the go , mostly because I dont stay much in one place . I would only want something from Sony with wich I could use my PSP as a home console to :) So than I could play it on the bigscree and on the smallscreen to . And I think many people are the same as me and thats why the handehelds will outsell the homeconsoles . Oh , and Nintendo fially has some competition :P
