While the PSP managed a respectable showing at E3, with surprise titles like
Super Stardust Portable and
Resistance Retribution coming out of nowhere -- it certainly felt like a meager lineup compared to Sony's other system, the PS3. With the drought of PSP games still going strong, one has to wonder: is that it? PSP's main man, John Koller, assures PSP fans that there are third-party games in the works -- in fact, some will even debut this year. The next wave of PSP announcements will come before next year's E3 ... but we'll have to be patient.
Koller tells
MTV Multiplayer that "going towards the end of the year and going into 09 and beyond, we're going to see a lot of very large franchise games come from third-parties," he said. "They're going to be a bit of a surprise, they're going to be like 'Wow, that's coming to PSP?'"*

Sony doesn't care about the PSP in the USA. End of story. I say it's dead. Sony may be working on the next rev or a PSP2 for all we know. It seems insane that they'd be so unwilling to cash in on all the units sold here.
Before the drooling moron apologists make the 'piracy' argument, remember: Piracy is just as influential on software sales in Asia - probably even more so - and THEY have no shortage of love from Sony and third parties.

That's because, despite a piracy problem, enough people still _buy_ the games in the Japanese markets.
Until people in the US can react to a new PSP game with something other than "ZOMG TORRENT PLZ!!", I'm not counting on seeing much of anything for the PSP this market.

I took at look at your profile. Unsurprisingly, a large portion of your comments include something similar to this one in reference to piracy. I would suggest if anyone is an apologist, it's you who are a piracy apologist.
Piracy wasn't even mentioned in the post or any comments and you felt the need to insult phantom commentors. Your own hypocrisy is probably lost on you. You bash the notion of the impact of piracy on the PSP, claiming there is no proof. In the next (virtual) breath you make your own claim that piracy is/was just as prevalent on the DS and old systems...with no proof.
You sound like one of these people who feel that the gaming industry owes you something. You also seem to hold the opinion that anyone who doesn't believe what you believe is a lesser person. You're wrong on both accounts, along with your piracy ranting.

Gotta agree. And let me add that quite honestly, there are just no games coming out on the PSP that are at all interesting. the few games I spent money on, I never play any longer. No time for Sid Meier Pirates anymore or brooktown high (lol I know) or Lumines/2. I've considered buying a new Slim PSP because the feel is better, and my original is cracked but... I never use the PSP so why bother.

Please don't try and pass your opinion off as fact. All those games listed in the first two posts, are games I'm looking forward to.

I get the impression 50 great games could release in a month and you'd still regurgitate the same old 'Sony doesn't care about the PSP in the USA' speech. There's a bunch of games I'm looking forward to. That said, what genre isn't being represented enough that it annoys you to no end? JRPGs?

ok im with h0mi. my PSP (and DS Lite for that matter) get little to no play now. i mean ive bought games for them but regular console games are just more fun. i was all gung ho to buy a Slim PSP this summer but i just decided not to cause i really dont have anything i want to play on it right now. even though my launch PSP is starting to fall apart on me (Start button doesnt work, Wi-Fi switch doesnt always register as on, dead pixels and dust aplenty, etc.).
that last PSP i was really looking forward to was Crisis Core. i got it, and absolutely despise the battle system (why does this damn slot machine keep taking control away from me?!). Patapon was fun but i got GTAIV when i was 3/4 of the way through it and havent played it since.
there are a couple games that im looking forward to, but most are so far off, they are barely worth mentioning. Patapon 2, Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep, Final Fantasy Agito XIII, and maybe Resistance Retribution.
Sony is barely supporting the PSP now so i wouldnt put it past them to release a PSP2 within the next year or two. 5-7 years is a ridiculous amount of time though and not realistic at all. the PSP2 is more than likely going to be either completely locked down or open in the sense of the PS3.
so dont be surprised if this next 'wave' of PSP announcements includes a new PSP.

SCEA only just started to give attention to the psp. Until now they have had no interest in their own customers, no advertising, no attempt to expand the PS Store, no interest in supporting any other country and no interest in the handheld itself, instead focusing on the ps3. To be honest I have been sick of SCEA and SCEE for a long time. I am sick of how every post ends with an argument about piracy, it reminds me of the immature "DS vs PSP arguments". I was sick of waiting for the EU Store to to get something worthwhile until I just ended up using entropay to buy from the US store. I am sick of listening to SCEA's pathetic excuses and broken promises. I am sick of the long transition between US and EU. I am sick of all the good games that never get localised. 50 good games could come out and I still would not forgive SCEA and SCEE for ignoring the psp until now.

Genna-whatever: I never said 'the game industry owes me' anything. What I WAS talking about is that SONY owes PSP owners a modicum of support. That means incentives for 3rd party development, more 1st and 2nd party development, timely updates of the PS store, good online content to download and timely ports/localizing of import games and peripherals. They've done almost none of that over the past year or so.
DS piracy is in fact just as rampant as the PSP. How do I know this? The same way anyone else does - I look at websites that feature all the myriad flash cartridges for the DS and I can see all the torrent and emule downloads available. And if you don't think GBA piracy was widespread, you're living in a dreamworld. Nintendo even went so far as to litigate production of flash cart hardware and emulation.
NOR did I say DS and GBA piracy had 'no' impact on sales. What I did say was, when you sell enough units, it doesn't matter as much if there's some attrition. The reality speaks for itself - DS and GBA sales have respectively been exceedingly strong. Same with consoles hackable for pirated games, like the PS1 and PS2. Sega apologists tried this same stupid piracy argument with the Dreamcast and it was no more true there, either. The DC died because Sega killed it and abandoned devs. They'd planned to kill it since they launched the thing - but there was too much money invested to back out. I used to room with the former executive VP of SoA and worked for the (later) Exec VP of product releases, both of whom had their hands in the DC launch in the USA, so you can trust me on that one.
So basically, if you disagree with me, YOU need to bring something to the table -- certainly more than anemic ad hominems. I did call Sony apologists fools, because there's no factual evidence that shows our market as any more affected by piracy than Japan's. NONE. And yet, look at the success they're enjoying overseas with PSP hardware and software.
So until you can prove me wrong on both 'accounts' (sic), your insinuation that Sony is somehow faultless for the state of the USA PSP market is as disposable as the rest of the apologist Sony fanboys. Also, if you're 'in the industry' as your post hints at, you should be ashamed. I made games for 15 years and never did I blame piracy for one of my games selling poorly, or why a platform tanked. Look in the mirror for that - Don't blame your market for refusing to buy in to the PSP when the games and peripherals have slowed to a trickle... If they're even being released here, at all.

Nah, nah, nah... make it an original game! I mean, a PSP exclusive RE, not a watered-down port of any console version.

I would love to see Level 5 bring True Fantasy Live Online to the PSP. Every one saw how Monster Hunter put the PSP on the map in Japan and TFLO could do the same thing just with MMO games. Even better would be that the game would be free. IF L5 can't do that may be a PS3 version instead.
