Konami recently released three different retro shooter collections in Japan: Parodius, Twinbee, and Salamander. Although Konami eventually released Gradius Collection in the States, it seems highly unlikely that these hardcore shooters will leave the land of the rising sun.Because the PSP can play games from any region, importers may want to seriously consider getting these games. Siliconera has some detailed videos of the three games in action. Some of the footage is certainly bizarre, but that's part of Konami's unique charm. The videos are provided, after the cut.

The Gradius collection is one of my favorite games right now. I loved it as a kid and I'd forgotten how hard it, and the sequels, can get. I wish that Sony would release more old school side scrolling shooters in NA.

I picked up all three of these shooter collections and I have to admit, they're extremely well done all around. Parodius Portable is easily the best of the three and contains five great Parodius titles on one disc including the hugely popular Sexy Parodius and Chatting Parodius. The TwinBee Portable also contains some great classic titles, and as a bonus, the original Gameboy version of TwinBee Da! has received a complete graphical and musical makeover and it looks and plays great. Salamander Portable might be the weakest of the bunch, but it's still worth the price alone for the Japanese arcade shooter Xexex and Salamander 2. If you're a shooter fan and are looking for an old-school shoot em' up experience, look no further. Great titles and well worth the trouble to import.
