Tim Closs, chief tech officer at Ideaworks 3D has boldly proclaimed that the next generation of mobile phones will be able to produce PSP-quality graphics. "The high-end mobile devices, especially those with hardware graphics association, are comparable in performance to maybe a DS, and the next generation are going to be comparable maybe to PSP."
The upcoming generation of mobile phones will be amazing. At DigitalLife, nVidia showed off some impressive phone technology which can produce some amazing graphics, as pictured above in Futuremark's mobile version of 3DMark. With phones already being able to take photos, watch videos, and stream music, it won't be long before the PSP's amazing feature set can be completely replicated on a phone. No wonder Sony's working so hard on a PlayStation phone.

I think it would be great if they could perfect mobile phones' telephone features. Like allowing me to talk to people as if I was on the telephone.
THAT might impress me.
I might even get one then.

When mobile phones start getting actual gaming controls (and actual good games, N-Gage LOL), call me and we'll talk. Till then, they're merely curiousities meant for spending a few minutes at a time, like Bejeweled on my phone.

I have a Need for Speed Hot Pusuit game on my phone and it does blow my mind how they were able to do it. Looks better than a GBA title, with 3D models for cars and scenery, but it's pretty choppy. I don't like playing too long though, for fear of draining out the already crappy battery.

There is no way a phone will be ever as good as a PSP. I speak from my professional job being in the telecom industry. Reason being? Power. You're using the battery of a phone on standby waiting for a call, and the transmitter chews up enough as it is. Then you're looking to mini-size the phone and have it play a 2.7 inch LCD? Along with transmitting voice calls to a base station that is probably at max about 1 km or so? Ick.
Give me a PSP any day of the week for gaming.

The man is definitely talking out of his ass.
In order to have a display size, control scheme and optic drive, such a phone would have to be massive and have crappy runtime.
Until flash media is as cheap to produce as an optic disc for 1-2GB, you're looking at either scaled back content/graphics or needing BIG internal storage to download big games.
I already loathe gaming on my PPC-6700, and it's as capable a phone for gaming as you could want. What happens when you get a call? Yep, your game is interrupted.
Simple games are what the phones need to be about. Anything more and you're flying in the face of what a phone does.

yah, speaking as a PSP and mobile nut,
I still have my ngageQD, only use it when I'm going somewhere where my psp could die (E.g. dangerous to electronics, beach etc)
my normal phone is a lot more powerful than the ngage, has a better screen too, but is awful to play games on.. much better at running apps, ok for browsing, email etc.. mainly communication-focussed efforts!
If SE had a hand in it, they could have easily chucked in a GSM chip and antenna to the PSP, but obviously they thought twice about it..

"Hey, Bill. Got a new phone there?"
"Yeah. It browses the web, plays back music and video, and I can play kick-ass games!"
"That's sweet. Can I borrow it?"
"It kills the battery's dying."
"I just need to make a call."
"Nah, the service blows."
