American PC Store updates for February 14th

Not a bad week for PC Store content. The American store gets the same two demos as the Europeans have along with a full PSP game, Twisted Metal: Head-On. No doubt a timed cash-in considering the PS2 port was recently released. Here's the full release list:
  • MLB 08 The Show demo (free)
  • Patapon demo (free)
  • Twisted Metal: Head-On full game ($14.99)
  • Twisted Metal: Head-On Behind the Scenes video 3 (free)
  • Twisted Metal: Head-On Behind the Scenes video 4 (free)
  • Twisted Metal: Head-On PSP Wallpaper (free)
Have you started downloading the Patapon demo yet? Why not! Get it started.

MLB 08 demo swings by tomorrow

This year's edition of MLB The Show looks fantastic. Sporting a bevy of features on both PS3 and PSP, The Show looks to be this year's most comprehensive sports game. For example, both the PS3 and PSP version support custom soundtracks, as demonstrated in this new PlayStation.blog post.

The PS3 version in particular has grabbed our interest. Why? It looks absolutely stunning. You'll be able to tell us what you think tomorrow, as a demo launches on the PLAYSTATION Store -- for PS3 and PSP! The full game launches on March 4th.

Ryan Howard named MLB 08 The Show cover star

We hope you really like Ryan Howard, because our updated gallery of MLB 08 The Show is a virtual shrine to him. The Phillies first baseman was selected as the cover man of SCEA's upcoming baseball game. It will be his first time appearing on the cover of a video game.

"Ryan Howard's personality and work ethic exemplify what our baseball franchise is all about and we are thrilled he has chosen to represent MLB 08 THE SHOW," said Scott Steinberg, vice president, product marketing, SCEA. "Howard has worked hard to establish himself as one of the most exciting players in the game and we look forward to him continuing the tradition of MLB THE SHOW athletes having amazing years while being featured on the cover of our game."

Jeter still MLB cover model

If you base your sports game purchases on how pretty the cover athlete is, than this is a great day for you. Derek Jeter will once again don the cover of a 2K Sports' title. Predictably that title will be Major League Baseball 2K7. Mr. Jeter (or DJ as I like to pretend I call him) had this to say: "It is a real privilege to represent the premier MLB title in the video game industry." He continued, "Just as I am always striving to improve my game, 2K Sports is constantly improving theirs, and this dedication has made Major League Baseball 2K7 the best MLB video game ever." He then stopped reading the cue cards and went back to his favorite hobby of counting money.

Major League Baseball 2K7 will appear on the PSP March fifth (according to EB Games).

PSP Spot download stations head to the US

Circuit City, GameStop, Target, and Toys "R" Us will be receiving the PlayStation Spot service later this month. Japanese and European PSP owners have been enjoying this wireless download service for the past few months. According to IGN, the American versions of these kiosks will stream "game demos, movie trailers, music clips, mini-strategy guides, wallpapers and more" to your PSP.

The first set of available downloads will be quite extensive. Outrun, Worms, Dungeon Siege, MLB 2006, Ultimate Ghosts and Goblins, Lumines 2, Every Extend Extra, Race Driver 2006, and Daxter will all be available at the program's launch. By January 2007, the service is expected to expand to 6000 retail locations.

Metareview - MLB '06: The Show

Baseball means exactly two things to me: beer and hotdogs. Sure, there's a lot to be said for homers and Nomer and steroid-munching athletes with freakish media manners, but it's all about the vittles for me.

For everyone else, especially the ones who can answer questions like "who was the first baseball player to be ejected from a game for throwing a spitball?*", there's MLB '06: The Show. They should be happy too, because apparently the game is pretty darned good. A solid presentation, matched with a some new game modes and glitch fixes, make this portable baseball title a homerun, rain or shine.

IGN [8.3] - "MLB '06: The Show for the PSP is a step forward from last year's bare bones port...The Rivalry mode from the PS2 should've been included as a multiplayer option, which is a definite strike against the game, and the relative bugs that are fixed from last year are decent but inconsistent. These issues aside, MLB '06 is arguably one of the best sports titles on the PSP."

GameDaily [4 of 5] - "[MLB '06: The Show] is the best damn sports game that I have ever played on a hand held system, a title that begs to be purchased and loved into the wee hours of the morning."

GameZone Online [8.5] - "MLB '06: The Show feels like a more complete version of last year's game so if you missed that one you seriously should consider buying this one right away."
