As with many statements by David Reeves, bigwig of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, we're left with a feeling of slight confusion and bewilderment. Even with the release of the PSP-2000 (or Slim or Lite or whatever you want to call it) on the horizon, Reeves is already implying that a different PSP is still being considered -- one with a hard drive. However, he says, the option hasn't been included yet because "flash memory is simply so cheap - you can get an 8GB Memory Stick for under 100 Euros, and on 8GB you can get a lot of content."
The battle between a hard drive and flash memory is sort of like the two initial Xbox 360 SKU's, except the PSP hasn't decided which one to support wholly just yet. Reeves likened the decision to driving a stake into the ground (a vampire's chest would also have been appropriate), claiming the stake that finalized either flash memory or hard drive support had not yet been driven into said ground. Next year, perhaps, we'll hear something, Reeves implied.

So basically, that's how they intend to increase the amount of units sold: come out with a new model every year :P

Frankly, a hard drive doesn't really interest me. 8 gigs on a memory stick is more than enough for me and more convenient than a hard drive stuck inside my unit. Hell, by the time they come out with a hard drive (if ever), you could probably pick up 8 gig memory sticks cheap enough that you could feasibly pick up a couple.

How about a damn keyboard???? I dont even use the browser on my psp because its pointless. I hate their typing tool.
By the way, 100 euros is a lot of money. Thats not cheap to the consumers. Sony execs are never in touch with the public. Thats why they make these stupid mistakes on their ads in Europe.

i dont like hard drives on portable devices like the psp, too many moving parts to get ruined by everyday shocks and bumps, flash memory is just safer

What a crock of sh!t. First off, a hdd would increase the unit's price ! And how many GB do you think it would hold ? 10 ? 20 GB ?
Companies are already working on 16 GB and 32 GB memory sticks and in three eays it would cost as much as the 4 GB it does now. (Think how much was a 2 GB a year ago!)
This news is so frikin' useless ! A hdd is going to break faster than a memory stick (mostly because of the many bumps and sh!t the PORTABLE, yes, PORTABLE unit will sustain).
Did I meantion that a hdd makes ALOT of noise compared to the ms ? This would really make it difficult for me to play at night when everything is quiet and I'm using the CX300 earplugs...

Works for the iPod!
A year ago, I thought the PSP needed a hard drive, but that's before the prices on Flash memory fell so much. I do think that some kind of internal memory would be good too--as well as the memory card. There are somethings I'd like access to all the time, so I have to keep a copy on each memory card.
And maybe something dedicated for caching to help out with UMD load times...

"How about a damn keyboard????"
Amen, brother. It's the last big hardware hurdle Sony needs to leap (provided they're going to deliver on a central game/video download service soon).
I'd buy a 30GB+ PSP for $250-300. It could replace my iPod 80GB *IF* they make with the download service... Anything less than 20GB and I'm wondering what the point is, given the 8GB and 16GB memory sticks.
"A hdd is going to break faster than a memory stick"
Uh, not necessarily. I've had more flash cards go bad than I have iPod drives fail on me. And as was previously said, if a $300 iPod that can't play games for shit sells like it does, and the PSP is second only to the iPod for multi-function media devices in sales... I don't see the downside of an optional HDD model.

uhm - you can get 32+ GB on flash now and it consumes less power - the hard drive is not needed.
