Dream Games is a new weekly column where we explore a game we'd love to see on the PSP. Feel free to check in, and comment, every week.
Final Fantasy VII
Does this game need any explanation? This 32-bit debut from Square put Sony on the map through the liberal use of CG movies that stunned everyone at the time. Some people really like the story, the characters, and the gameplay as well.
Why PSP?
It makes a lot of sense to release the original right around when Crisis Core, the FFVII prequel hits our system. Considering UMD's greater storage capacity, the game would most likely fit on a single disc: none of this disc swapping nonsense to worry about!
Is it possible?
Although Square seems keen on revisiting this franchise over and over again, it seems unlikely that Square will settle for a simple port. The Final Fantasy VII tech demo that appeared on the PS3 makes Sony's next-gen console the most likely candidate for a remake, hopefully complete with new Advent Children-style CGs.

This game is terrible, and not only that, but it hasn't aged all that well, either. Why anyone would want to play this convoluted mess of a game is beyond me. I'd much rather see, you know, some original, NEW games on the PSP, rather than ports of mediocre games.

Anony, don't be an idiot. The PSP has hundreds of great games that are not ports.

Aiming low, Andrew ;) Given that some people are already playing their PSx version with the emulator on the OE firmware, we know it can be done.
But why not use that as a cornerstone of launching a new download service for either PC or direct to PSP? That would bring 'em in!

I actually finished the game on my PSP, via OE firmware and popstation, as txa said. But I STILL could not get hold of a golden chocobo! I seem to either have bad luck or I'm very very stupid.

I would LOVE to see FFVII released on the PSP. I never got to finish the original PC version because of a bug in Windows. I absolutely loved the game up to that point though.

I agree, an updated version of this game would be a huge success for the PSP, look at how much hype FFT (tactics) is drumming up, i am tempted to buy the japanese version of the game to play it through. I dont know if i would get the japanese version of FF7 but i would definitely buy it just like im planning on buying tactics.
Anony you are apparently not a fan of the series.

I know a few people who would throw their DSs out the window and buy a PSP if Squenix re-released FF7 on it, especially a graphically overhauled one.
They almost bought one when they heard about the FFT announcements and a few bought into it when Disgaea: PSP dropped, but there still just a handful on the fence. This would push them over.

I'm actually playing my way through FF7 now using the OE emulator. Some of you may not like that, but as it stands at this time it's the only way I can do it. I think its a great game to have on the PSP, with the excellent screen the backgrounds and CG movies look GREAT, plus with the ability to switch the system on and off at any point it makes the 'pick-up-and-playability' of the game ideal for the system and stands as something you could never do with this game before. Looking forward to Crisis Core and would undoubtedly get any FF7 remake with updated CG etc. In a sentence, FF7 makes homebrew a MUST HAVE.

FFVII rocks. It is the RPG that made the genre mainstream for North America. Because it was the first RPG at that time with a serious story, lots of mini games (so much to do: snowboard, chocobo racing, battle in an arena setting), interesting battle system and great graphics and first to have CG graphics.
FF1-FFVI althought they had their moments, they not for everyone. I don't like the original 6 final fantasies. My favorites are FFVII-FFXII. I like all FFs from FFVII and beyond except FFX-2 (it killed the serious and cool story of FFX). I would love remake of FFVII after they complete FFXIII, Versus XIII and KH3.

Anony, just stop playing video games, forever. Obvisiously you have no respect for the gaming industry. Calling a classic like FF7 a mediocre game?
The game left a legacy, it raised the bar for the "NEW" games that you see today.
You sir, should be banned from life.

Hei, people has different opinions. Some might not like FFVII. I don't, but recognise it is my own opinion. If you guys like them then good for you, but I rather have them remake FFVI. Playing FFVI again on the GBA was a great experience and if they remake that game on the PSP platform I would buy it.

this might be more likely to be released as a PS1 download game, rather than a UMD release.
or if you're homebrew ready, i'm sure there's probably some way you can already get this on there....

Some of you are disgusting zealots, who really disgrace gaming.
You make references to how FF was the genre defining game of its time in NA. How it brought the mark of Japanese RPGs to the States. IT WAS 19-F*N-90-something! And ZOMG! The audacity that someone could actually declare that the game didn't age well. Have you played an RPGs recently? Or is such zeal just a festering complex?
THINGS CHANGE, FFS! That's what the first poster is indirectly implying. I disagree with him entirely; the game is fine, hell, I'd take it as it is rather than have Square transform it into something polished - that's the **** I hate. I don't need the game redressed like some tramp, simply to reinstate its appeal; enchantment isn't supposed to be superficial and/or cosmetic.
I digress. fact remains that it was great, for its TIME! A time that is no more!
I'd like to direct some of your attention to the time-stamps on these posts, because you'll realise that it's friggin' 2007.
I was always a fan of ff6 - amazing game. I am not all that impressed any more. Yeah, it's cool as ever, but that charm of its time is gone. Ditto can be said for FF7. I'd rather play it as it is, but if a port does come, then I'll be getting one for the sake of collection. However, I'll be damned if I'm gonna' get clumped into this ignorant category o gaming fascists, who seem to think disliking a certain title is some heinous crime against their unborn babies.
And yeah, you want a remake - give me FFVI! I'm already satisfied with the idea of FFVII as it is, along with the possibility of Crisis Core by the end of the year (or something).

Oh my Gosh, Kade Storm! Calm down, dude. Calm down.
It's just a game. Yes, we all know it. Seeing a remake isn't a bad Idea at all. If they keep the story Original and the gameplay the same(or better) but, make it looks better with better CG and Graphics. I'll buy it for sure!!!

Yeah, Pixelator. And yes, 'ALIENS' was/is better than 'ALIEN'.
Fine, I did lose it a bit back there, sorry. But...
Black Fox, you brought up the issue of calming down, which is valid. Now, did you not consider the fact that most of my anger was directed at the FF7-nuts who were condemning someone else for apparently not liking the game - today? I mean, it's a great game for its time, but I don't desire anything more than a few CGI upgrades. Considering that quite a few RPGs have derived from this title, I think it would be unfair to the FF7 memory, pitching it in direct competition against contemporary RPGs with a completely revamped design.
Just so we're clear: I support the article, and the proposal in said article, to an extent. What I don't support, is this fanatical pro-FF7 attitude, where slamming the game can elicitate a friggin' crusade.

If you had played final fantasy from first one
(not the American first one, that was actually
6th in Japan), you'd undstand why some people
absolutely bash FF7.
I wouldn't go far to 'bash' it, but it certainly
wasn't fun at all for me.
FF3, FF6 was the best FF ever IMHO.
FF7 felt too much like, dumbed-down/childish/
RPG for first timer.
I remember when it was first launched, I linded
up to get the game in Japan, and many - I'll say
this again, many, many FF fans were angry after
playing it for a little while.
Saying stuff like ' they've ruined FF '.
I played it for a while and droped it.
I'd like to pick it up with my PSP and finish
the game one of these days tho.

...good points, Danny. Although I'll say that I still liked FF7, but FF6, as it's known, is certainly a gem, ditto for the one known as FF3. Although in my rankings, it's FF6 and FF7 at the top, but I have always been a bit of an FF7-mark.
[Plea For Pardon]And Pixelator, just so you know, the ALIENS > ALIEN comment was just me messing around. [/Plea For Pardon]
