A recent survey of more than 2,000 individuals places Sony's brand in 9th place for "winners of 2006," in between two huge American icons: the NFL and Oprah. Even with exploding batteries and real-time weapons changing, people expect Sony to have an even better 2007. Naysayers can put their styluses away for now: Sony isn't going to disappear any time soon.

People also expected the ps3 to be a resounding success, so there goes that theory. Heres to hoping Sony will for once listen to their customer base and implement the changes the consumers demand.

What people think and what happens is almost never the same. Surveys of average people is hardly a good prediction of what's to come. And this list loses all credibility by having NASCAR on it.

What can be said in all honesty. The more successful a company is now 'a days, the harder they fall when everything comes crashing down. A company that has to many devision, like sony does, can fall to peices trying to balance their focus on each devision. If all were to fail with sony though, rest asured that EA or some other monster in the gaming world would buy the playstation name. Unlike in the past, where the game system & company names were linked together in a way that both shared the same fate, playstation can do without sony, and conidering I've been a playstation fan from day one, and am now typing this from my wii remote, that might be a good thing.

"1: The PS3 has been out for... What? A little over a month with extremely limited availability? And you're saying 'so much for it being a success'."
Considering the Fact that it has been proved that there are PS3s sitting on shelves. Yeahhhh the PS3 is really limited.
"The Ninty trolls can say what they want (and by golly, they do - and often), but in 2 years, the PS3 will once again put Sony at the top of the console heap and Nintendo will again be playing catch-up with the XBOX"
Sure Pixelator thats what everyone was saying about the PSP... "its going to trump the DS", guess what happened Pix. Do you even know why the PS2 had a bigger lead over the Gamecube and the Xbox?... It was released ONE WHOLE FREAKING YEAR BEFORE ITS COMPETITORS. Do you know what advantages are there of First Mover Advantages?:
1. More Time for Devs to develop games on your console
2. More Time for You to Market your Product
3. One year headstart of sales vs your competitors
Guess whos got the FMA this gen? the Xbox 360.
Also one other thing that helped the PS2 sales was its exclusives and HYPE. Yea thats right HYPE, 'cause of the sucess of the Playstation people bought the PS2 guess who has the hype right now?... The Wii
Exlcusives:
PS3: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PS3_Exclusives = 34
Wii: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wii_Exclusices = 61
Yeah... Pix a great argument you put up there.

Most of the people interviewed probably aren't even aware of the exploding batteries or the existance of the PSP or the PS3. They probably think the Playstation is the ultimate in gaming, and sure as hell aren't buying a PS3. Their opinions, and this survey, are meaningless. The fact that PS3s are sitting on store shelves are why it's being called a failure, not someone's opinion of it.

1: The PS3 has been out for... What? A little over a month with extremely limited availability? And you're saying 'so much for it being a success'. So then I guess the DS was an utter failure because it didn't outsell the PSP the first few months of its life (even in Japan)?

1). I haven't seen this proven out. I was at Target last week when they got 3 60GB's in stock. Within 5 minutes, one had sold. 2). There's no proof of anything yet, because it's a MONTH since both launched. Try in a year. The PS2 had a worse launch than the Gamecube and look what happened there. No good games, lots of talk about it being too expensive. Didn't matter. Only Nintendo fanboys are already proclaiming this console gen 'over' for the Playstation brand. Sorry, but being vocal doesn't make you right.
"Sure Pixelator thats what everyone was saying about the PSP... "its going to trump the DS", guess what happened Pix."
First, only SONY fanboys said the PSP would 'trump' the DS completely. Most of us figured it would be quite a struggle, and it has been. The PSP has fared better than many consoles have in their lifetimes (including the Gamecube). It's etched a place for Sony in a market that Nintendo has historically dominated. It continues to do fairly well when all other handheld contenders failed badly: Lynx, GameGear, TurboExpress, Wonderswan, Neo*Geo, Game.com, Zodiac, Gizmondo, you name it. All of them combined didn't sell as many as the PSP already has. It doesn't need to outsell the DS to be a success at this point.
"Do you even know why the PS2 had a bigger lead over the Gamecube and the Xbox?... It was released ONE WHOLE FREAKING YEAR BEFORE ITS COMPETITORS."
LOL - no. Were that the only reason, the PS2 sales lead would never have expanded beyond that initial head start the way they did. You're saying the final sales figures for the last gen were ALL just because it had that lead? You're deluding yourself. In truth, the PS2 initial months sucked. Bad launch titles, DRE's, etc. It took a couple of years to build up that killer library of games that really pushed it into the sales stratosphere. Meanwhile, the XBOX was a non-entity in Japan, which will also hold the 360 to second place (at best) in the USA as well. The Gamecube struggled with the kiddie image and didn't really start to shake that until RE4.
"Yea thats right HYPE, 'cause of the sucess of the Playstation people bought the PS2 guess who has the hype right now?... The Wii"
Not really. Most people still look at the PS3 as being the 'big new thing'. And no, it wasn't hype that won the war for the PS3, it was the games. If the PS3 doesn't get the same vast library of AAA games like its predecessor, it'll have a much harder time. Sorry, but even Nintendo hype doesn't win a console war.
...Especially when the hype is basically masking the fact that the system in question is a warmed over Gamecube. When the new fades off the gimmicky controllers, you're going to be left with Gamecube 2. It's going to need those AAA's to win in the long run.
Meanwhile, none of this really has squat to do with the fact that the PSP hasn't failed and isn't dead. End of story.

Oh yeah, and how much earlier was the Dreamcast out than the PS2? That year headstart sure helped Sega a lot.
