Homebrew enthusiasts know that there's a special kind of PSP that can't downgrade... until now. Some PSPs have a
TA-082 motherboard which prevents downgrading to a homebrew-capable firmware, but whiz-kid
Dark_Alex seems to have worked his programming magic yet again and has created a downgrader for y'all running firmware 2.71. Considering the technical proficiency this guy is capable of, shouldn't he be hired by Sony by now?

Well, not quite what I want (as far as I can tell, this won't work for FW 2.81 users) but it's a step closer, at least. I have high hopes...I want to play GBA games on my PSP!
If Dark_Alex is reading this: thank you and keep up the excellent work!

Woot! Downgraded my TA-082 last night to 1.5 and installed the 3.02-SEB firmware. Already ripped my copy of PSX Gran Turismo and I've been playing that all afternoon. Its almost better on the PSP than it was on a TV. :)
Dark Alex is a god.

This has taught me valuable lesson. NEVER give up hope on going homebrew. No I just have to wait for a 3.01 compatible downgrader. I might just try this one and see if it works.

Not even 2 days after the original downgrader was released - some kind people put together 'easy installer' version of it that copies all necessary files in one single step onto the PSP. Makes for much faster process.
I tried it and it worked just fine. Downgraded my TA-082 to 1.50 and then promptly got the 3.02SE-B on it. Wow - what a difference from devhook 0.51 in emulation mode!
I was a bit hesitant to go for it because, well, if it ain't broke don't fix it. Why risk bricking a perfectly good PSP if emulated devhook worked good enough - just a bit tedious at times? But I did it any way and I guess I will not be looking back ;-) I tired the original Metal Gear Solid and it loaded just fine. If I ever finish MGS Portable Ops - perhaps I will give that game a try. Brings back some memories ;-)
#9 - ouch. Why? MGS-PO works just fine on emulated 3.01 (running from 2.71 with HEN-D and devhook 0.51 for 2.71 etc).
#11 - don't do it. Or should I say - don't waste your time. The only way to do the downgrade is by first running HEN-D. That won't work on anything other than 2.71...

Because my PSP is TA-082 and the hour before this news dropped I just went: "F(bleep) it, it's not like homebrewers are going to get around to doing TA-082." The irony is delicious.
Besides, I didn't really feel like doing the Hen-D/Devhook yoga that was the solution until this came along. Which pretty much closed the deal on upgrading to 2.8. I did 3.0-.3 for PSX compat. Fat load of good this did.
