The last time Japanese sales numbers were released, the PSP was embarassed by the DS Lite, being outsold by more than 226,000 units. This week, however, the PSP got off the ground, dusted off its knees and is ready to go another round. The PSP saw a nice spike in its sales numbers, increasing by more than 18 percent, while the DS Lite saw a 32.6 percent decline. Whoo hoo!- DS Lite: 176,853
85,600 (32.62%)- PSP: 42,604
6,666 (18.55%)- PS2: 26,451
4,163 (18.68%)- Xbox 360: 2,246
774 (52.58%)- GBA SP: 2,229
724 (24.52%)- Game Boy Micro: 1,766
356 (25.25%)- DS Phat: 1,530
4,814 (75.88%)- Gamecube: 1,039
37 (3.44%)- Xbox: 11
11 (infinite)- GBA: 9
11 (55.00%)The DS Lite still sold more than two times the amount of the rest of the consoles put together. That truly is amazing. However, I guess there is some solace to be found in the PSP's increased sales numbers and Sony having two of its platforms in the top three.

Good! I'm buying a PSP tomorrow as a matter of fact. The PSP is WAY better than the DS or DS Lite by... well... everything.

I dunno what 'solace' is found in having two Sony products in the top 3 Japanese system sales, but... *shrug*
Realistically, the DS Lite sales were bound to peak at some point. New system, nicely revised DS, Nintendo brand and all that, but the hype slacks off at some point. The PSP outsold the DS for a decent chunk of 2005 in Japan and I quite honestly think it could happen again. There have been some GOOD PSP games of late, some fun stuff like Loco Roco and Every Extend (soon) and a slew of RPGs (some pretty solid and more coming) while the DS has been comparatively quiet on that front and for more technically ambitious or big scale titles.
All the excitement around the last and final (?) E3 DS showing of upcoming titles is all well and good, but I rather think the PSP games coming down the pipe could swing Christmas sales further back toward the PSP side of things, if not top the DS outright.
Then again, Sony could continue to play hide the sausage with the media and get even further into negative press-o-rama (deserved and not)... And it could not only cast a wet blanket on PSP sales, but the PS3 as well.
We'll see.

Huh, did you just say that the DS is gonna like drop, doubtful, this is just regular elasticity in sales, it happens all the time, and Hmm I see the PSP growing in sales but not enought to beat the DS sales streak. And FF3 has already got 450,000 pre orders so there is no way PSP will own it within the next few months, when FF7 origins will be slated for release.

Don't you think it's better having two consoles being two and three instead of being nine and 10? Especially when your Sony and the PS2 the Xbox 360?

pixelater, actually the DS has alot of good titles coming its way. Probably more then the PSP actually. Zelda, FF3, Castlevania PoR, Mario 3-on-3 hoops, Star Fox Assault, Bleach 2 and Jump Superstars 2 are all major DS titles coming out for the DS this year. Its funny that you seem to believe that the PSP can outright top the DS in sales because of the few good games coming out for the PSP when the DS is coming out with more high profile games then the PSP.

@chris: I just don't think one company topping the charts is better for gaming than another. It's interesting to see how well Sony does, but from a consumer standpoint, they could use some beating-up in sales to get the message that maybe it't time to straighten out their proprietary formats and other restrictive anti-user nonsense.
@uchiha: I never said there weren't good DS titles coming - though I don't think Bleach is that high a profile game in the states, nor does Mario Hoops interest me. If you want to compare big names, there's Dungeon Siege, Ace Combat X, Medal of Honor, Every Extend Extra, Bomberman, Lumines II, Loco Roco, Lego Star Wars II, GTA Vice City Stories, Sonic Rivals, SOCOM 2 and others coming for PSP in 2006, plus FFVII: Crisis Core, Gran Turismo, Dungeons & Dragons Tactics, Silent Hill and more in 2007. Quite honestly, apart from the DS Zelda and maybe the new Castlevania, not much on the DS list interests me. But as I said, whether that translates into DS-topping sales at Christmas or 2007 in the USA or even Japan remains to be seen. I'm not making sweeping predictions here, just saying it could happen given the fairly strong PSP lineup.

pixelater, understandable. Basically the DS just doesn't interest you because everything I just said would interest your average DS fan. Just like the titles you just mentioned don't interest me in the slightest because of them being ports, most likely watered down at that. As for me mentioning japenese games I thought you were also mentioning Japan sales also so thats why I mentioned them. In my oppinion more original titles need to come out for PSP if its ever going to top the DS. If not original at least a sequal that is unique and plays differently then the console versions. If they can do that maybe people like me will play more then Lumines, Daxter and Syphon Filter on there PSP.
