Firmware 2.7 and Loco Roco in action
Many (including us) have been a bit hesitant about upping our PSP firmware to 2.7 because it would render our homebrew unusable. In addition, Sony also decided to craftily release a demo of the impossibly cute game Loco Roco as a free download, playable so long as you have this latest version. But if you can stand to watch either unfold instead of actually fiddling with the updates or the demo, then check out the video above. The 8-minute or so feature runs through a few of the upgrades included in firmware 2.7 and shows off the Loco Roco demo about halfway.
Take note that the entire thing is done on a Japanese language-enabled PSP, which means that unless you're especially familiar with the PSP's menu layout you probably won't know what's going on right away. It's not difficult at all to follow along however, but you may just want to skip to the middle to get right on the demo since watching someone navigate a menu system is really about as engaging to watch as Tom Cruise demonstrate for the umpteenth time why he'll never be normal in our eyes again.
[Thanks to everyone who sent the demo link in!]

Hmm. The game has a nice sonic-meets-katamari feel. Looks like an actual new game worth getting on psp.

I don't know... I tried yesterday and played it through completion a few times and it just didn't do it for me. It does have a very addictive, catchy soundtrack and amazing visuals, plus originality but the fun factor just wasn't there for me. It's also an incredibly short demo. However, it does seem that most people really enjoy this one. Nice to see the PSP with more "different" games like Katamari and Lumines. Skip this demo. If you have DS as well as a PSP definitely try out the DS Download Station demos. It actually made me buy a game.

I first saw this on Gamespot, and the dudes over there seemed to be having a good time. I was like, this looks promising, if the reviews are strong, I'd probably pick this up.
So it's nice to have a demo for once for the PSP, and be able to try it out and evaluate (at least part of it) for myself.
Here's hoping there will be more PSP demos on the way, at least to coincide with the firmware updates.

I had alot of fun playing through this demo. I really hope sony puts out more demos in this way, I see it as a sure cure for the weak software sales they experience with the psp. I know know in my case, I'm apprehensive about buying alot of psp games because I can't try them before hand with any regularity. But this demo really took away all my worries about whether locoroco really is as good as people say, and I can't wait until it comes out in the States.

Is it just me, or did that guy suck at video games? I wanted to reach through the computer screen and take the PSP from him.

the 2.7 firmware seems to have a faster web browser, maybe it is enabled flash content, but the joystiq family of sites loads much faster.

Quick Question, I have a US PSP... can I download this update and demo and still have english language, or do I have to wait for 2.7 US & a Loco Roco English Demo.
I had a 2.6 from the day I bought it and I have no ambition to buy GTA: LCS even though I really do want to do homebrew. Ah well.

I downloaded and really enjoyed the demo, anyone know of any other downloadable demos out there, other than homebrew?

Yeah, the guy playing the demo really was horrible. I mean, I could see how he was trying to show how the game worked, but he did it all wrong, and it wasn't even interesting. Demo was fun though, and I definitely hope for more in the future. To Doc P: I noticed to browser was quite a bit faster, switching from the three pages was faster and less confusing for the PSP, and the load bar at the top I actually noticed was working and showing load times (maybe I just missed that before).

So, basically, all the "original" games that people are crying for are all brief tours into the minds of acid heads. Understood.

No, the load bars were there. Do you mean they show when you're not holding the square button? That would be new.

hey, if you pay attention you will see that the game is made by sony and that it is on that website he was on. Sony probably approved of the game.
Anyways, is there any way you could send the update to me if you own it?

so basically, anytime the words "cute" and "video game" come together in the same sentence I run away screaming. I mean, my little sister refers to video games as "cute." I like to refer to games sure by their graphic nature, but why not some other adjective that might make guys want to play it? I really haven't seen to many girls with a psp. Maybe I'm wrong; but probably not in this case - got my mom one for christmas, and she asked if it had tetris and I ended up taking it back. Think about that. Take notice, any man who refers to any video game (or really even considers a game) as cute, really ought to question his own manliness.

It doesnt seem like 2.7 is worth updating. I would update if they put more coddecs on the psp like wmv.

I wouldn't use the word "cute." I would use the word "awesome."
