First-ever Wipeout Pulse trailer!

Wipeout Pure is one of our favorite games on PSP, and the newly announced sequel has us quivering in anticipation. Wipeout Pulse looks to bring even more trademark futuristic racing--only this time, it's going online. Check out this first trailer of the game, provided by IGN.

Wipeout Pulse gets custom soundtracks & Infrastructure

As we revealed earlier, Wipeout Pulse is heading to PSP. This sequel to Wipeout Pure will feature a number of enhancements over the previous iteration of the series:
  • Pulse will feature 24 new tracks.
  • Licensed music from Mason, Loco Dice and Stanton Warriors.
  • Multiplayer via Ad-Hoc and Infrastructure
  • Eight new teams, including "EG-X".
  • New "Mag-strip" feature allows ships to magnetically stick to tracks. This will allow certain tracks to feature loops, 90 degree plummets, and other mind-destroying tricks.
  • Custom soundtracks allow playback of MP3s stored on Memory Stick.
  • Photo Mode captures in-game screenshots.
  • Like Wipeout Pure, the game will feature downloadable content, such as new tracks and songs, immediately after release.
Check out Eurogamer for screenshots of this hotly anticipated sequel. The game will hit Europe this September.

Check your Pulse: Wipeout sequel named

The Wipeout franchise is known for its notorious sense of speed, and incredible high-stakes weapons-based racing. At a European convention over the weekend, the title of the upcoming PSP sequel was supposedly revealed: Wipeout Pulse. What kind of mind-shattering courses will Studio Liverpool create for Pulse? What kind of daredevil antics will we perform as the speed (and our blood pressure) rises?

More details will be forthcoming in an official press release. Wipeout Pure is still one of PSP's best titles, and the prospect of a sequel has us already shivering with anticipation.

Wipeout inspires trippy music vid

I'm sure many readers may have seen this before, but I hadn't and therefore I share it with you. A band called Fluke put out the song "Atom Bomb" as part of a Wipeout soundtrack and it definitely shows. The song not only sounds like a Wipeout song, it has some incredible Wipeout style visuals and will likely have you saying "cool" after you see it. But don't take my brain damaged word for it, check it out for yourself and prey for a new Wipeout title on PSP.

Wipeout PS1 comes to PSP

Yet again Sony has released a downloadable game on the PlayStation Store that is already available in a better form on PSP. The original Wipeout from the days of PS1 has landed in downloadble form on Sony's PS3 market. I'm sure for hardcore Wipeout fans this is exciting and more playable games for PSP is never a bad thing, but why can't Sony focus on games that aren't already available on PSP and give us some downloadable games worth getting excited about? I'm sitting with my hands outstretched and they have money in them. Sony can take that money as soon as they give me some games I want to download and enjoy on my PSP.

Top 5 on PSP: Racing

There are plenty of new PSPs in gamer's houses since the holidays and I figured some new PSP owners may not be up to speed on what great games the system has to offer. With that in mind, every day this week we'll feature a new genre and list the top 5 games (according to metareviews), so no matter what you're into, you'll have some idea of what games you should own. Day 2 kicks off with a very competitive genre on PSP: Racing.

Top 5 Racing games on PSP

  1. (tie) Ridge Racer/WipEout Pure
  2. Burnout Legends
  3. TOCA Race Driver 2
  4. Outrun 2006: Coast 2 Coast
  5. Twisted Metal: Head-On

I'm not a giant racing fan, so I only own Burnout Legends and Twisted Metal: Head-On (I dig the carnage factor). I did enjoy them both quite a bit though. But what I think doesn't really matter. What do you think about these 5 games? What racing games aren't on this list that you think every PSP owner should have?

Next Wipeout to feature more downloadable content

Who doesn't like free stuff? Sony's getting the big picture: we like free content downloads. As reported by develop, SCE Worldwide Studios VP Michael Denny states, "All games, whether they are launched on disc or electronically, need to create a community and have active community websites and extra content."

One of PSP's launch titles, Wipeout Pure, featured tons of downloadable content after release. In fact, the various packs released over the months following release doubled the amount of content available in the game. It was free for the consumer, and undoubtedly boosted sales. "Downloadable content helped keep the game on the shelf and encouraged people to not trade the game in," explains development director Clemens Wangerin. The game also delivered more than 800,000 downloads and became the first PSP title to reach Platinum status.

While speaking about Wipeout, it looks like Sony accidentally revealed that sequels were being made for both the PSP and PS3 platforms. If you haven't figured it out, the next iterations of Wipeout will also deliver even more downloadable content. Hopefully, it will still retain the nice price that Pure set: free.

More PS1 games announced for PSP

Gamasutra is reporting that Sony reps have confirmed the next PS1 titles that will be hitting the PlayStation Store. If racing fans didn't like the last offering, then this one should really excite them since the update will include both Wipeout and Jet Moto. Sony didn't give a firm release for the titles, but I'm betting by the end of next week or the start of the following week these games will be playable on your PSP.

For those who are unsure of how to get these PS1 games on your PSP, right now the only method is to own a PS3 and buy them off the PlayStation Store. Sony has said eventually there will be another solution in place for PSP owners, but when people like myself are insane enough to buy a PS3 just for this functionality, they may take their time unlocking the feature.

Wipeout comes to an end in Japan

Wipeout: Pure is one of my favorite games on the PSP. The great graphics, music and gameplay were fantastic, but the incredible amount of downloadable content is what made it one of the best games on the handheld. For months after the game's launch, we were presented with tons of new tracks and ships, essentially doubling the length of the game for free, making it one of the greatest values on the system (especially at Greatest Hits price). While the team has gone quiet since the last update, it appears that Sony is officially announcing the end of downloads... in Japan, at least.

It's a little sad to know that there will most likely never be downloads again for Wipeout: Pure, but hopefully that means that the team is working on what I really want now: a sequel.

Greatest Hits games available now [Update 1]

Great news for you bargain hunters. Today, PSP's Greatest Hits lineup will be available in stores. There are five games that'll carry the Greatest Hits tag and be priced at $19.99 at your favorite retailer:
  • Ape Escape: On the Loose
  • ATV Offroad Furty: Blazin' Trails
  • Hot Shots Golf: Open Tee
  • Twisted Metal: Head-On
  • Wipeout Pure
My personal recommendation is Wipeout Pure: the game features incredible presentation and offers a ton of depth, especially with downloadable content that doubles the content of the game. If you're looking for a real deal, you might want to wait a little while. Circuit City will be having a 2 for $30 sale starting 7/30 for all games $19.99 and under (which includes PSP Greatest Hits and more).

[Update 1: Sony has said that third-party games will achieve Greatest Hits status later this year. Specifically, Lumines, Untold Legends: Brotherhood of the Blade, Tony Hawk's Underground 2 Remix, Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition, and Star Wars Battlefront II are all due to go easier on gamers' wallets.
