Sony Online Entertainment thinks about MMO integration on PSP

Sony Online Entertainment has a lot of development planned for PS3. But what about its little sibling, the PSP? SOE president John Smedley told MTV Multiplayer that "PSP is something that we're definitely looking at." With so many online-ready systems in the hands of gamers worldwide, it's an opportunity they don't want to miss on. "We're really starting to see a big push for PSP. We think it's a world-class device ... In the future, we see full MMOs that are designed for the PSP."

But before diving straight into full online games on the PSP, Smedley believes online integration into existing games will come first. Imagine, a mini-game that can be played on PSP that will add to an existing game, like Free Realms. "You're sitting there leveling up your character, you log in at home when you're on wi-fi, and all of sudden your character has leveled up. We think those kinds of experiences are very possible."

Station Launcher to bring downloadable movies to PSP

Digg!

Sony Online Entertainment is responsible for the creation and maintenance of the PLAYSTATION Network and Store. At yesterday's Gamer's Day event, they revealed Station Launcher, a new service that will bring downloadable content to the masses. The plans are quite ambitious, as detailed by Gamasutra's interview with SOE creative director Nathan Pearce. According to the interview, plans for a PSP version of Station Launcher is already in the works. Through it, players will be able do download movies directly to their handhelds.

"We have a version of Launcher where it recognizes when you plug in your PSP into the PC. You can download a movie straight from the internet through the Launcher straight to your PSP without it ever having touched your PC. There is no version on the PC, if you don't want it to be. It can download straight to your destination device like your PSP."

Movies will be formatted for PSP, and will not incur an additional cost. The possibilities of Station Launcher are nearly endless: imagine if PS1 games were made available for download, sans PS3. Unfortunately, because of the huge scope of the project, it will be a very long time until we see it: "It is going to be a pretty big endeavor, so I don't have a release date for it, but it is going to be a good time after summer."

More guns, less money in Cash Guns Chaos

Sony Online Entertainment realized that their upcoming PS3 & PSP game Cash Money Chaos had a somewhat redundant title. Cash = Money, no? So, they decided to switch the name to Cash Guns Chaos. Makes sense, considering how there's a lot of cash, and a lot of guns, in the title. Yeah, not such exciting news, is it? Thankfully, Gamespot seems to have posted five new shots of this bloody game.

Sony Gamer's Day reveals new PSP-PS3 details

Sony's Gamer's Day has just wrapped up, and we're learning new details from around the web. Unfortunately, details of new firmware didn't seem to be revealed. Highlights from the event include:
  • Demonstration of Remote Play at work: the PS3 started playing the trailer to the upcoming Bond flick Casino Royale. Then, the video was interrupted and then resumed on the PSP. It sounds exactly how it should've worked.
  • John Smedley from Sony Online Entertainment demonstrated PSone download functionality (pictured). The games, as expected, can be transferred to your PSP. Mr. Smedley hinted at future PSone emulation on the PLAYSTATION 3 console.
  • Downloadable games will $14.99 or less. To compare, N64 Virtual Console games on the Wii will cost about $10, so we're hoping Sony prices the games a little bit lower to be a little bit more competitive.
That seems to be it for now. Stay tuned to Joystiq to see all the PLAYSTATION 3 news from the event.

New Cash Money Chaos details revealed

New Cash Money Chaos details
Earlier last month, we learned the first details of Cash Money Chaos, Sony Online Entertainment's new SmashTV clone game show shoot 'em up, and even saw an video interview with gameplay footage. But before we go any further, I think we need to clear something up. Players won't take the role of Elvis, as previously reported; instead, they'll have the option of controlling Sonny, Cher, Ike or Tina. Yeah, I know it's disappointing not being able to control The King, but isn't Cher the next best thing?

IGN's Jeff Haynes recently had the opportunity to preview an early version of the game, and he gives us some fresh details.
  • The game has more than 50 different episodes (or levels);
  • Each episode consists of three rounds;
  • Five episodes will complete a season, and at the end of a season, players must face a boss;
  • Players will be able to use 12 weapons, including a shotgun or laser;
  • The game will feature three difficulty levels;
  • Players can replay levels by using the Rerun mode; and
  • Controls are almost identical to SmashTV (firing directions are mapped to the face buttons).
Jeff said the game controls very well and can handle "dozens of enemies and projectiles on screen without any slowdown."

Cash Money Chaos appears to be shaping up pretty well, and if you're a fan of similar games, you should find yourself right at home.

Cash Money Chaos' insanely bloody debut

You play an Elvis-imposter in SOE's newly announced game Cash Money Chaos. And like the original Elvis, you are captured by aliens, and are forced to participate in a "twisted 70s game show." No, you're not going to be playing The Price is Right. You'll have to fight through dozens of enemies, killing everything in your sight. This "uber fast" shooter appears to play a bit like Robotron, if it suddenly turned into Robocop instead: making people's bodies explode in buckets of blood. The game will come with more than 50 levels, and include online infrastructure play for up to 8 players.

If you're interested in some really brutal cartoon violence, and want to kill ninjas, hillbillies, clowns, pirates, and aliens, then you'll have to wait a while: Cash Money Chaos is coming "early 2007." Check out the official website to score some art and screenshots.

[Thanks, steve!]
