Japanese hardware sales, Oct. 30 - Nov. 5: PSP overtakes its big brother

For the last few months, the PSP has not only been outsold by the Nintendo DS, but also the PS2. However, it seems like those days could be over as the PSP has begun outselling the PS2 for the last two weeks.

- DS Lite: 113,097 45,584 (28.73%)

It will be interesting to see how well the PSP does in the coming weeks with the launch of the Wii and PS3. The PSP has a strong lineup of games this winter, but Sony is going to have its work cut out for it to keep the PSP at the forefront of gamer's minds. Maybe Sony should start by adopting a new advertising campaign.

NPD's October hardware sales numbers released

We're all fully aware of the PSP's situation in Japan, but I think many people don't know how well the PSP sells in North America. Well, NPD has just released the October hardware numbers, and I have some good news and some bad news for you PSP Fanboys.

Bad news - in October, there were 130,000 PSPs sold compared to the DS' 360,000 units.

Good news - the deficit between the DS and PSP is a lot smaller than it is in Japan.

While it still seems like a large gap, the DS, at times, outsold the PSP by that margin in a week's time in Japan. Plus, the PSP is now selling better in America than it is in Japan by an average of 50,000 units.

However, with Peter Dille's recent comments, do these numbers really matter anymore since Sony is targeting a different audience? Or do you think Sony's just telling us and themselves that to make them feel better?

The recent news of Sony getting a new ad agency couldn't have come sooner because things are getting worse by the week for the PSP in Japan. Maybe this new agency can somehow spin this mess into something positive. However, this ridiculously huge increase in DS Lite sales most likely is due to Pokemon Diamond and Pearl, which sold about 1.5 million copies combined. And I thought that whole Pokemon craze was over years ago.

The DS Lite outsold the PSP by nearly 250,000 units. Seriously, that's not a typo. Apparently, Sony seems to think a price drop is not what it needs at this point, but thinks we need more than 100 games shoved down our throats by the end of the year. However, at this point, I believe Sony should focus on quality over quantity. If they can give us a dozen worthwhile games by year's end, I'll be a happy camper.

There's not a whole lot I can say to make us feel better this week. Last week, we were able to take solace in the fact the PSP made a nice jump in sales, but it actually dropped this week.

- DS Lite: 134,885

The PSP got obliterated by the DS Lite, which sold more than 100,000 units. If that's not an ass whoopin', I don't know what is.

However, I believe Nintendo isn't the happy, happy company many people think they are. I believe something evil and sinister is lurking in the upper echelons of Nintendo, much like in Halloween III. Could it be the DS Lite actually uses subliminal messages to make people fall in love and buy it like crack in the ghetto? Yes, I know it may sound far fetched, but it's the only logical explanation.

Well, look how the mighty have fallen. The Nintendo DS Lite, which is the PSP's biggest competitor, saw a 50-percent decline in hardware sales last week. Never mind sales numbers ... who cares about those anyway? It's all about percentages, baby.

The PSP surged on with a six-percent jump in sales that can most likely be attributed to Tales of Phantasia Full Voice Edition's total domination in the software sales chart.

The PSP needs to keep looking in its rear-view mirror, however, because the DS Phat also saw a big spike in its percentages with a whopping 230-percent increase. But, I expect this to be short lived due to its "teh suck."

Also, look at how crappy the Wii is selling. Hah hah, it's being outsold by the original Xbox and hasn't even sold a single unit! Those percentages look pretty bad.
