Dustballs' latest ad fails to have a point

Sony's dustballs gained some notoriety when they helped launch the PSP system in America. Since then, the critters have gone across the shore to Europe, where the poor advertising campaign has continued to antagonize unsuspecting Europeans. The latest ad featuring the hairy duo fails on multiple levels. Firstly, the characters don't even bother mentioning the product that's being advertised. Secondly, it's not even that funny. Shouldn't a great game such as Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters deserve better than this? For example ... America's shrink-ray inspired commercial?

[Update: You guys are clearly smarter than me! =D Great job figuring out that "size matters." Thanks, everyone.]

Video Sandwich: Ad Critic edition

Which ad do you like better? The ad on top heralds the return of the dustballs. Now they're hitting a new audience: Europe. Does this newly resurrected ad campaign appeal to you? Or does the following fan-created effort, found via Digg and PSP3D, catch your fancy? It's sad how much better the fan-made video is, no?

Dustball ad continues invasion in Europe

I wasn't a big fan of the dustball ads that hit America during the PSP launch. They showed how the PSP is like carpet you can play with outside... which didn't provide a very compelling reason to buy a PSP. This ad campaign was so bad that it was brilliantly parodied by a fan. Unfortunately, SCEE has picked up the dustballs for a new website. I'm sad to admit that the website humors me much more than the original, and it does a pretty good job of conveying some of the better features of our handheld. Check it out and then tell us what you think about it.

Video Sandwich: October 27, 2006

Two very different and random videos tonight: the first video shows Australia's Today Show going absolutely ga-ga about the PSP. They take a look at the Passport guides, and the Talkman translator guide. Their impressions about the software are overwhelming glowing, as if Sony ::cough:: paid for this spot. Strangely, they keep on telling the viewers to just take the systems away from the kids, and use it for themselves. The kids are too busy playing with their DS games to notice you taking the PSP away from them, anyways. Hilarious moment: when they talk about the $1000+ PLAYSTATION 3, because in Australian dollars, it is. Still evokes a very Twilight Zone kind of feeling.

The second video shows a very impressive parody of the original dustball ads that Sony ran to promote the PSP. It highlights one of the PSP's less attractive attributes: the dumb loading times. One has to wonder if this stigma will stick with the PSP for much longer: games like Daxter show impressive lack-of-load times that prove great developers can do amazing things with the system.
