Deal: Disgaea or Dragoneer's Aria for $18 each

The critically-acclaimed strategy RPG Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness is going for $14.90 + $3.40 = $18.30 over at Play-Asia.com. Most places still have the game for $29.99. Be aware that while this is not the US version of the title, this Asia version has English text and menus and otherwise identical to the US release. Take advantage of this deal here.

Another RPG from NIS, Dragoneer's Aria, is also $18.30. The game was released last year in the US and received average to negative reviews, so we might want to skip this one unless you really love RPGs. The Asia version (which is again, identical to the US version) is finally coming out October 2nd of this year, and you can preorder it here.

Prinny: Is it okay to star in some video footage?

For those of you without Japanese PLAYSTATION Network accounts, it'll be pretty much impossible to play the current Prinny demo. Thankfully, our friends at PSP GadgetZ have recorded footage of the demo in action. Enjoy the energetic, upbeat music and classic 2D platforming action ... after the break.

PSP Fanboy hands-on: Prinny: Is It Okay If I am the Main Character?

Disgaea fans probably jumped in excitement upon hearing the news that Prinnies would be getting their own game for PSP. Prinny: Is It Okay If I Am The Main Character? is the aptly cute pseudo-2D side-scroller which is also being released in North America. While fans may be squealing in delight over that, here's one more tidbit that's going to make your day: you can play the game now off a demo on the Japanese PS Store. If you can't download it or just plain old stuck at work and can't get to it until you're at home, then we're providing our very own impressions for your convenience.

Getting right into it, the demo was a short, one-level adventure taking us through scenery we've seen in screenshots previously (namely the one posted above). As you can see, the environmental objects are 3D models and there will be times when certain actions will cause the camera to shift into this 3D perspective; however, the game is mostly in the 2D perspective, side-scrolling from left to right. Before you start the level you'll be given two optional difficulties: either a "one-hit you're dead" game or a "three-hit chance." The number of hits you can take will be displayed by icons placed in the upper left corner of the screen. If you die, you'll use up a life point which are all displayed in the bottom left.

Prinny Disgaea title coming to the States

The fine folks over at Siliconera got a chance to speak to the marketing manager of NIS America, Jack Niida, about Disgaea DS. Those sneaky snakes managed to surprise Niida with a question about the possibility of a localized version of the PSP-exclusive platformer Prinny: Is It Okay If I Am The Main Character? -- and yes, the game is confirmed to come to the US. The publisher will be NIS America and the release dates are still up in the air at this time. We can't wait!

[Thanks, Jennifer!]

Most of the screenshots explain the mechanics of the game: dashing, jumping, throwing, and more. Then there are fancier moves like a hip attack, cutting and finally, the Prinny blast.

This platformer will be headed to Japan at end of November, but a demo will be landing the Japanese PS Store on September 29th. No release info yet for anywhere else in the world. Check the rest of the screenshots of our favorite tormented souls in action here.

Deal of the Night: Disgaea for $30

If you haven't gotten tired of Nippon Ichi Software's staple Disgaea series by now, chances are you haven't played it yet. This must be remedied. amazon.com is having a sale, discounting the game to $30. Of course, getting it used from the Amazon marketplace can save you a couple of bucks, but you won't get the free shipping. However, it appears that this reprint will take about a year to release.

PSP Fanboy review: Disgaea Afternoon of Darkness

Jeanne d'Arc has seemingly opened the gates of a massive flood of excellent SRPGs for the handheld. Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness continues the PSP's onslaught of fantastic SRPG games, and this may be the best yet. This stellar translation of the PS2 original features a silky smooth framerate, brisk load times, a fantastic story mode, and a slew of extras that will have fans, new and old, rushing to get this game.

Some may be unfamiliar with Disgaea's rabid fan base. However, it's easy to see why the game has such a strong following. This Nippon Ichi classic blends a fun, fast-paced story with a wacky cast of zany characters. The writing is incredibly sharp, wholly embracing and parodying genre conventions. For example, one of the earliest characters is simply called "Mid-Boss" by the catty Laharl. The stylish presentation and heavy use of voice acting certainly adds an appreciable amount of character to the experience.

However, that's not the only thing that makes Disgaea so appealing: the gameplay will easily have you coming back for more. The game follows the typical model of all SRPGs, but adds many touches that make it unique. Due to the huge number of factors that must be considered in-game, playing Disgaea can feel like taking a class in university. While the game attempts to be approachable, it's clear that this is a game squarely for the hardcore -- the SRPG veteran.

Worldwide PSP releases for the week of October 28

This week's big releases are the uber violent and highly criticized Manhunt 2 and finally Nippon Ichi's Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness. Unfortunately for our European and Asian brothers, there's not much in the way of new software this week.

Asia Games
  • No new releases
While there isn't a lot to go around in any region, don't be sad because Silent Hill Origins and Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops + will hit in a few weeks.

Disgaea's Etna Mode revealed

One of the biggest new features for the upcoming PSP version of Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness is "Etna Mode," a retelling of the original story from a totally different perspective. Etna, as fans of the original will remember, is one of the cuter and funnier characters in the game, and it'll be fascinating to see her retelling of the story. Now, even those that have played the original Disgaea will have no choice but to pick up this PSP re-release.

The fog of war strikes new Disgaea video

A brand new trailer for Disgaea's upcoming PSP-exclusive multiplayer mode explains the horrifying truth behind the cause of the fog of war. As the video shows, it's not caused by netherglobal warming, but rather the multiplayer options menu! Humor and gameplay clash in this revealing new video: watch for yourself!

Disgaea multiplayer to have neutral enemies, fog of war

In addition to the Geo Cubes and Demon Gadgets, Disgaea's upcoming PSP-exclusive multiplayer mode will feature some genre staples. First is the fog of war. As in other strategy games, players will have to move their units through the map to increase the areas visible to them. Going headstrong into a fortified enemy position will undoubtedly end in some doom.

To add even more tension to the darkness hidden in the fog of war, neutral enemies can also be activated. Neutral enemies will attack both you and your opponent and are quite powerful (like Turok's dinosaurs, perhaps?). Willi you and your opponent both fight against the neutral enemies? Or will you hope that your enemies get decimated while you run away?

Using Geo Cubes in Disgaea

Geo Cubes are crucial to the new multiplayer mode found in Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness. As you can see in this image, there are a lot to choose from. Geo Cubes are like magic/trap cards in card based games. Not only can they alter stats, they can summon units, destroy units, etc. Even when facing opponents that overpower you, Geo Cubes can turn the tides.

In order to use Geo Cubes, you need to have Geo Souls. You can gain 1 Geo Soul at the beginning of your turn. Some Geo Cubes cost more than 1 Geo Soul to use, so you may have to wait a couple of turns to use a powerful Geo Cube.

Some of the Geo Cube types include:
  • Morning Class – Make 1 enemy in the Base Panel fall asleep
  • Overlord's Wrath – Randomly destroy 3 units
  • Reckless Chaos – Decrease all units' HP by ½
  • Fall Back – Send selected unit back to the Base Panel
  • Dimensional Rift – Randomize all unit positions
  • Neutral Pact – Cannot be targeted by neutral forces for 1 round
  • First Strike – Destroy enemy Base Panel
Expect more on Disgaea soon.
