Homebrew FTW: firmware 3.01 decrypted

Just to help you keep track of it all:

Nov 20 - Firmware 3.00 available.
Nov 21 - Suspicious "security issue" found.
Nov 22 - Firmware 3.01 available.
Nov 22 - Firmware 3.00 and 3.01 decrypted.

Noobz, a popular PSP coder, proudly announced that the newly released 3.01 firmware has been decrypted. What does that mean? It means the homebrew community is working harder, and faster, than ever, to keep up with Sony. With the firmware decrypted, hopefully it won't be too long until something tangible appears for homebrew users.

So when do you think firmware 3.02 will come out? Tomorrow?

Will you make the upgrade to 3.0?

Will you make the upgrade?
Yes. I love to have the latest firmware.
No, not until games require them.
No, homebrew FTW!
Firmware 3.0 is out, and not everyone is rejoicing. Some are bitter that they need an impossible-to-get PS3 to download PSone games (for now, at least). Others just don't want to bother with an upgrade. Thinking about all the new features of Sony's latest official firmware, will you make the upgrade? Or, will you keep your current firmware, for whatever reason (homebrew or not)?

Music visualizations in 3.00 kick butt [m]

I captured this quick video of the PSP running music on 3.0 firmware just to show off how impressive and varied they are. This is a feature that I certainly didn't see coming, and it's great to see Sony adding such a valuable tool. You can watch the video above, or download it to your PSP's 100ANV folder here:

Firmware 3.00 now available via Network Update

It's finally here. The Megaton firmware. THREE POINT ZERO ZERO. All you have to do is access Network Update and download the file. (As of this writing, the upgrade is not available on the US or Japanese PSP websites.)

This update includes the following changes:
  • PLAYSTATION Network titles are now supported under [Game].
  • [Remote Play] has been added as a feature under [Network].
  • [Online Instruction Manuals] has been added as a feature under [Network].
  • Timed recording has been added as a feature under [RSS Channel].
  • A visual player has been added as a feature under [Music].
  • 3-speed fast forward and fast reverse has been added as a feature under [Music].
  • [Camera] has been added as a feature under [Photo].
  • [UMD Auto-Start] has been added as a feature in [System Settings] under [Settings].
For those of you that don't have wi-fi access, I have provided a downloadable update for you. Connect your PSP via USB, and then go to the PSP/GAME folder. Create the folder "UPDATE" and place the EBOOT file there. From your PSP, access your Memory Stick's games, and choose the update.

3.0 manual online; confirms PS3 necessary for downloadable games!

Our reader Matt T. sent in a very hot tip. It appears that the online manual for PSP version 3.0 is up and running. Thankfully, it doesn't have any features removed. However, it confirms our fears that a PS3 is necessary to download games to the PSP. Here's the proof:

"Play PLAYSTATION®Network titles downloaded from (PLAYSTATION®Store). A PLAYSTATION®3 system is required to use this feature."

What??? Didn't Peter Dille confirm that you didn't need a PS3 to download games to the system? Sony's got a lot of explaining to do...

3.00 firmware to miss PS3 launch

After weeks of speculation, we can finally report that the hotly anticipated 3.00 update will not be coming out during the PLAYSTATION 3 launch. Some have assumed that the firmware upgrade will occur in tandem with the Japanese launch of the system, happening less than two days from now. However, 1UP and IGN are both reporting that the firmware upgrade won't be coming until "the end of November." The upgrade will enable the impressive Remote Play functionality, and will make it possible for PSP users to play downloaded content from the PS3. There was no mention of a new Flash client.

The PLAYSTATION 3 will launch with a firmware upgrade, but for the next-gen console. First-time users will be required to upgrade their system firmware to 1.10 in order to access the PlayStation Hub. It seems like PS3 owners will get into the habit of upgrading their system software from day one.
